The Class of 1970 extends its Aimulelcze in ap- preciation of Mr. Edward Matthews-teacher, coach, friend. Mr. Matthews received his primary education from Union Springs Central School from which he was graduated a letterman in football, basketball, and baseball in l948. At the conclusion of a four-year stint in the United States Navy. Mr. Matthews attended Alfred University where he majored in history. Shortly after his graduation in 1959, Mr. Matthews obtained a position with Caledonia-Mumford Central School as a teacher of social studies at the junior high level. In addition to this, eight of his ten years at CMCS were spent as the varsity football coach. Many students might say that they identify with Mr. Matthews, for, although he is involved in a pro- fession worthy of respect, he does not place himself on In Dee a pedestal above his classes. During the painful formative years of twelve and thirteen, Mr. Matthew's good-natured ribbing teaches young people to laugh at themselves. an invaluable lesson to learn before mounting the steps to high school. Like any other human being, Mr. Matthews has his bad days , but, invariably, throughout the course of them, he will still find something over which to chuckle. The most satisfying characteristic possessed by Mr. Matthews is his loyalty, for once one has culti- vated him as a friend, he will do everything in his power to assure one's success. Mr. Matthews' concern runs the gamut from a glowing college recommendation to a thoughtful visit at the time of a family bereave- ment. lt can be simply stated that he is a gentleman.
