This is only me, hitch-hiking along Life's Highway-and not having much luck either. I am now on my way out of California, where for the past few months I have met every solitary member of the Class of 35 . fSome weren't so solitary.j Okay, here goes. First there was Bob Cantu, who pulled up to the side of the road with a characteristic Want a lift baby? I accepted fthough in much more dignified termsl. He turned out to be a salesman for False-Silk Hose and doing well, too. He let me off on a corner in Brawley and who should I see but Ieanne Lorenz! She was on her way to a dancing lesson and told me her teacher was Mabel Darling and that she Qleannel and Mary Yada were putting on a sister-act at a theatre soon. We reached her destination and after affectionate farewells, I went humming for is it thumbing?J on. After awhile I was picked up by Rosie and Iohnny Ber- tussi who were returning from a W. C. T. U. convention where Iohnny had spoken on The Demon Rum . We had so much to say to each other that I guess Rosie didn't pay much attention to her driving and we ran into an apple cart. It turned out to be Fred Sobke's cart and was he mad! Pretty soon a cop came up to see what was going on. I knew the minute I saw those feet, who the cop was-yes, Bill Yates. Well, we all trekked down to the courthouse where I discovered that Reynaldo was the judge. We had to wait for another case and as I sat there I realized with a shock that I knew the defendant and the plaintiff-and, can you believe it-it was Leonard Hamer lknown as Horrible Hamer in the boxing ringi and he was suing Russell Elligett lplastic surgeonl for messing up an ear. I then saw that Alfonso Cagrrillo was District Attorney and that Luis Alva- rez, George Cottrell and David Knechel were sitting in the jury. I never did discover how the caseicame out because I recognized lean Canaris and found that she was the Chief of Police for chiefess or whatl? After talking to her I got us out of our little jam by paying 5.78 for the apples. After leaving the Bertussis I ran right into Homer Harer! He asked me to ac- company him to the Hot Spot which was owned by Iohn Iiles and Frank Claverie, where he wanted to get some atmosphere for his novel. When we arrived we discovered that Kokobum and his Kings was the orchestra, with Gaston Lopez crooner, and Emma Sue fArvizu to usl fan dancer. That place was certainly crowded. I saw Bud Cardiff and Bill Olson, who were Business men land evidently successful, with their wives, Virginia and Edith. Oh, I forgot to mention the famous guest- artist, Alex Barron! And I almost forgot the chorus and when Barbara Zuckerman. Esta Ericson, and Mary Brown were in it! Front row, too, I saw Phil Tucker come in so we asked him to have some lemonade with us. I gathered that he was quite successful in the detective business and was. even then, on the trail of one Leo Delgado who was selling copies of fa- mous paintings illegally. That was really a shockfl had to leave for home a little early that evening because I didn't want to get locked out of the ark- P While walking down a street leading into dear old Calexico, I saw a most pitiful sight-a poor little blind woman. Imagine my surprise when she tore off her dark glasses and yelped, Babbsey, Wabbsey, don't you know me? Yessir, it was Margaret Keller and selling shoe-laces! Oh. Fate! I was glad to see her-especially after she gave me a dollar-for PAGE TWENTY ONE ILA 1AkllllllQ4llDllQ2AIt old time's sake! Really, I saw more touching scenes that day. No. 2 was Dick Lopez trundling triplets down the street. After talking to him I found that they were his neighbor IMrs, Louise Herter Robinsons! chil- dren but that he did so adore babies! The third heart twister occurred when I saw Marina, Anna and Martha get thrown out of a boarding house by their landlady, Mary Kawakita. I gathered from her oration that they hadn't paid their rent for six months and that landladies must live. I wanted to help but felt that I was in as desparate financial straits as they were so last saw them tearfully wending their way toward the poorhouse. As: I went around the corner with whom should I collide but Manuel Erquiaga! After we recovered our poise, he asked me to have dinner with him and his bride lMary Alice Castrol. When we reached their vine- covered cottage I saw we were really going to eat because in walked the grocery boy from Cabrals Fine Foods Emporium with eleven cans! While we were waiting for Mary to open the cans, we turned on the ra- dio. Iust in time for the Sassy Sausage program starring Don Fong fthe man who knows more about yourself than you doj and Alma Hanson. Coloratuna sorprano, with Gilbert Gomez, master of ceremonies. I was so excited over hearing these old friends, I got indigestion after dinner tlt couldn't have been the dinnerj. That indigestion really cramped my style tboth literally and figurativelyl and I was unable to go to the theatre and see Fausto Gallego, the Great Lover, in 'lThe Ways of the World . Well, I guess that covers the class of 35 -it needs it. Yes, they were all interesting--with the possible exception of yours truly who is just a poor hitch-hiking orphunt with no blood relations 'cept the mosquitosf PAGE TWENTY TWO M ZAMUIWJIQINQA LA AIKUIMDIIQQAX Y E S T E aka r' R D A Y S Wf 3 hh -an 4, , V , an If-v : ,mr s ',- -'-X PAG IILA PWUIVQIIDIQA u 5 w f - - W4 V1-:f'4v'4I!'!W xl I V V, Wg., 1 LLVou1l J LA ZAWUIIQIIDIIQA , .W A ,, , -T ...EY--.
