LITERARY DEPARTMENT The Old Album B J Velda Schrack IIRSI Plllfl Sl RX ARLX ln the afternoon a vroup or Camp Fire Cnrls cllmbed a low hull and looked lnto a little valley sxtuated among the fir trlmmed mountains of Nermont Early une had covered 1t wlth flowers and the birds enjoyed the cool water of a very small stream running down the mlddle of the valley Across the valley a bulldlng stood amonv the trees From where they stood the gxrls could see a low broken fence and vme covered walk No doubt xt was a forsaken home They ran down the hlll and across the valley As they approached the house 'ney found that It had not been mhablted for many ycwrs Alter much pullmv and pushmg the old gate fmally opened .-nd xls rusty hmves sent forth a loud creekmg nolse The garden had once upon a tlme been beautxful Across the Gravel path rose bushes had grown and lntertwlned thelr branches untll a thlcket of plnk and whlte roses filled It l ong 'frass Grew up between the branches but from somewhere came the sweetness of a flower not a rose for lt w s sweeter than a rose lts '1 hly excl.-umed Myrtle A vxolet added Lavma and the urls bevan parting the Grass and vmes to fmd lt Here lt IS whxspered Reva as she gently pressed the grass down around lt A tmy white flower set 1n nts bed of grass appeared Oh' a carnatlon exclaxmecl several voices How sweet and wonderful xt IS sard Lavma carnatlon the most wonderful flower ln the Garden Leave lt there and come explore the house suggested eanne The thlck entanglement of rose bushes closed all entrance to the house by the walk The glrls retraced their steps to the gate and followed the fence around to tl e slde of the house The Grass was very tall and now and then a stray rose branch crept alon the broken fence A tmy vlol t thrust 1ts del cate face up between the blades of vrass when rt was pre sed 'lslde for a path The house was old and weather beaten S veral boards were mnsslnv on the porch Iloor the steps were broken a corner post of the porch had fallen down and lay across a whlte rose bush The door yielded to a Gentle push and the glrls found themselves mslde the house They stood amazed and gazed about the room 1nto whlch they had entered which had no doubt been a Slttlil'-7 room X few ch urs a table and an open flre place met thelr wanderlnff vlances They entered a dlI1ll'l0 room and a kltchen whlch too contained fUl'llltUfC and then a bedroom Thus was the most surprlslnv of all A bed wnh its neat coverm stood near the wmdow 'x chalr or two 'md an old fashloned dresser with queer carvxnfrs and heawy dust covered mirror whlch stood ln one corner of the room where the sun llvht came throuf h the wmdow and played on the face ln a picture wlth xts tmy silver frame It was the pxcture of a beautiful young glrl The top drawer of the dresser opened and nn lt lay a Ur at book Open xt whlspered Reva No leave lt there replled eanne b It the temptatron was too 1 rent and earne who loved old quaint thmfs took It out They opened rt md .1 beautlful baby f ce w1th lauvhm eyes fr'1med ln 1 olden curls looked up it them The picture was exvht mches by ten mches 'md hand painted A. small enx elope w xs sllpped ln the slde of the picture and fmm its Qi 46 u W- V - vw Y 4' . .
