Nearly smashing down the doors the student body rushed to their classes on August 23. Everyone is proud of the fact that the population of C. A. is at its height in history. We also have a few new faculty members. Everyone's heads are spinning with the change of seasons but the joy of upcoming Football games adds a little excitement to the at- mosphere. Due to certain circumstances there will be no powder puff Football this year. We are all excited about the addition to the high school building. (A bit of thanks to those who made it possible.) Most of all, we should appreciate the fact that C.A. is our school, and due to the efforts of many concerned parents we are able to attend such a fine school. 7 Season W. The 1977 CAVALIERS introduced the winning side of FOOTBALL to Calhoun Academy. This was the best and most exciting FB season CA has ever seen. Out of the ten games played, only one was lost to the tough team of Mims. For the first time in CA's FB history, Dorchester was creamed. More seniors than ever before participated in this program. During the fifth game David Wannamaker broke his leg and was out for the remaining season. Tri-captains David Grubbs, John Wienges, and Jeff Inabinet served the team well. Bub Brandenburg broke his ankle and was out for several games. THANKS, surely goes to each and everyone of those young MEN who strived for success. Thanks guys! ! ! 9 Coaches And Cheerleaders Play Important Poles Jn Athletics An Athlete Is . . . The athlete is made of special materials. He hears, feels, and expresses himself through his body actions. While his body aches from fatique; but soon has strength to overcome his opponent. He experiences the theory of mind over matter! With each step, his will increases; he understands a language of his body. A force within him makes him pump out the pressure to arrive at perfection. All at once he reaches a peak; His muscles are listening to his mind. He can't stop now, or the sensation is blown. Now he is aware of nothing except the fact that he has a brain which plays a rhythm, that, by, instinct his body moved too. To hear that beat and to feel his strength increasing his heart pounds with the love of knowing he has what it takes to be an athlete . . . ? Last summer ads were sold to help pay for the annuals; since we hardly raised enough money, the staff sold CAVALIER jackets this past winter. David Allen Grubbs Looking Back 1 like to remember when both my troubles and cares were few. Those were the days when everyone could not wait to be old enough to drive or date the real ' 'biggy'1. Little did we know that by the time we could drive there would be a gas shortage and that dating was not what our mothers read to us in fairey tales. Because we thought we had problems then, it seemed so strange when our parents would say 1 'These are the best years of your life, enjoy them while you can. As the years crept upon us, we would often wonder why ' 'she'' or he got everything; regarding the fact that he honestly deserved it. Upon entering high school we were given a title Freshmen. We were finally able to participate in Varsity sports, but those of us who were not athletically inclined seemed to be left out. At last we were Juniors and prepareing for ' 'out' ' first Jr. -Sr. prom. It was a lot of fun decorating the gym for that fabulous evening. The sudden realization that we had only one more year of high school and that we were actually growing older put a big hold on things. Now we are Seniors, the class of 1978. We wish we had it to do over again. We are raising money for our class trip to the Bahamas. As we prepare to leave Calhoun Academy, we are leaving some of our best memories behind. We acknowledge the fact that there will always be good times to look forward to, and we will be making new memories with each adventure we pursue. Calhoun Academy wa- merely a stepping stone in our lives; she opened our eyes to the meaning of an education. Next year some of us will be in college, some married, and some working; but we will always be Calhoun Academy's class of '78 and will remain young, foolish, and happy. 51 Cheryl Elizabeth Heckle Jeffrey Walker Inabinet Melody Anne Inabinet Robert Wayne Inabinet Charlene Ann Jones 52 $4 “footloose 9amfree” We Do Jt Our Way Seniors Class Officers: President, Melody Inabinet; Vice-President, Jane Carson; secretary-treasurer, Sara Stabler (absent) ’Cause they Don ’ 57 Congratulations Zo Zhe Varsity (girls And Coach Kicky Cine On Winning Zhe S.CJ.S.J. ’s Kegion JV-A State Championship . . . Most of them could barely dribble the ball when practice started this season, but these girls had unmatched determination to win. TTiis team lost three starters last year, but together with Coach Ricky Line, they were able to win twenty- eight games this season - a school record. Starting out slowly, the Lady Cavaliers learned six different presses to baffle their opponents. Working together they captured the championship trophey for four tournaments - the Chrispnas Tournament, Region 4A Tournament, Lower State Tournament, and the Class A State Championship. They practiced in preparation for their matches and for the honor of being state champions again. Having been state champions for five straight years prior to last year, the girls hoped to bring the coveted title back to Calhoun Academy. The only obstacle in their way was the fact that they needed one more player for the state tournament. When the day of the tournament arrived, the girls, sporting a 4- 1 record were on their way to Kingstree. Fortunately the team now consisted of four players -- Krulien Fairey, Elizabeth Fairey, Isabella Fairey, and the newly recruited Mary Stewart Knight. The championship belonged to these girls from start to finish. They posted the lowest eighteen-hole score ever recorded for this tournament, including an 83 by state medalist Krulien Fairey. This put the finishing touch on a fine season. 83 Zmnis Zeam Zries Mard 84 The tennis team of Calhoun Academy, although they did not reach the state tournament, did a fine job in representing our school this year. Playing eight matches, these girls finished the season five and three, losing only to triple A schools. Coached by Mrs. Doraine Wannamaker, who was assisted by Mrs. Tally Wannamaker, this year's team showed great dedication to the sport along with good sportsmanship. Softball Slugs Zo A Winning Season Under the direction of Coach Mrs. Greg Brodie and her assistant Mrs. Betty Prickett, Calhoun Academy was able to have a girls' softball team for the first time in quite a few years. Interest ran high and girls from grades nine through twelve were eligible to play. Many of these girls were new to the sport, although others had had experience on church teams. Also, Mrs. Greg Brodie made her first debut as a coach. The season looked bleak after the first few games, having dropped the first three to Bowman, Holly Hill, and Dorchester. Then things looked better as the girls defeated Bowman 9-5. The final game of the season also lifted spirits and raised hopes for next year's team. The girls defeated the strongest team in the conference - - Mims ! 87 baseball Zeam Mas Zough Season The baseball team, coached by Rufus Inabinet, Jr., had another tough season on the road. The plans for a baseball field were under way, but the field would not be completed in time for the 1977 season. The team started out strong with victories over Willington and Bowman in pre-season scrimmages. However, the loss of Bam Gressette and John Wienges due to broken bones sent the remainder of the season into a tailspin. But the season was not all bad. This song, the theme for Calhoun Academy's Junior-Senior Prom of 1977, was chosen in an effort to combine the past and the present into a night to be remembered throughout the future. Decorated with a colorful rainbow over which the answers to all our dreams lie, a wishing well into which one may cast pennies for wishes come true, and a stairway leading to a land where one's greatest whims are granted, the gym acquired the atmosphere of a wonderland of romance. With music being provided by the ' 'Ninth Row,'' this prom added a little colour to the world of every guest who attended. 90 M iss Calhoun Academy 1.
