Whether it’s college, mar- riage, or a job they’re planning on after Graduation. But deep inside is a fear. A fear of losing contact with friends and teachers who have meant so much. Since Kindergarten, we have been searching for our- selves. Trying to be the people we want to be. But some- where along the line, we discovered a word called “caring.” Not for ourselves, but for others. We learned to care about people and sometimes put their lives ahead of our own. We JOYCE CARLSON Secretary DERBRA LOEFFLER Treasurer learned more words on our way, words like respect, accep- tance, sharing, and love. We found out the meanings in our own ways. And one of the most important things we learned is that we have so much more to learn. So much more to do and so much to see that we wonder if a lifetime will be long enough. There are times to be remembered. Each of us has our set of memories, remembrances of things that we feel were special to us. Perhaps, along with out knowledge, memories are the most important things we take with us. It was on a volunteer basis, so it consists of students who are willing to put time and effort into student government. Aside from the traditional homecoming sponsored by the student council, they also sponsored a “Christmas Fes- tival,” in which the five days preceding Christmas were all filled with various activities—ranging from “‘Candy Cane Day”’ to the election of the faculty King and Queen. otis a L. In June, Linda Peter represented Caledonia at Girls Stater for a weeks stay at St. Catherine’s College in St. Paul. The week was spent in lectures with elections held for city, county and state offices. Tom Doering and Mike McCarthy, chosen as Boy Staters attended assemblies and mock caucuses at St. Johns in Collegville. Huckelberry Finn On April 12 and 13, the Junior Class presented “Huck Finn.” Based on the book by Mark Twain, the play was dramatized by Jane Kendall. Taking place in the 1850’s in Louisiana, the play was centered around the adventure of Huck Finn and his best friend, Tom Sawyer. The two mischievous boys try to un- fold two frauds, the King and the Duke, who are trying to steal the hearts of the young Wilks girls and obtain posses- sion of their dead father’s money. Each character displayed unique acting ability with the help of directors Mrs. Mary Anderson and Mr. Thomas Cannon. The play, with touches of light-hearted humor and Gey dramatic essence, was labeled an outstanding success. JUNIOR PLAY CAST—Bottom: C. Kuecker, S. Beutler, D. Loeffler R. McCormick, J. Middendorf. Juniors worked hard to produce a dazzling royal effect—complete with a fountain, and garden setting. A mirror-ball was used for the first time which pro- duced a starry effect. Refreshments were served by freshmen: Gail Wiebke, Laurie Buttell, Tom Danielson, and Bob Con- way. “Nassau” provided the music from 8:00 to 12:00. As always, the highlight of the eve ning was the crowning of the 1973 prom royalty—Queen Barbara Ryan and King Steve Buttell. A line from the popular theme song says: “Nights in White Satin, never reaching the end...” But sadly enough, this night had to come to an end, but not without many happy memories of a mag- ical night. The Concert Marching Band got a new look this year when the Band Parents Association purchased new uniforms. They were late in arriving; but once the new uniforms arrived, everyone expressed admiration for them. Again this year the marching band did a fine job in competition to add still more awards to the trophy case. Throughout the year the band members have been busy practicing concert numbers, contest numbers, and solo and ensemble numbers. They should also be applauded for their fine pep band performances at pep rallies and basketball games. . At the pops concert this year the band members tried a money-making project that was new to this school. They held a parcel post sale. Each band member sent out cards to different parts of the country asking people to send parcels that they could sell; then at the concert, the packages were auctioned off. The project proved quite successful. The Concert Band sent three of its members to participate in All-State Band this past summer. They were Kris Ballard, tuba player, Kari Schroeder, clarinet player, and Margie Jahn, baritone saxophone player. Mr. Earp, the director of this fine group of musicians, and all the members in the band deserve our rec- ognition and support. SENIOR HIGH BAND: Row 1: V. Guillaume, percussion; K. Jazz Band °74 Caledonia Jazz Band had many new faces to replace fourteen seniors that graduated last spring. The new members worked hard and by November were ready for the Miester- singer Jazz festival where they were picked as one of the bands for the evening concert. The band has done several concerts and festivals during the year and at this writing is considering