Foreword On the following pages are recorded some of the important events that happened in the 1963-64 school year. Each of them-football games, class activities, and senior hall-has a special place in someonels high school memories. These were the best years of our lives. They were The friends we made. full of hard work, but we end them with a feeling of accomplishment. We, the members of the yearbook staff, hope that this thirty-ninth volume of Ainodelac will make this year's memories vivid for each of you. The dances we planned and enjoyed. -an President John Fitzgerald Kennedy ME ORIA On November 22, 1963, an assassin's bullet took from our country our young President, a leader in office only two years, ten months, and two days. Beloved by all, he was a man who was vigorous in his efforts and staunch in his duties for his people and who had already established a legendwith his now famous statement: uAsk not what your country can do for youg ask what you can do for your country. Suddenly the greatest country in the world found herself without a President. In the dark days of mourning, people all over the world joined us in our national grief. The smiling Irish eyes and wit were gone, but the torch of freedom was immediately passed to a new leader. No one will let it be forgotten that once there was a spot, for one brief shining moment, that was known as Camelot. Dedication E The Class of 1964- wishes to dedicate the Ainodelac this year to Mr. Lester aton. 6'Zeb, as he is affectionately known, has had many championship baseball and basketball teams since he has been in Caledonia. Through all these many years he has created an image. To his team he is the undisputed and respected leader. When things are not going well for the Raiders in a game, he never gets excited, but retains his composure and confidence in the boys, even when the game is over. To the boys hurt in sports, he is the soothing voice with the ice pack. To the townspeople he is a gentleman. His only show of emotion during a game is the impatient wagging of his ever-present towel. Largely due to his fine example, Caledonia enjoys a fine sportsmanship record. To you, Mr. Eaton, thank you for all you have done for us here at C. M. C. S. Mr. Lester Eaton Mrs. Grace Burdett Appreciation In appreciation, the senior class would like to dedicate this page in the year- book to Mrs. Burdett. We would like to thank her for preparing us for our high school years. Her classes were always interestingg and though at times she found it hard to put up with us, somehow she survived. Mrs. Burdett will always be remembered as the capable organizer of our elementary programs and for the adoption of Pavolos, our little Greek boy. For all of this we say thank you to a wonderful teacher and person, Mrs. Burdett. 3 ii . Eg, , N 1 fgg' 5 Q U t 3 21 1 ,, V .,X. fl t X 2 8 gl 4 . Q5 S'1 . 3 Qi' . W X ZW, ,. Mr. Freeman takes an extra interest in each of the high school pupils, and because ofthis his advice is appreciated. Mfhank-you, Mr. Freeman, for your consideration and guidance through the years. 8 Dr. Frederick Hinsdale Supervising Principal In September 1951 when the Class of 1964 started school, it was also Dr. Hinsdale's first year as principal of Caledonia-Mumford Central School. Throughout our many years here, he has been both a sympathetic friend and an understanding principal. To Dr. Hinsdale: thank you for your guidance, patience, and interest. Miss Theo Rossney Elementary Principal Last year Miss Rossney became elementary principal and added a great many more responsibilities to her already heavy schedule. Miss Rossney deserves an extra vote of thanks and appreria- lion for the efficient way in which she handles the problems ofthe elementary school, Joseph Ward Jr., Eugene Wyand, Robert Baldeck, John Randall, Lawrence Weber, Robert Jones, La Verne Vink. Board of Education To these seven men whose job it is to guarantee each pupil a good education, everyone in the district owes a vote of gratitude. They willingly serve for twelve months without pay to see that this is accomplished to the best of their ability. During the last few months they have been deep in the planning of the new, badly needed high school. Through their efforts Caledonia will have a beautiful, adequately equipped high school sometime in the next two years. Mrs. Minster The Senior Class would like to thank Mrs. Mary Minster for all the help she has given us, and especially with our money matters and with deco- rating problems for our Junior Prom and our Senior Ball. Mr. Walsh We wish to thank Mr. Edward Walsh for his helpful guidance counseling in our last two impor- tant high school years. Mrs. Wild Mrs. Ella Wild deserves a great deal of recogni- tion for her job as district clerk. She spends many long hours doing the school,s bookkeeping. To Mrs. Wild, Thank you. The year began with the arrival of our long- awaited class rings. Our first project was selling at the Dansville football game. We had a dance afterward which proved to be a success even though the game was not! immediately after this we undertook our sell- ing project. Our campaign was very successful, and nearly everyone met his quota. We then underwent the tremendous but enjoyable preparation for our most important event - the Jun- ior Prom. Our prom turned out to be a night we shall remember as one of the most exciting of our lives. During this time we also sold at several basketball games and had a record hop and a baked food sale. Now we shall begin writing our Class Day song, with the hope that this year we shall win! 35 65, Mr. McCormick Top Row: Jeanne Crane, Dean Hartford, Jerrie Davis, Kenneth Heale. Albert Cesare. After a very successful freshman year, we entered our sophomore year with great enthusiasm which lasted throughout the year. Our activities for the year began with selling refreshments at the home football game with Ceneseo. Valerie Hinsda Editor-in-Chief le Count Representatives Nate Richardson, Jamie Williams, Gary Grant and Loretta Cappotelli are Caledonia's delegates to the Livingston County Student Council for this school year. Council Activities This year the Student Council suggested that we dress up for our dances with the boys