Dudley Xveatherwax, Quigis crony, is a young man about town whose- chief characteristics are, his wise advice and enormous appetite. Maria juclkins, homilier than any girl in the neighborhood, to whom Quig proposes marriage, because she seems likely to become an old maid, refuses his suit and marries a local bachelor. Hiram Huckleton, the village grocer, although he doesn't want to lose- 3 Quig, his clerk, sends him off to N. Y. with the advice to keep all his money well distributed in his pockets and fasten each pocket with a safety pin.
