Dr. William A. Clemens of UC Berkeley, president of both the California Academy of Sciences and the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, keynotes the Learning Through Discovery event. Business and intfiStry teaders were among the audience members, as well as alumni, emeriti, faculty, staff and stu- dents. The 60,000 square-foot structure includes 57 laboratories used for research and teaching in the School of Natural Science and Mathematics. The facility features a marine aquarium, new laboratory facilities for holography, laser and fiber optics, as well as a physiology computer room. It is also the only uni- versity science laboratory building in California in which all of the inside air is replaced with fresh, outside air. Over 450 students, faculty, staff and alumni came to gather for the opening of the new science lab center. Special guests and speakers included (left-right), Top row: A. B. Buck Catlin, Mayor of Fullerton; Al Flores, Chair, Academic Senate; Larry Rovira, President, CSUF Alumni Association. Middle row: Milton Gordon, Presi- dent, CSUF; Chris Lowe, President, Associated Students, Inc. Front row: Anthony J. Moye, Deputy Vice Chancel- lor, Academic Resources; Gareth C.C. Chang, President, Hughes International; Kolf 0. Jayaweera, Dean, School of Natural Science and Mathematics; Arnold Miller, Or- ange County Board of Supervisors; William A. Clemens, Museum of Paleontology, UCB. Also enjoying the ceremonies with Larry Rovira (right), was Vince Fabrizio, a former AS President and now a member of the CSUF Alumni Association. Gareth C.C. Chang (left), a former member of the Alumni Board of Directors, is seen here with Terry Dickens, the very first President of the Alumni Association. m MUS DV ' McCartRy (Ie i interim presiSen! Successful bidders at the uni- versity ' s third annual A Bid of Excite- ment auction paid $1,150 and $2,500 re- spectively, to help support university pro- grams and scholarships. The more than $106,000 netted set a fund-raising record for a California State University system special event. John Wooden, former UCLA basketball coach, was the keynote speaker and signed autographs throughout the evening. Bidders perused more than 200 items in Titan Pavilion offered during the silent auction that included travel and golf packages, entertainment and restaurant packages, health club memberships, art works, gift certificates, and sports memo- rabilia. Exotic travel packages, concert and sporting event tickets, and a Good- year Blimp ride were among items fea- tured in the live auction. .z . ' 2; ' V- .. ;ii ' dafc . Trofessor for a Day brought more than 35 alumni back to campus in March to the School of Business Administration and Eco- nomics for an event sponsored jointly by the school and Alumni Relations. What was so rewarding about the day was how excited the alumni were to come back and talk with students, said Mary Ja- cobson, director of Alumni Relations. They remembered that one of the best parts of being a student was interacting with ' real world ' professionals. By coming back to campus, this was their way of continuing that relationship. Bill Feliciano of ERA Star Real Estate Center in Anaheim Hills (below) enjoyed filling in for Dr. Daniel C. Lee ' s financial management course, while Allan Gibson, executive vice president for Pacific Na- tional Bank in Santa Ana (top left) took the helm in Dr. Karin R. Harich ' s marketing class on buyer behavior. Eric Openshaw (middle left), partner-in-charge for the KPMG Peat Marwick Manufacturing Con- sulting Group, addressed two of Dr. Grady Bruce ' s marketing ' analysis classes. Seen left to right, R. Vasanwala, Tamara Reddy, Lucky Irenen, Amnelia Perez and Stacie Lockwood in Dr. Robert J. Zimmer ' s course on the principals of marketing chatted with Karon Kaelin, public affairs manager for Pacific Bell (bottom left). Before classes began, alumni met with their host professor for a briefing and be- tween classes hung out in the Dean ' s Office, exchanging greetings with favorite profs. The reunions continued at a luncheon hosted by Alumni Relations and Dean Ephraim Smith at the FuUerton Marriot. Being a fellow classmate I realize the pressures and hard work you have had to endure in order to achieve this most honored ac- complishment. In the past few years you have stud- ied, explored, grown, matured and met many objectives in your academic ca- reer. You have also contributed to the educational foundation of this institu- tion by testing concepts and theories in your class work, participating in cam- pus groups and interacting with faculty and staff members through projects or campus jobs. Throughout your academic struggles you have shown strength in discipline, dedication and achievement. It is my hope that these qualities along with your personal experiences at CSUF will aid you in your future endeavors. Again, I extend to you my sincere congratulations and hope that success fol- lows you as you strive to reach many more career and personal goals. Sincerely, Christopher A. Lowe AS President C.S.U. Cristi Clifford finished third in the conference, seventh in regionals and 34th in the nation in the all-around competition. 