Because of in- clement weather, the bonfire was held in the gym. Poor lighting forced the football players to Spring Grove. The game ended in a victory for the Warriors despite this change. Bittersweet played at the dance on Saturday night. King Dean Wohlers and Queen Joni Wiebke led the grand march at 11:00. Even with all of the problems, the whole weekend was a total success. Kaufman, “The Man Who Came to Dinner.” The story, which took place in the late 1930's, was set in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest W. Stanley. The play provided viewers with humor and enjoyment. Every character displayed his own uniqueness and originality with help from co-directors Mrs. Sharon Ohl and Mrs. Mary Anderson. Leading the all-star cast were Steven Erwin as Sheridan Whiteside and Rita Kosse as Maggie Cutler, his secretary. 41 Play Cast—Row 1: N. Albert, C. Thiele. Row 2: P. Danaher, S. St. Mary, B. The parable of love consisted of a boy, not quite grown up, (Steve Erwin) and his sweet 16 and just as ignorant girl- friend, (Sharon St. Mary). Next-door neighbors, they are separated by a wall put up by their mothers. (The wall was built so that the two would get together.) When it came time to tear it down an elaborate abduction was staged. The wall came down and it was called a “happy ending.” Following the sunrise, everybody became fed up with everybody else. Yet time passes and wounds heal and all learn that “without a hurt the heart is hollow”. C, Graf STUDENT DIRECTORS C, Eikens 43 ¥ % ¥ qo ) ar ae 2625 SSS Dana Hayes crowns the 1972 Queen. As the couples arrived, they entered the forest by passing over an enchanted bridge, draped in vines illuminated with lights. Murals formed the edge of the woods, and brightly painted mush- rooms were scattered throughout the floor. Punch was served from flower carts by fairy princes and princesses, and music was played by Sunflower. The climax of the evening was the coronation . of the 1972 King and Queen. The 1971 Royalty, Mike Smerud and Dana Hayes, were present to en- throne the new couple, Greg Schultz and Sandy Oseth. The choir performs music of all styles at these appearances, ranging from popular music to the music of the Rennaissance. The Concert Choir also participates in the district and regional state music contests, where it has fared very well for the past several years, winning high ratings consistently. One highlight of the 1972-73 school year was a clinic-workshop with the Augustana College Choir of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Senior Choir member Sharon St. Mary was honored at the Luther College Dorian Festival by being selected as one of seven soloists to appear in the Dorian Festival Grand Concert. This honor earned Sharon the privilege of appearing in the “America’s Youth In Concert” program sponsored by Ameri- can Airlines, which presents annual concerts in Carnegie Hall in New York. The Swing Choir re- hearses outside of school time and sings music mainly in the popular style featuring several numbers with choreography. Members of the Swing Choir are chosen through auditions. The summer of 1972 was filled with hard work and much fun. The Concert Marching Band drilled extensively throughout the summer on its marching tech- niques and on its field routines, and in return it marched at many parades, including the Aquatennial Parade in Minneapolis where it placed among the top bands. The band also performed a field routine at the State Fair. As a result, many new tro- phies were added to the band’s collection. Rehearsals for concerts and contests started with the beginning of the school year. Three events dominate the year, the Winter, Pops, and Spring Concerts. Prac- tice for large group and solo and ensemble contests also keep the band busy. Four of the Concert Band’s members were chosen for the All State Band, Kris Ballard, Carol Eikens, Steve Erwin, and Jean Wiegrefe. This is the largest num- ber of students from one school attending the All-State Band Camp. The Senior High Stage Band also enjoyed an excellent season. The Stage Band visited the Wartburg College Jazz Festival where it was considered one of the best high school groups attending. In February 1973 the Stage Band performed be- fore the Minnesota Music Educator’s Association as one of the two clinic bands chosen. All-State Band: C. Eikens, J. Wiegrefe. In order to play jazz a student must study and understand in greater depth the basic fundamentals of the music he plays. A performer’s knowledge must include chord progressions, theory, use of altered scales, form, theme and variations, melody, and rhythm. All of these ele- ments and more must be understood before the performer can give vent ot his | creativity. To be inventive, individualistic, and creative, to “do your own thing” has +} brought about a great interest in jazz among the students and people in the com- | munity. | During the past year the jazz band has produced two albums, appeared in numerous festivals and concerts, performed at the Music Educators Convention, re- corded a TV show for the Minnesota State High School League, and has been heard by literally millions of people. Letters and comments by music educators through- out the state attest to the fact that