maart uf Ebutaiiuun Left to right, Lawrence Witte, Pres , Lumir Volta, Harlin Freese, Frank Dierickx, Wilbert Mente, and Alfred Rowold, Sec THE SCHOOL SYSTEM GROWS UP The citizens of neatland have always be n aware of the ne cessity of good educational facilities This is proven bv the fact that both public and private schools were established soon Private, or select schoolsas they were usually called, were an educational feature in Wheatland u til the late '6O's e teacher's comoensation was derived from a weekly or monthly fee paid to her direct by the parents of her pupils The high cost of text books was no problem as the student was taught from any book that happened to be in his possession whether it was a ore historic Montgomery Vard catalog or the family scrap book The first public school was held on the lower floor of a c1t1zen's home The need of a school building was soon recog nized and a building was erected for this purpose A sin le room was all the structure contained and only oneteacher was em ployed although it is alledged that at one time the pupils num bered 108 The last term of school held in this building was in 1867 The old school house was demolished to make a place for the present edifice which was completed in 1868 This project did not end the educational advancement in Wheatland. On November 7, 195O,a modern brick addition was ded icated which provided the necessary space for the increasing en rollments. In contrastto the one room school with one instruct or, the present system consistsof six grade rooms, several class rooms for the high school, including a large assembly room, a vocational agriculture room, a home economics room, a gymnasium, a cafeteria, a music room and a facultyof six grade teachers and seven high school teachers.