a third album. During March the band combined with the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse Tribe to do a benefit concert for the Day Activities Center. ccessory Band Personnel A lg I ¥ il tH HH I i HH The CHS marching band is more than a group of i a also includes the banner people playing instruments. The 1974 Tomahawk was put together by dedicated and willing stu- dents under the competent direction of fine advisors, working both during school days and even sometimes on days off. It is not uncommon to see 7 the business managers sacrificing noon hours to boost the sale of yearbooks. A yearbook is a memory in itself as we look back on our school years and remember mostly the good times. The °74 Tomahawk is one of the best pieces of nostalgia to come out of C.H.S. Whether you’re a custodian, student, principal or teacher, everyone likes a yearbook. Advisor Mrs. Pongratz with Senior Editors A. Weymiller and J. Everyone has put some work in it. Each one has a special job. The junior and senior editors and the supervisor put long hours in seeing that the right stories are put in and in actually creat- ing the paper. Of course, these people couldn’t do anything without the reporters, typists, and photographers. Without them, the job would be a very slow process. In June, another chapter member, Jim Dibley, partici- pated in the People-to-People Goodwill Tour to Europe along with twenty-three other Minnesota FFA’ers. In October, six members attended the National FFA convention in Kansas City, Missouri, bringing back new ideas and new enthusiasm for the organization. This year the money-making project carried out by the : FFA was a Corn Drive. The money earned by this project was given to Camp Winnebago. | In addition to this, the FFA has a basketball team and goes snowmobiling in the winter. He makes friends with a lonely young girl (Jane Briggs) and soon they have a very special relationship. The woman who yelled rape (Susan Heintz) insists on a punishment for the innocent man, and her demands are met by her husband (Joe Graf), assisted by Jay Rostvold and Tom Doering. The Caledonia Warriors, coached by Mr. Felix Percuoco, Mr. Ron Moen, and Mr. Terry Mullins, had their best season ever as they captured both the Root River and the District 1 Championships. Caledonia opened their season by beating Winona Cotter. Then came their only defeat of the season at the hands of Spring Valley, 14-0. Caledonia then won eight in a row. One of the toughest tests was against LaCrescent where Cale- donia won in overtime 14-12. After beating Houston, the Warriors had sole pos- session of the Root River Conference for the first time since 1968. This allowed them to play Preston for the District 1 Championship. They ended the season rated fifth in the state in Class “B”, one place short of playing for the State Championship. The Warriors scored 266 points while giving up only 94 points. The Warriors had six selections for All-Conference. They were seniors Gary Birkeland, Joe Graf, Roger Holland, Bob Link, Greg Moe, and Steve Schellsmidt. They also had three honorable mention: David Benson, David Otterson, and Tom Stapleton. Although losing sixteen seniors, there will be 17 returning lettermen to make up the nucleus of the 74-75 Warrior team. Bob Link, LaCrosse Tribune Coulee Region Player of the Year for 1973, ended the season with a three year rushing total of 3,657 yards. He carried the ball 266 times for 1,724 yards this season for a 6.5 average, and also won the league scoring title for the third straight year. He was three times named to the all-Root River team, and was an honorable men- tion all-Minnesota player this : year. 3 : SENIOR FOOTBALL PLAYERS: Row 1: B. Link, S. Schellsmidt, T. Doering, M. The Warriors also placed third in the district meet behind Rushford and Chatfield. Two district team members, Peter and Paul Wagner, qualified for the regional championship at Rochester. The Warriors are looking for an even better season next year with returning lettermen Jay Rostvold and Mike Stadtler, seniors; Pete Wagner, Paul Wagner, Dave Johnson, and Larry Janikowski, juniors; Carl Simons, sophomore. The Warriors will also have a strong B-squad to back up the A team. The team, coached by Ward Huff, has its home course at Ma-Cal-Grove Country Club. Besides holding the state record for consecutive wins with 83, the Warriors also have taken the Caledonia Invita- tional for four straight years. They have also taken the Dis- trict Championship for seven consecutive years. This year they finished second in the region and tied for 15th place in state competition. Although losing 10 seniors, 8 which were regular start- ers, head coach Leo Simons says that he has a good team to replace the graduating seniors. The B squad did not lose this season, showing the upcoming strength.