wearing white shirts and ties or white shirts and sweaters: the girls, skirts and sweaters or dresses. Also, once a person comes into a dance he cannot leave unless he pays to get back in. These are the main rules for school dances, with the exception of football victory dances. The Student Council voted in the idea of a school mascot. The topic was discussed thoroughly, and we now have an Indian as our mascot. Suggestions were made to have honor study halls. Such study halls would help in raising marks, develop personal pride and discipline, and help to prepare students for college. These honor study halls would be limited to those students qualifing for such an honor. It would enable them to be in the library and have the use of all available materials for research. These are only some of the many things that the student council officers and members planned for the school year 1963-1964. Whether a student belongs to a small chapter in a village school or is one of a large membership in a large city system, the requirements and qualifications remain the same. When candidates are being considered, the main qualities stressed are SCHOLARSHIP, SERVICE, LEADERSHIP, and CHARACTER. The recognition given to members of this national society is one of the most significant honors bestowed by schools. Academic Leaders NATIO NAL HONOR SOCIETY EL. A Lesson in Democracy Last June these three representatives from Caledonia joined some 1,400 other high school juniors from all over New York State and par- ticipated in Empire Boys' and Girls, States. These meetings were held at Colgate University and Cortland State Teachers College respectively. The delegates received a close look into the workings of American de- mocracy. They heard experts in politics speak, took an active part in the party campaigns, and made many close friends. But above all they learned what their country's heritage of democracy means to them as citizens. Since that time it has grown until there are F. T. A. members participating in the classroom activities of the majority of grade school classes and several high school classes. The members of this organization would like to express their gratitude to all the teachers who have taken part in this program and have helped to make it a success. A special vote of thanks goes to Mrs. Sheldon, our advisor, for her many hours of work on our behalf. l Advisor Mrs. Elizabeth Sheldon The first activity of the school year was the election of officers. Donald Ranous was elected presidentg Robert Bickford, vice-president, Gary Bubel, secretaryg George Hahn, treasurer, Gordon Booth, reporterg and Ronald Shoemaker, sentinel. Selling ads for our F. F. A. calendar was our first piece of business. After being divided into two teams, it was decided the losing team would entertain the winners at a chicken bar-b-que held in November. In October Gary Bubel, Robert Bickford, George Hahn and Larry Cornell were sent as delegates to the National Convention in Kansas City. Here the members were given awards for their accomplishments in agriculture. Summer brings exhibiting of livestock or produce at area fairs. The objective is to aid the librarian and other students. Through this objective club members learn more about libraries and how they are run. Club members are expected to spend one period a week work- ing in the library. This period may be spent preparing new books for the shelves, filing, making sure the books are in order, or arranging bulletin boards. If working in the grade library, the club member may be either reading to or stamping books for the younger children to take out. 74 The Service Club Back Row: Gretchen Bardeen. Marthena Williams. Here are some of the many who attended dancing in front of the southern mansion, On May 24, 1963, the Class of 1964- presented their Junior Prom, Cotillion. The southern theme was carried out in the southern mansion, with its wide porch, reminiscent of Scarlett O'Hara's home. The two small garden houses and the false ceiling were in two shades of pink and white. On each side of the door were fountains banked with flowers. The highlight of the evening came at eleven- thirty, when our prince and princess, .lim Whiteside and Loretta Cappotelli, were crowned by Queen Before: Loretta and Jim nervously wait for the procession with the other candidates. In this atmosphere the couples danced once again to the music of Slim Griffin's Blue Tones. The coronation, the evening's climax, was held at eleven 0'clock at which time Greg Connor and ,lenell Johnson were crowned King and Queen. As the school bell rings, the Webb and Gibbs children go off to school. On Saturday, December 7, The Senior Class presented Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer prize-winning drama, Our Town. The first act shows the every-day incidents of people in any small town, or more precisely in Our Town. The story starts at dawn, and both dialogue and action build up between the Gibbs and Webb families. Three years have passed, and in the second act George Gibbs and Emily Webb face their wedding day. Puppy love has blossomed into the real thing. A flashback shows George and Emily at the soda fountain when they first become aware of their love and discuss the future. In the third act Emily dies and is buried. Emily takes her place in the cemetery among the dead but cannot give up her memories of life. She returns to a day in her past. The re-enactment of her twelfth birthday makes her realize how blind she was to the joys of life. The frustration she suffers in trying to get others truly to love one another drives her back to her grave where she admits her foolishness. The play ends on a subtle note as the stage manager integrates the action in the play with the audience. It becomes indeed Our Town. Q! W. Although the Raiders ended the season losing six games and winning four, they came through in the tense B league circuit, winning three out of four league games. Strong hitting, fine pitching and fielding, and good team spirit were the prime factors that helped the team to a good season. These assets were demonstrated in the quarterfinal sectional game where Caledonia was defeated by Clifton Springs in a hard-fought extra inning contest.
