This year many hours have been spent, not only in formulating school policies, but also in planning new and bet- ter facilitics for us. l ll insure-mv ,gf if A 1' 1, X Us iedrtdii-E..-,' 1424297 SENIOR OFFICERS Second row: Mrs. Alford. Pat Montgomery, Bob Russell, Rod Kuhn, Marlene Hymer, Ted Schadewitz. Venita Andrews. Mr. Hopper. First row: Boyd Austin ,loe Larson, Kenneth Deboy, Don Murrison. Seventy-nine frightened freshmen entered Calaveras in September 1948. We shall long remember with what fear and trembling we looked forward to the Freshman initiation. and it was not until after it was over that we really began to feel at home. The highlight of our sophomore year was our trip to the College of the Pacific where we saw a production of Julius Caeser. All our efforts in our junior year were devoted to making the ,lunior-Senior Prom a success. The theme Enchanted Islandw was carried out beautifully and in great detail: everyone agreed that it was the hbest ever. Mrs. Alford and Mr. Hopper, who have been our sponsors for the past three years. worked diligently with the committees to plan the banquet and decorate the gym. As juniors. we took upon ourselves the task of revising the Student Body Constitu- tion in order to make the government of our school more democratic: equal class representation in the Student Council and provision for regular Student Body and Student Council meetings were some of the revisions. Our class has always been high in scholarship having an average of seventeen on the honor roll each semester. Martha Cates, Gwen McClelland, Janet Rossetti and Frank Sanclretto were elected to membership in the National Honor Society at the end of their junior year. A chapter of CSF was established in February 1952 and several seniors will receive the gold seal on their diplomas. ln athletics. as well as in scholarship. many members of our class have been out- standing. Francis Kirk made a letter in varsity football in his freshman year. This year. seventeen out of a twenty-five man squad in football and eight out of eleven in basketball are members of the senior class. We shall never forget the past four years we have spent at the Rock, nor the many happy times we have had and the friends we have made. 1 ' f? A chapter of the CALIFORNIA SCHOLARSHIP FEDERATION was founded this year at Calaveras Union High School. The purpose of this organization is to promote higher scholastic achievement and to have an active group of honor students. A student must apply for membership in C. S. F. every semester. To be accepted hc must have a minimum of ten points, two of which may be earned by participating in extra curricular activities. An A received in an academic subject is worth three points and a B one. Seniors who have been members for six semesters receive a gold seal on their diplomas and the C. S. F. lamp pin. Sr-cond row: Mrs. Alford, Vvnita Andrews, Frank Sandretto, Cc-ne Weatherby, Kenneth Da-boy Gwen McClelland. Janet Rossa-Ili, Bob Kamena, Daryl Jordan. For the first time, class representatives met with the student body officers to discuss and decide upon matters affecting the student body. Regular monthly student body meetings have been held, thus giving all students an opportunity to express their opinions. Some of the members of the Student Council were in the group that helped to revise the Constitution and bring it up to date. The Council sent student delegates to various youth conferences. Due to the efforts of this organization, the advantages of belonging to the California Scholarship Feder- ation were explained to the Student Body, which voted to establish a chapter of CSF at Calaveras Union High School. Plans are under way to form a Student Court with the members of the Student Council acting as Supreme Judges. lt is indeed an honor to hold a Student Council office and any student who is a member of the Council receives many benefits, training in leadership and practice in representative government. , Arlin Jasper President .......,.,,... Some members of the band and chorus attended a Music Festival in Modesto. During the Christmas season, the CHORUS gave several numbers for our student body and for Fricot Ranch School. Later in the year, they entertained the Parent Teachers Association in West Point. Spring activities will include several concerts here and in surrounding communities. High point of the season for the Redskin cagers was defeating the championship Bret Harte team by the score of 47-4-6 in their final league game. A free throw by Langley with 4- seconds to go spelled victory for the jubilant Redskins. In the Mother Lode Tournament, Calaveras was eliminated from the second round by a red-hot Jackson five, dropping the game 51-50. Leading the Redskins in scoring and terrific ball handling were Ted Schadewitz with 314 points and Bob Russell with 328. Bruce Langley, Francis Kirk, Boyd Austin, Joe Larson and Larry Quarton together with Schadewitz and Russell will graduate, leaving a hard job of rebuilding for next year's coach. H fgasiefk f Bringing a mediocre season to a close with a five win, five loss league record, the Calaveras High HB basketballers nevertheless showed plenty of potential for building next year's varsity, The best effort of the B season was the 52-33 rout of Bret Harte in the Mother Lode Tournament. After an even first half, Calaveras, led by Bob Wimberly and Larry Cline, played a spectacular brand of basketball to beat the Bullfrogs, who had posted two league victories over the Redskins. The B's', played fair ball all season with Bob Wimberly, Earl Henley and Gilbert Quinones leading the team at various times.
