Current Events Current Events Current: SEPTEMBER: Prime Time Goes Political: When TV ' s favorite fictional feminist Murphy Brown became a single mom, Vice President Dan Quayle attacked her for her lack of fam- ily values. America ' s favorite General, the now retired Norman Schwarzkopf (known to his supporters as Stormin ' Norman ) introduced his autobiography: It Doesn ' t Take a Hero. This month in medicine: the first effects of the near-nuclear melt- down in Chernobyl showed up in children down wind from the 1986 disaster. Whoopi Goldberg joins the lineup of latenight comedians who try the talk show circuit. Instead of the usual parade of people, Whoopi concentrates on an individual in- terview. August ' s Hurricane Andrew, the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history, leveled neighborhoods and left 300,000 homeless who now must pick up the pieces of their lives and move on. Victims from war-torn new na- tions Bosnia and Croatia, and Ro- mania are seeking asylum in Ger- many. The German government ex- pects at least 130,000 new refugees by the end of the year. This ethnic influx is a major factor in the rise of Neo-Nazi incidents causing prob- lems there. OCTOBER: America ' s Pastime Dominated by Foreigners?: The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Atlanta Braves in the World Series. The Iceman Cometh: A 5,300 year-old wanderer of the Stone Age has been discovered from the melt- ing Similaun glacier high in the Alps. He is known to be the world ' s most ancient intact human. Scien- tists are pleading for a chance to examine the body, and women have inquired about the possibility of bearing his child. It ' s Debatable: President George Bush, Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton, and Independent candi- date Ross Perot attacked the issues and each other during the Presi- dential Debates. NOVEMBER: Malcolm X: The other black martyr, Malcolm X, still haunts our conscience. In his latest movie, Di- rector Spike Lee turns his talents towards banishing the myth of Malcolm X as the proponent of the violent overthrow of the establish- ment. Back in the USSR: Democracy, however primitive, has come to the USSR. Now its leader is contending with the adversaries of nature, economics, and politics, and the outcome has immense implications for the rest of the world. DECEMBER: And they didn ' t live happily ever after: In a formal announce- ment made to the House of Lords, Prime Minister John Major re- vealed what the tabloids here and in England had been talking about for months: Princess Diana and Prince Charles call it quits in a formal separation. Feed the World: Operation Re- store Hope begins as US Marines land in Mogadishu to feed the starving Somalis and police the warlords who have been stealing the limited resources of this fam- ine-stricken land. You ' re Excused . . .: In a chill- ing decision made Christmas Eve, lameduck President George Bush pardoned former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger and five others previously convicted on charges in the Iran-Contra scandal. JANUARY: Been There, Done That: Star Trek enters a new orbit; this month marks the premier of the spin-off: Deep Space 9 - another en- try for trekkies. Retirement here I come: Presi- dent Bush says good-bye to a country he ' s lead for four years while newly-elected President Clinton moves into the White House with wife Hilary, daughter Chelsea, and cat Socks. Our Fair Lady: Legendary ac- tress, UNICEF spokeswomen, and Nazi Occupation survivor, Audrey Hepburn died of colon cancer at the age of 63. Blood Bath: In former Yugosla- via, ethnic cleansing is the chill- ing name given to the hostile Ser- bian movement to rid their nation of Muslims and Croatians. Three-peat: The Buffalo Bills reached Super Bowl XXIII for the third time in as many years, and disappointed Bills fans at Pasade- na ' s Rosebowl, watched them walk away, once again, without a vic- tory. FEBRUARY: Clinton ' s Opening Blunder: Pres- ident Clinton ' s first nominee for Attorney General, Zoe Baird, with- draws from consideration and ad- mits to breaking the law by hiring illegal aliens to provide child-care. We Had a Gay Old Time: As the Armed Forces protest, the public waits to see how far President Clinton will go in lifting the ban on homosexuals in the military. We Want In: HIV positive Hai- tian refugees seek asylum in Amer- ica. Entrance into the US is denied to them by the Coast Guard and President Clinton. Summoning Sacrifice: In his first State of the Union address, Presi- dent Clinton begins to define shared sacrifice and calls on Americans to ' donate ' (meaning higher taxes). rent Events Current Events Current Events snowy Friday afternoon, a massive explosion rocked the foundation of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. Rent it on Video: Oscars ' theme, The