While Rocke- feller began investigations into the misdeeds of the CIA and Ford announced the U.S. was in a recession, the Bicentennial celebrations officially began. In April, Vietnam again entered the news as the re- maining U.S. personnel had to be evacuated from Saigon. Meanwhile, New York City was in the midst of financial crisis. The danger of aerosol sprays to the atmosphere, an assassination at- tempt on Ford, the UN declaration of Zionism as a form of racism, and the dictatorial emergency in India were other newsworthy events. : : m i« r« 111 .1 f The World Around Us — America demonstrated its capacity to adapt in 1976. Old faces reappeared and new faces stepped forward to provide new hopes. The Win- ter Olympics, Surveyor's Mars photos, the national political conventions and the election of Jimmy Carter dominated the news and TV screens. The U.S. '.. began to celebrate our 200th birthday. Marijuana was decriminalized in California, a ne.v investi- • i I’gation of the Kennedy and King assassinations was begun, and in Congress a new scandal began IQKggW as a result of Elizabeth Ray's revelations. Mean- WafeSm while, old faces made one last appearance iSSijhja as Eldridqe Cleaver returned to the U.S. for trial. Moo died in China, and King Kong returner! to New 0 0 York in an oil tanker. ----------------------------------------- ( The World Around Us I _______________________✓ Extremes in weather continued in ‘77. East- j ern blizzards resulted in floods, natural gas shortages and blackouts. Western drought bred «SB rampant fires and water rationing. Newly-elected President Carter faces such issues as energy con- servation. the Concorde, the B-1 bomber cruise mis- sile controversy, Panama Canal and Laetril debates. J V Idi Amin. Roots and black independence brought Africa into the news. To many, the deaths of Elvis and Groucho signaled the end of an era. Despite mass kidnappings, the KLM Pan Am crash, Washington imprisonments and gay rights tensions, hopes for the future appear- ed in movies like Star Wars, the £ Alaskan pipeline, the Space M- Shuttle and improved Cuban relations. The drought was over, but the storms that followed were, in many parts of the I country, billiards and floods. President Carter's popularity was on the downswing because of his foreign policy and the releasing of the Panama Canal. The court rules for Bafcke, but condones affirmative action. The nation watched k as Californians staged the Great Tax Revolt, better . known as Proposition 13. Champ ons of world peace i were weary with the loss of two Popes, the Russian spy • trials, the People's Temple mass suicide and murders in •—_ Guyana, and continued tension in the M� dde East. ——- Issues still pending were the E RA. the Neutron —. ■ Bomb, the Self Rule plan in Rhodesia, paraquat poisonings, Cuban tension and the threat of Co d v —- War. They wrostled such top teams as Bakorsfield, Iowa State, Iowa University, and Orogon Stato. They were only one of two teams nationwide to qualify ten men from the Regionals to go to the Nationals. They are the five time Western Regionals champions. Despite these higher achievements, tho Mustangs did suffer some setbacks. Gary Fischer. 118. Jr., was injured during national competition and became unable to compete. Scott Heaton. 167, Jr., an NCAA wrestling placer and Steve Hitchcock. 150. They took first place at the Cal Aggio Invitational at Davis, the Stanford Invitational at Palo Alto, the Fresno Invitational at Fresno, and the Cal Poly Invitational hero at Cal Poly. Their list of accomplishments does not end hero however, they later went on to win the Division II NCAA championship. Jim Schankel led the team to their national championship. Ho wont undofeated for the season and after finishing first in the Division II championship ho lator went on to compete in the NCAA Division I championship. In this competition Schankol finished eighth out of a field of America’s finost. Fine performances were turned in by all. Four men finished as All Americans; they were Jim Schankel. This is the toughest league in the nation and Cal Poly made a strong showing. They finished th out of a field of 10. Rick Hausor. Paul Draper. Lindon Crow, and Gregg Kelly all contributed to the strong nucleus of this team. 6? For First Time in CIVA 63 64 1. Determination. 2. The opponent—UCLA. 3. Anything for the team. The Cal poly Men's Volleyball team entered into It's first year of play in the SCIVA, Southern California Intercollegiate Volloyball Association, and received respect as a top team. Tho Cal Poly women are all set and ready to go- 66 TREAD WATER 67 Women Netters 7 68 The Cal Poly Women's Volleyball team has had its first winning season this year. They had a fantastic toam and a lot of ef- fort was put forth by every member. This year no one was recruited for the team but next year promises to be a real troat for women’s volleyball fans due to the fact that some more top players were recruited for tho '79-80 season. 