they are one of the finest performing groups in the state. The music the band performs is on the college level and extremely de- manding. It has been thisdirectors pleasure to work with the finest group of musicians any school ever had. We should all take pride in our ban- ner and flag carriers, majorettes and drill team. The banner carriers and majorettes identify our bands, and the drill teams also provide half time en- tertainment. The long hours of practice by the accessory personnel are re- flected in the praise which they bring to our school. Working daily during 5th hour and many hours until early March when the final pages go off to the printers are the four editors and their helpers. When they thought the work was done, they found that there was twice as much left to do. Pages to be planned, write-ups to do and pictures to be taken and always the proper trimming and finally the paste ups. Although the job required complete dedication, there were several days for leisure. You may wonder why they do it. They don’t get paid, but they get the personal satisfaction in seeing what they have created for their fellow students. Because of the new ideas acquired, the Smoke Signal has developed in several ways. Everything from the content to the layout to the head- ings were altered. As a result, the Smoke Signal has developed into a magazine-style periodical with feature writing, editorials, and plenty of pictures provided. Offset printing was used to publish the paper. Negatives of the layout were made. The production was done in the Audio-Visual room. Usually about 1100 copies were made an issue. This worthwhile experience took place at St. Johns University at Collegeville, Minnesota. As Caledonia’s Girl Stater, Mary Burg traveled to St. Paul for a weeks stay at St. Catherine’s College. Over 400 girls from all over the state attended. Girl’s and Boy’s State is carried on annually by the American Legion. This program stresses Americanism. Its purpose is to give young men and women actual experiences in the way local and state government is run. This experience is to create interest and desire to practice sound government in our everyday lives. Left: S. Erwin, M. Burg, L. Drogemuller. Posting an 8 and 4 record, the Warriors went into District 1 play behind the strong hitting of Mark Lange, Tom Stark and seven other players, a thunderous bench, and fine coaching of Bob Stark. The Warriors took four straight games and the District | title. Traveling to Red Wing for the Re- gional tournament, The Warriors lost their first and only game against Lake City. The strong Lake City team then finished third in the State tourna- ment play and was the only team to score against the first place Richfield team. The determination of John Con- way and the coolness of Gary Birke- land pulled the Warriors out of many scrapes in the pitching depart- ment. With the hitting of Mark Lange, .551, and the razzel dazzel of Tom Stark and Dave Brown on the bases, the Warriors overpowered many strong opponents. The Warriors, behind the fielding abilities of Dean Wohlers, Doug Wiegrefe’s batting, and Kris Ballard and Dave Otterson’s clutch hitting in tournaments, should be a strong con- tender in the Root River and District competition next year. The Warriors went on to the district meet at the Ferndale Country Club in Rushford, where they placed second, only five strokes behind Rushford. The team was led by its number 1 man, Charles Lee, who got a 33 his first round, which was 3 under par, and in pouring rain fin- ished his second round with a 39. Our Faculty There are very few people that realize the responsibility that the faculty and administration have in running and teaching a school. These people help with molding and shap- ing the students who will one day be sent to solve the prob- lems of the world. The Board of Education has tried to con- struct a system which is progressive, educational, and built on the interests of the youth of Caledonia. Classes this year, taught by the fifty members of our Senior and Junior High faculty, ranged from Child Develop- ment to Boys Home Economics and from Economics to Agriculture. In October several teachers attended a session of the Minnesota Educational Association. In January the faculty sponsored a record hop at which the y held drawings for records and albums that the students had picked out them- selves. Mrs. Mary Anderson Library, English Mr. David Earp Band 104 Mr. Everett Austin Shop Mrs. Janet Ford Home Economics CHS has concerned teachers. In each special depart- ment the man or woman preparing the classes is ready to | bring their knowledge to us, so that when we no longer have their aid, their consel, and their experience, we'll be ready for the kind of life they’ve helped us pick. Teachers head practically every club or team in school, and this accounts for the wide range of extra curricular ac- tivities at C.H.S. After school ends health teachers turn into coaches for both boy’s and girl’s sports. There are news- papers to get edited and speeches to be made. English teachers have developed strong Drama and Debate Teams, and the endless list of clubs like G.R.A., F.F.A., F.H.A., Spanish Club and Mat Maids gets longer every year. Miss Sue Barto Phy.
