Henderson sat waltlng to be admitted mto the offxce of the Clty Record s managlng edltor he recognlzed something famlllar ln the slim straight flgure of a glrl who was standing her back towards hlm on the far slde of the newspaper room Henderson rose and started ln her dlrectxon then stopped glVlng hrs shoulders a qurck shrug He turned to go back to hls seat near the edltor s door Then he turned about and contmued to stare hard at the motionless flgure stlll stand mg ln the sunllght of the open west wmdow lt was not Peggy He was sure of that Peggy was ln Boston not New York and besldes Peg y was succe ful All th news that blew back to the llttle town that she lad deserted two years ago told of her success She had a flne posltlon ID Boston wrltmg stories sketches plays and even novels But the glrl that he was looklnff at could not have been Peg f Watertown The blue ser e Slllt that she wore drd not flt her and was dusty Her llttle hat was drooped at awkward az gles lt was not at all raceful and her unshmed slippers were badly turned at the heels A small office boy came ln and sald to him Mr Anson will see you now Snr This was the appomtment that he had sought for weeks The glrl at the far wmclow took this lnstant to turn catch up a fur from the chair bCS1ClCS her walk swiftly across the room and disappeared ID the hall outslde It was Ieggy He was sure of nt now Although her face was pale and there were dark clrcles beneath her big blue eyes Henderson stood there thlnklng as Peggy was the one vlrl that he had always loved He had never loved any other woman and would probably rcver love another Thus was one of the reasons why xt was so l'ard for hxm to say oodby on that day two years ago when he had stood rn the station at Watertown and watched the tram to N Y take her awa But he had rot told her even then that he loved her Tell Mr Anson l couldnt WHIY he said to the ofhce boy l ll be back later Henderson dld not walt for 'ln answer but hurried out He just reached the mam floor of the buxldlng rn tlmc to see the blue sklrt turn the corner He followed her through the crowded street hopln that he mlght get a chance to speak to her because he thought that she needed hlm to help her She kept turnmv mto narrow side streets as lf she was not sure where she was golng She stopped and looked rn all the unwashed windows of various cheap shops Finally she paused ln front of a cheap restaurant a few seconds then entered He drew up ln front of the restaurant and read the Sl n whnch she had been studymg before him Curl wanted to want on table Apply wlthm Crarg stood dumfounded for a half minute gazmfr at the Sl n and exterlor of the restaurant whlch was by no means an elaborate one He then pushed open the door and walked m but Peggy was no where ln slvht Cral walked to the rear of the bunldmv and back agaln a couple of tlmes wlthout even catching a lxmpse of her so approachmg the proprietor asked What has become of the youn lady that just came m a moment before l drd Upon TCCCIVIDU an none to ClVll answer Craig left the bulldlhf' and wandered back to the newspaper ofhce still wonderlng what had become of Peg y so suddenly Somehow or other he felt he would see her a am 4 I . n u s D . . . , v . . - ' - v .