1. ( Organizations Organizations Organi zations Organizations Organizations Ag Business Management Club IftUE Alpha Phi Sorority offers a balance of scholastic, social and service ac- tivities to its members. These include get togethers with other fraternities and sororities, retreats and projects to raise money for cardiac aid. The Agricultural Business Manage- ment Club is comprised of students with an interest in farm related businesses. Their activities are both social and business oriented in nature. Club activities include four concessions at Poly Royal and Homecoming Rodeos. Alpha Phi American Society of Engineering Technology The ASET sponsors soveral difforont activities throughout tho school year. These activities include both social and vocational orientated programs. The club is a very am- bitious, and fast growing club with very dedicated officers and members. Alpha Psi Omega National Dramatics Fraternity is involved with ovory Cal Poly Theater produc- tion. They provide assistance backstage, house managers, refreshments or actors for each show. The members occasionally produce a production of their own for public enjoyment. 75 American Society of Mechanical Engineers The ArcE Association is the departmental spon- sored club affiliated with the ArcE Department in the School of Architec- ture and Environmental Design. The Association actively participates in departmental affairs hav- ing co-ordinated the Fall 1979 accreditation visit by the Engineering Coun- cil on Professional Development. Architectural Engineering’ Association Associated Students Craft Center INFORMATION TOOL CHECK O Music Board of Control Incorporated T Student Community Services 79 CHESS CLUB Caissa Chess Club The Chess Club provides opportunities for formal and informal competition. The Chess Team is defending champion of the Central Coast Chess League, made up of teams from surrounding communities. This year the team par- ticipated for the first time in the Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Cham- pionship and compiled a 3-4-1 record against colleges and universities from all parts of the country. I California Parks and Recreation Society CPRS The purpose of the California Park and Recreation Society is to promote the interest of parks and recreation on campus. CPRS provides information to students who are interested in related careers by bringing professionals to the students and through involvement in various activities. 81 National Agri- Marketing Association NAMA The National Agri-Marketing Association on cam- pus is the largest of its kind in the United States. We promote education and better understanding by students interested in Ag Marketing. Sales and Public Relations. We also promote internship programs and friendship with students interested in pursuing this area for employment as well as promoting scholarships and personal development. 1 i 83 Cal Poly Gymnastics Club Human Development and Education Council Cal Poly Gymnastics Club and Team The Club was formed five years ago to allow non-competitive gymnasts to get involved. Wo perform at half-time shows, parades, do outdoor exhibitions and Poly Royal. The El Rodeo Staff would like to thank the Telegram Tribune for the picture of the clowns on the facing page. Recreation Administration Club Recreation Administration The purposo of the Recroation Administration Club is to provide rocreation related activities and other social functions for students majoring in Recreation Administration. The club's activities offer students a chance to become acquainted with co-majors and with their community. Cal Poly Rifle Team Wo are an intercollegiate competitive rifle team. We travel throughout California and Nevada represen- ting Cal Poly in various intercollegiate matches. We sponsor the California intercollegiate sectional match each year in February. 84 Cal Poly Rifle Team 8« Wesley Foundation The purpose of the Wesley Foundation, the United Methodist Campus Ministry, is to provide a community spirit of Christian fellowship for college students in the San Luis Obispo area. We explore our faith, beliefs, and in- terpersonal relationships during our weekly Sunday evening meetings as well as small groups, fun and study retreats. Recreation such as dinner- dances. rollerskating and retreats to places like Carmel round out our program. In our home away from home. Wesley becomes our family of friends. Toastmasters International The Babblin Broncos is a chapter of the Toastmasters International club.