Year of the Woman, was ironic as once again few films offered much for or by women. Major awards were as follows: Best Sup- porting Actress: Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Yinny); Best Supporting Ac- tor: Gene Hackman (Unforgiven): Best Actress: Emma Thompson (Howards End); Best Actor: Al Pacino (Scent of a Woman); Best Director: Clint Eastwood (Unfor- given); Best Picture: Unforgiven. Kung Fu deja vu: Brandon Lee, 28 year-old son of the late martial arts star Bruce Lee, was killed in a freak accident while filming The Crow. Ya Say You Want a Revolution . . . : Boris Yeltsin makes a bold step by calling for a nation-wide referendum to replace the current Parliament that was appointed while communism still reigned in the USSR. Also up for consider- ation is the replacement of their constitution. Disney announced the opening of a new professional Hockey team and arena: The Anaheim Ducks who will play at The Pond, a multi-use facility Vi mile east of Anaheim Stadium. APRIL: The Jury is in: After 40 hours of deliberation in Rodney King ' s Fed- eral Civil Rights trial, the jury came up with a split verdict: Police officers Koon and Powell were found guilty of infringing on King ' s civil rights; rookie officer Wind was acquitted early on and officer Briseno testified against Koon and Powell. Decisions were handed down nearly one year to the date from last years ' civil trial where officers were all found not guilty. That verdict caused over three days of rioting, looting, and other civil unrest. Play Ball!: The Professional Baseball League added two new teams: The Colorado Rockies (their home is Denver) and The Florida Marlins (their home is Tampa). Waco Standoff: April 19, 1993. The Terror in Waco came to an end on April 19, after a 51 day standoff ended in an explosion of flames. The cultists set fire to the com- pound in which they had been dwelling after FBI threw tear gas inside to drive them out. 86 Branch Davidians died including 17 chil- dren. Only nine escaped and did not perish within the inferno. Late Night: It was announced on April 26, that Conan O ' Brien would be the new host of Late Night as David Letterman decided to move to CBS to get the 11:30 time slot op- posite Jay Leno on NBC. Maples Surprise: Maria Maples surprised Donald Trump with news that she ' s pregnant but: Will she sign a prenatal prenup? Arkansas Tragedy: 3 young boys, each around 8 years old, were mur- dered in West Memphis, Arkansas and found in a drainage ditch 18 hours after being reported missing. Still there are no leads to the mys- tery slaying. MAY: One for the Road: Cheers says so long- The last ever Cheers show said goodbye on May 20. The 98 minute show included the marriage of Rebecca Howe to a guest-star- ring plumber and the return of old waitress Diane Chambers. Celebrity Stalkers on the Loose: Tennis star Monica Seles was stabbed at a tennis match; Actress Andrea Evans was pursued by a mental patient; and Kathleen Krueger, the wife of Texas Senator Bob Krueger, was terrorized for 9 years. The Battle for Baby Jessica: The birth mother wanted Jessica back and the court ruled in her favor. So Long Joe: Ex-49er ' s quarter- back Joe Montana says so long to San Francisco and hello as he flies off to the Kansas City Chiefs along with ex-Raider Marcus Allen. JUNE: Hit or Miss: Arnold Schwarzenegger ' s 70 million dollar movie Last Action Hero proved to be a BIG miss this summer while Steven Spielberg ' s 65 million dollar Jurassic Park proved to be a HU- MONGOUS hit while only in the third week had grossed 171.10 mil- lion dollars. Custody Battle: Woody Allen lost custody battle with Mia Farrow for kids Dylan (7), Moses (15), and Satchel (5). Pepsi Scare: There were 50 re- ports in 23 different states of Pepsi containers being contaminated with syringes. It all began in Tacoma, Washington and ended with 13 arrests and 3 others claim they fabricated stories. Hockey Mania: The L.A. Kings took the lead by winning the first game of the finals but could not beat the Montreal Canadiens, los- ing the next four games. 3-PEAT 3-PEAT!: For the third year in a row, the championship Chicago Bulls pulled off yet an- other NBA Finals win, this time over the Phoenix Suns and Charles Barkley. Nixon Tragedy: At the age of 81, former First Lady Pat Nixon died of lung cancer on June 22. She was buried at Nixon Library on June 26. Dodger Men: Roy Campanella (71), once a Dodger catcher and Hall of Famer, died June 26 from a heart-attack. Also the tragedy of a heart-attack, former pitcher and announcer Don Drysdale was taken from us. Wacky Wedding Pair: Actress Julia Roberts married country- western singer Lyle Lovett in Mar- ion, Indiana on June 27th. Sickness in Navajo: A baffling illness has taken 11 lives on a Na- vajo reservation. Some say it could be related to a virus found in ro- dents?
