Following his gradua- tion from Canastota High School, Mr. Cox attended the University of Notre Dame where he received his bachelor of arts in economics. After completion of a tour of duty in the United States Army that encom- passed the Philippine lslands and Thailand, Mr. Cox did graduate work at Syracuse University, Geneseo State Teachers College, and Oswego State Teachers College. Five years ago Mr. Cox came to Caledonia- Mumford and joined the faculty as a teacher of social studies. Mr. Cox's charismatic personality and quick wit have won over many an unruly student. Noted fori sparking his classroom lectures with snatches of dry humor, Mr. Cox has achieved a comfortable level of rapport with all those he has touched. His room has long been a haven for the emotionally troubled rather than for those with scholastic woes. Mr. Cox's straight- forward approach to various topics of conversation causes each individual to soon lose his inhibitions and to express his own ideas. ln short, Mr. Cox is a man who captivates young people at the same time as he educates them. ,N.........,..- During football season, Mr. Cox's room provides a re- laxing atmosphere in which thc players can unwind. . . . and whose greatest vice is the feeling of security which he attaches to his thermos of Coffee. ,fe -, - :-if tt. ...l., i . .,t.,.. .it Y ' S 1 eie- X - 2 awww He is at man whose very presence exercises control over the Classroom. . . Mr. Cox is unafraid to deal with students on their own ground. The Class of 1970 extends its Aimulelcze in ap- preciation of Mr. Edward Matthews-teacher, coach, friend. Mr. Matthews received his primary education from Union Springs Central School from which he was graduated a letterman in football, basketball, and baseball in l948. At the conclusion of a four-year stint in the United States Navy. Mr. Matthews attended Alfred University where he majored in history. Shortly after his graduation in 1959, Mr. Matthews obtained a position with Caledonia-Mumford Central School as a teacher of social studies at the junior high level. In addition to this, eight of his ten years at CMCS were spent as the varsity football coach. Many students might say that they identify with Mr. Matthews, for, although he is involved in a pro- fession worthy of respect, he does not place himself on In Dee a pedestal above his classes. During the painful formative years of twelve and thirteen, Mr. Matthew's good-natured ribbing teaches young people to laugh at themselves. an invaluable lesson to learn before mounting the steps to high school. Like any other human being, Mr. Matthews has his bad days , but, invariably, throughout the course of them, he will still find something over which to chuckle. The most satisfying characteristic possessed by Mr. Matthews is his loyalty, for once one has culti- vated him as a friend, he will do everything in his power to assure one's success. Mr. Matthews' concern runs the gamut from a glowing college recommendation to a thoughtful visit at the time of a family bereave- ment. lt can be simply stated that he is a gentleman. Mr. Edward Matthews flppreciation eeeb e .7 and the firm disciplining ofa rowdy Student. His day begins with the clarification of an ambiguous statement. . . Did I ever tell you about the time. . .? Alone. at last! Nba Q35 ':fi5IESf'S- afsP- T7 'ff 'fI ?. 5 1641.22 ' ' ' - 'Jr i TEE -.ea:fgzgg.f.L:: i f ' '- 1 In Tribute Mrs. Mildred Shaffer began her teaching career at Westmoreland Central School in February. 1945. She had obtained her bache- lor degree from the State University of New York at Albany. From 1946 to 1953. Mrs. Shaffer taught at Rushford Central School. At this time. she returned to Albany to earn her Masters degree in education. In September. 1955. Mrs. Shaffer joined the CMCS faculty. For fourteen years. she taught business. and became one of several faculty stalwarts to withstand the weathering effects of time. Mrs. Shaffer was also instru- mental in the production of the Ainotlelac and the publication of the Nt'w.s'hlu:er. Her superb management of the business affairs of the school's yearbook and newspaper un- burdened members of the editorial staffs. enabling them to rise to greater heights of creativity. Last June. Mrs. Shaffer was forced to retire from teaching because of illness. Her departure has left a regrettable void in CMCS' staff. In Memory Douglas LaFave. a member of the class of 1971. was an enterprising young man whose ambition it was to attend college and major in industrial psychology. Reading adventure stories and psychology books numbered among his favorite pastimes. Doug's amiable personality drew people to him. His friendly manner always seemed to exude warmth. The ease with which Doug related to people enabled him to successfully maintain a part-time job at Rich's Paint Store as well as participate in sports at school. Doug was greatly interested in athletics of the individual. ln his freshman year he won a junior varsity wrestling letter in the 127- pound class. Dougis sophomore year saw his physical stamina stretched nearly to the breaking point when he was the 2-mile runner for the CMCS track team. ln addition to his athletic regimentation at school. Doug worked out regularly with weights on his own. Another love of Doug's was cars. He was often seen just driving around town in his mothet s '63 Chevy. Words tend to echo hollowly when they attempt to soothe the pain of emptiness in the grieved hearts of relatives. All that we can say is that we deeply feel the loss of a dear friend. Advisers Mrs. Carole Koch, Mr. George Mulcahy, Miss Rita Therolf, Mr. Carlos Hevia. Webster defines the word class as a body of students or alumni whose year of graduation is the same. We, the members of the class