A Blrd of Flne Feathers LOUISE PODESTA rump KRIII srom UST as Velma stepped off the tram she looked around and saw many of her school frrends They came runnrn0 up to her to say hello and telling her that a new famrly just moved m town and they were to lrve ln the house next to Velma s home Velma talked to them and saw her brother wartlng for her rn their new car On thelr way home her brother ames told her about therr new nelghbors He sard there was a lrttle grrl about Velma s age and a lrttle boy The next Monday they were to start to School after the Chrrstmas vacatron Velma put on her new bonnet and scarf that she had just received for Chrlstmas and was gomv to wear them to school as all the other grrls had them When she left she thought she would go and ask the gurl next to them to walk to school with her When she knocked at their neighbor s door a rrl appeared and Velma sard Good lVlorn1n0 l came rn to see rf you were ready for school you could come with me All rrght lm lad you came just a second and l ll get my coat and hat replred the gurl Her name was Frances was a tall rrl for her ave 'Ind qurte pretty When she reached for her hat she saw rt was an old fashroned faded purple hat Velma thou ht the rrls would lau h at her and would not lrke ner so she sand to Frances Let s wear one another s hat for a week and then Frances had notlced Velma had a very pretty bonnet so she a reed When Velma got to school all the rrls laughed at her for wearmg such an old hat Velma drd not pay any attentron to them at first but that nrght her brother asked her why she was wearm such a funny hat She pard no attentron to what ames asked her Later her father sard there was to be some kmd of an entertarnm nt and that they were omg He sard rt would cost a dollar apiece Velma asked her father rf she could not have her dollar and she would stay home He dldn t llke the rdea but he sald All rr hr The next clay she went down town and bought another bonnet and enou h yarn to knlt another scarf When she had frnlshed knrttln he f r scar she told Frances to keep her scarf and bonnet and she had another set and now they both had a scarf and bonnet alrke Now when she wore her new set the lrls clrd not laugh at her a am 1 . ,. , , , V. , , . .
