MT. PALOMAR is a peak located in the northern portion of San Diego County, southernmost county in the State of California. The mountain is over five thousand feet in height; it is covered with forest growth on the northern slopes, and desert flora on the southern. By l94O there will be com- pleted, on a site on top of Palomar Mountain, the largest telescope in the world. This instrument, of the reflector type, has a mirror whose diameter of two hundred inches will double that of any other telescope eye now in exis- tence. While the mirror itself is being ground in a specially constructed build- ing on the Caltech campus, a crew is continuously laboring to complete the dome to house the glass; it is about this dome that the pictorial work of the annual has been woven.