of l970, hold testimony that Mr. Webster has barely touched the surface of the word's meaning. Through the warmth of intimate communication and shared academic and social ex- periences, we have delved into one another's hearts and established bonds of friendship that will last a lifetime. Although others had told us that senior year would be the finest, the expectation of our new status was but a mere shadow of the actual enjoyment we derived from it. Our title itself acted as a binding force, causing each of us to drop his mask of pretense and join into a unit based on mutual trust. The parade of succeeding Ulastw events-our last football game, our last pep rally, our last dance-though tinged with sadness was the culmination of our high school careers. ln our opinion, we missed nothing along the way. As the Class of 1970's term as seniors draws to a close, it would like to pay final tribute to the administration and faculty. They did not turn a deaf car to our requests for change, but instead guided our efforts notable results of which were the first Home- coming and the institution of a student lounge. This year the Caledonia-Mumford J.V squad once again displayed its showmanship on the gridiron. A determined LeRoy battalion that sought revenge for its older counterparts defeat the previous week was the only barrier between the Raiders and the league title. The mountain-like defensive line held five of its eight opponents scoreless while the yardage gained by the fleet-footed offense dwarfed that of the opposition, The result was the compilation of a fine 7-l record. The initial step in the produc- tion of a yearbook is the selection of a color liner pertinent to the theme that is trying to be con- veyed. Our theme was taken from a popular song Sunrise Sunset from the Broadway show Fiddler on the Roof that speaks of how swiftly children grow to be adults. ln keeping with our theme. we chose a sunset scene taken in the vicinity for our liner. Because the expensive gold seal on the cover of last yearis Aizzo- deluc' had been purchased as a representation of the school. it was decided to retain it on the cover of the l970 yearbook. As we planned the pages of the yearbook throughout the au- tumn. we came to the conclusion that pictures mean more to stu- dents if they are taken in an in- formal manner. Thus. we tried to stress casual backgrounds for our group pictures. As a general rule, the divider pages that introduce each section of the yearbook bear some rela- tionship to the theme. Since the Senior section introduces the book. we tried to progress from morning through afternoon to night in the subject matter of our divider pages in order to parallel our theme. At the completion of the Aino- dvlur in mid-February. we hope we have satisfied a majority of the student body. Our feeling is that the seemingly endless hours spent on the production of the yearbook will reap benefits for us when the finished product arrives. Delicate crepe streamers ol' pale blue. violet. and orchid produced an initial effect ol' dreaminess as we entered Fantasia . our memorable Junior Prom. on the eve ot' May 2-l. 1969. Suspended from the ceiling were five wire spheres covered entirely with fragile tlowers ol' tis- sue paper that were the painstaking handiwork of a number ot' class members. The creative hand of Julie Randall was re- sponsible l'or the most striking elements of the decor. Five picturesque seascapes ol' burlap illumi- nated by a blue tloodlight adorned one wall and augmented the lanciful mood ot' the atmosphere. At eleven o'clock the members ol' the court assembled on the immaculate bridge ol' white at the center ot' the gym. Their excited faces were mirrored in the clear bubbling water before them. Amidst the gentle fragrance of the lilacs that en- shrouded the lountain. each couple glided grace- fully up the red carpet to the flower-dotted crepe latticework that backgrounded the stage. The coro- nation ol' Gregory Buckley and Alice Flynn as prince and princess consummated our evening of elegance. Julie poses with Mike in front of one of her colorful masterpieces October 10, 196' Mr. Haff presents Homecoming Queen Kathy Nicholls with a bouquet of red roses. The theme of the Class of '71's float was Wamp 'Em . The huge papier-mache Raider Indian perched behind the goalpost was a product of Junior ingenuity and Li'l Abner's statue of Jubilation T. Cornpone. Multicolored napkins were used to create a floral effect in the backdrop for the love seat upon which Kathy rode. The crucial grid-iron clash between the Cale- donia-lvlumford Red Raiders and the Avon Braves on the crisp autumn evening of October IO. N69 was an apt setting for the first homecoming at CMCS. Float entries from grades 7-l2 paraded around the track during half-time of the football game to the gay accompaniment of the marching band. A committee of teachers judged the floats on originality of theme. degree of school spirit con- veyed. and general design. A plaque was awarded to the winning float. Each high school class also selected a Home- coming Queen candidate. The entire student body then voted to select a queen representative of the whole school. At the conclusion of the game a reception was held in the high school cafeteria for alumni and friends. Homecoming was heralded a success. lomecomirzg at CM CS The freshmen decorated their float Blast Off With The Spirit of 73 with a rocket enshrouded with pink and white flowers. Their queen can- didate was Cathy Buckley. The cynosure of the eighth grades float was a striking score- board reading Time 0:0lg Visitor 0-Home 74. The seventh graders captured the float plaque with their corn- field scene featuring Indians dancing around an Avon Brave being burned at the stake.