124 National third-place finishes by the baseball and men ' s soccer teams and the highest individual places ever by Titans in wrestling and ■ack highlighted a 1993-94 at Cal State Fullerton. For 13th-year Coach Al Mistri, it was easily the furthest the Titan soccer team had advanced in post-season play. In their third NCAA ournament, the Titans advanced the hard way, winning playoff games at Fresno State, San Diego and San Francisco — three sites where hey hadn ' t won a single game in almost a decade. Fullerton qualified for the Soccer Final Four at Davidson College in North Carolina and Dst to South Carolina, 1-0, with the Titan ' s No. 2 scorer, sophomore Matt Bradbury, on the sidelines due to too many yellow cards in the ■layoffs. Fullerton finished the year with a 16-7 record after finishing 5-2 for a share of second place in the Pacific Division of the Moun- ain Pacific Soccer Federation. Goalkeeper Mike Ammann earned third-team Ail-American status and Eddie Soto and Ken Hesse added all- egional honors. Coach Augie Garrido ' s baseball team matched soccer ' s efforts while posting a 47-16 record. It was baseball ' s eighth trip to the College orld Series in Omaha where they had posted championships in 1979 and 1984 and placed second in 1992. Fullerton won the Midwest 1 Re- jional Tournament in dramatic fashion in Stillwater, Oklahoma, beating host Oklahoma State in the title game, 6-5 in 10 innings. The Titans ost their CWS opener to Georgia Tech, 2-0, before bouncing back to eliminate defending national champion LSU, 20-6, and Florida State, 0-3. Needing two wins over Georgia Tech for a berth in the national championship game, the Titans lost a heartbreaker to the Yellow Jack- its, 3-2 in 12 innings. A 15-5 mark was good for a share of the Big West Conference championship with Nevada and Long Beach State. Five lifferent players earned AU-American status on various teams and junior outfielder Dante Powell was the 22nd player selected in profes- iional baseball ' s amateur draft, going on the first round to the San Francisco Giants. Individual stars were wrestler Laszlo Molnar and distance runner Mike Tansley. Molnar gained the Titan ' s highest ever finish ever in the ' JCAA championships when the unseeded senior placed second at 167 pounds. His points helped the Titans finish 23rd as a team with three )ther qualifiers in Ken Workman (142), Dwayne Buth (190) and Jeff Maes (126). Tansley, who won the Big West cross country championship in October in Brea, came back in May to win the Big West steeplechase in .as Cruces. He later became the first Titan to qualify for the Div. 1 national finals and placed sixth — third among American citizens — to ■vin AU-American honors at Boise, Idaho. Traditionally strong seasons were turned in by the women ' s gymnastics and softball teams. Coach Lynn Rogers guided a young women ' s gymnastics team to another Big West Conference title and a team berth in the NCAA region- als. The Titans had the 15th best qualifying score to miss the 12-team nationals, but Celeste Delia and Cristi Clifford advanced as individu- als, placing 30th and 34th, respectively, in the all-around. Coach Judi Garman rallied a slow-starting softball team to a strong finish. The Titans roared down the stretch to place third in the Big West and qualify for post-season play for the 15th time in as many tries. Seeded No. 3 in the 4-team regional at Northridge, the Titans twice beat Washington and split with the host Matadors to force a final game which they lost 0-4, to the eventual national runnersup. Fullerton had a 35-29 record and second baseman Monica Bagalayos earned second-team all-regional honors. Men ' s cross country and women ' s fencing also gave good efforts for Cal State Fullerton. Tansley led the Titan men to a second place fin- ish while Shirley Chan was selected the top female fencer in the conference. She placed 6th at regionals with Lisa Petanella as 7th. 125 Onqtwizoilof 126 Mr ' w l 4T; 127 Finance Association Board, Spring 1994 (left to right) Front Row: Wilson Her- nandez, Director of Programs; Clau- dia Funes, Co-Director of Fundraising; Raj Manek, Director of Publicity; Fawad Sunny Saif, Director of Ac- tivities; Cindy Gonzalez, Co-Director of Fundraising; Will Rehbaum, Presi- dent; Dutch Jones, Director of Cor- porate Relations; Will Chow, Histo- rian.
