During the early central Pacific campaigns of World War Two she served as flagship of the oiler fleet, replenishing fast carrier striking forces from Hollandia to the Marianas. Although the CALIENTE saw a good deal of action in the Saipan invasion of 1944 and in the battles of the Philippines - oilers nearby were divebombed, and a sister ship was sunk by a midget subma- rine-the CALIENTE was lucky enough to come through the war without suffering any major damage from the enemy. The enemy included not only Japanese but also several typhoons, one of which struck while the fleet was replenishing in the South China Sea. The ship's home port during most of the later Pacific war was lonely Ulithe atoll in the Carolinas. In February of 1945 the ship took a break- seventeen days in Long Beach- then back to Ulithe to replenish the fleet that was bombarding the Japanese mainland. Finally the surrender came and the CALIENTE dropped anchor in Tokyo Bay. There the entire crew had achance to make liberties in Tokyo and Yokohama and witness the war damage before returning to the States. '- The CALIENTE's first postwar assignment after a trip to Shanghai was to Bahrein in the Persian Gulf, by way of Singapore and the Malay Straits, for a load of fuel oil. Then in March of 1947 the CALIENTE was assigned to shuttle runs between Bahrein and Norfolk, Virginia by way of Tangiers, Spanish Morocco. In October of that year she sailed to Gibraltar, then on to Ras Tanura, Arabia, from there to Singapore and on to Guam, arriving again in San Pedro in December 1947, having sailed around the world during the year. With the advent of the Korean War the CALIENTE was again hard at work replenishing the fleet. She made three tours during the Korean conflict, concluding the last with the impressive achievement of having transferred over three quarters of a million barrels of fuel to over 250 United Nations ships, and having carried in transit nearly a thousand passengers and 5,000 bags of mail in addition to 60 tons of fleet freight. Since 1953 the CALIENTE has been engaged in semi-annual tours to the Far East in suport of the Seventh Fleet. The primary purpose of these Far Eastern tours has been to quench the Pacific Fleet's thirst for fuel oil, aviation gasoline and jet fuel. Replenishment is accomplished both at sea and in port. A typical cruise includes traveling 25,000 miles and pumping 10 mil- lion gallons of petroleum products. Ports frequently visited include Yokosuka and Sasebo, J apang Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Subic Bay, Philippine Islands and Hong Kong, British Crown Colony with brief stop-overs in Pearl Harbor. V . Mm..
