STAGGO Softball Basketball Broadcaster Echo Stude tCo n l s Play Ju or Play S L b a nan O tette Ho o Roll Amer can Legxon Semor Class H :story For us the 1950 graduates of Calamus Hxgh School lt all began on August 26 1946 wxth an enrollment of nlneteen They were Georgia Gage Darlene Grau Jean Hass James Hendes LOIS Hoag Phxlxp Huetter V1rg1n1a Jacobsen Ralph Lee Marlene Malmanger V1v1an McNe11 Lucglle Meler Alols Mueller Dolores Mueller Owen Morehead Otto Olson Janet Peters Fllen Saunders Marcella Stagg and Gene Untxedt Phxllxp Huetter was elected class presxdent On September I' the Sophomores showed us poor sh1ver1ng Freshmen how mean they could be when they formally 1mt1ated us Marlene Malmanger and Ralph Lee were chosen as the best dressed g1rl and boy By October ll we had fully recovered from the horrors of 1mt1at1on and gave a return party for the hlgh school and faculty Durnng the school year Ralph Lee dropped out of our class but Herman Zlmmermann jolned ue nn February As Sophomores we were gzven the pleasure of puttlng the Freshmen through tortures On January I0 1948 we lnvxted everyone to a skatlng party at the prom mn Davenport Durmg our second year of hlgh school we gamed a new classmate Marllyn Bruckman Otto Olson Owen Morehead and Herman Zimmermann left us however Luc111e Meter was our class presxdent and Mrs J O Mecklenburg was our class sponsor We began our Jumor year with Marcella Staggs servmg as presxdent and Mr Vvestphal as our sponsor At the school carmval our candldate, Alo1s Mueller was crowned queen A play Spooky Tavern was presented December I0 wxth Mr Gundacker as the dlrector Jo Ann Gundacker and John Schmltt were new addztmns to our class. On Aprll 23, 1949, we entertamed the Semors and faculty at the annual Junior Senlor banquet We carrzed out a Hawanan theme and after the banquet, whxch was held 1n the school gym, we attended a mov1e 1n Davenport. We began our last year at CHS wxth twenty members. Paul Hansen was our new classmate. Gene Untxedt left us, however, shortly after school started, leavzng ue w1th a graduatmg class of nmeteen. Jo Ann Gundacker served as Semor presxdent and Mr. Marston as sponsor On October 20, l949, our class had thexr p1ctures taken at Lasswel1's Stud1o 1n Cedar Rapxds Dolores was crowned as queen of the carmval Out of our class of mneteen, the followmg have spent all thexr school days together here at Calamus. Sen :or Class Prophecy Everyone xs wondermg what w1ll happen to the class of 50 There has been a number of opmzons vox ed, but we won t go lnto them Instead, let s gaze mto the crystal ball and see what really xs ahead for the Senzors of CHS It s 1965 as we go down Mam Street nn Calamus, we see a newly erected funeral parlor Phxl Huetter, who always seemed to be mterested 1n bodxes, 18 manager of the estabhshment As we enter the front door, John Schmitt, Phzl s asslstant, greets us wxth h1s man eatmng smlle Anythmg we can do for you today? asks John Upon recexvmg thzs warm welcome we qulckly retreat back to the street As we walk along we see a huge szgn outslde of a theater that says BIGGEST SHOW IN TOWN Starring MARLENE MALMANGER NEW BUBBLE DANCING SENSATION We notxce that the casluer at the box off1ce IS Lozs Hoag, so we buy a txcket to the show After a hxlarxous two hour show we leave the theater to seek qmeter grounds fAll the men kept yellmg take 1t off very nerve wrackmg I We dec1de that nothmg could be qumeter than the scnool house so we head for the south sxde to dear old CHS As we vzsxt the classrooms, we dxscover that many members of the class of 50, are now teachers Georgia Gage is the Klndergarten teacher, V1v1a.n McNe1l 19 teachmg the Thxrd grade and Darlene Grau IS domg her best to keep the Smxth graders ln order Going xnto the lugh school department we fmd that Alols Mueller IS teachlng Home Economlcs and Chemrstry After vlsltmg the school we decide to go for a rlde As we pass through the resmdentlal ldohzes D1ck Contxno I Further on down the street we see a woman chasmg two chlldren We dlscover that xt IS Marllyn Bruckman Morehead, trying to get her llttle angels 1n for the1r afternoon nap Travelxng out 1mo the country we stop to vxsxt Delmar and Marcella Husen Much to our sorrow we learn that Delmar 15 havlng trouble wxth hxs plgs However, Lucllle Meler and Jo Ann Gundacker, who are becommg well known vetermarzans 1n th1s area, are called out to the Husen farm to check the axlment The pigs are begmmng to look healthzer, so we take our departure On our way we pass a very progresswe lookmg farm We xmmediately know, of course that thxs as where Paul Hansen and J1m Hendes, two conflrmed bachelors, are l1v1ng After such a tryxng day, we feel ln need of repalr We enter an establishment wxth a sxgn out front that says Jacobsen s Upon entermg, we are greeted by the receptxomst, Jean Hass She leads us to V1rg1n1a Jacobsen, proprzetor, who turns on the steam for our steam baths Just as we are begmnxng to feel great, Ellen Saunders comes and lets us out of our baths She takes us mto a lxttle room where she gxves us a vlgorous massage After recexvmg thls workout we walk on and see a cafe called Monkey s Place Upon entermg we hear a famxlxar voxce, that of Dolores Mueller shoutmg toward the kxtchen D1ck, throw two ham specxals out, only to hear D1ck yell back, Oh do nt yourself I m busy readnng comlc books Dolores and D1ck are stlll feudmg as they ask us to spend the nzght with them 10 section of town, we see Janet Peters out on her front porchpolishing an accordian. fShe still an - - io - no D ' . 1
