America ' s favorite General, the now retired Norman Schwarzkopf (known to his supporters as Stormin ' Norman ) introduced his autobiography: It Doesn ' t Take a Hero. This month in medicine: the first effects of the near-nuclear melt- down in Chernobyl showed up in children down wind from the 1986 disaster. Whoopi Goldberg joins the lineup of latenight comedians who try the talk show circuit. Instead of the usual parade of people, Whoopi concentrates on an individual in- terview. August ' s Hurricane Andrew, the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history, leveled neighborhoods and left 300,000 homeless who now must pick up the pieces of their lives and move on. Victims from war-torn new na- tions Bosnia and Croatia, and Ro- mania are seeking asylum in Ger- many. The German government ex- pects at least 130,000 new refugees by the end of the year. This ethnic influx is a major factor in the rise of Neo-Nazi incidents causing prob- lems there. OCTOBER: America ' s Pastime Dominated by Foreigners?: The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Atlanta Braves in the World Series. The Iceman Cometh: A 5,300 year-old wanderer of the Stone Age has been discovered from the melt- ing Similaun glacier high in the Alps. He is known to be the world ' s most ancient intact human. Scien- tists are pleading for a chance to examine the body, and women have inquired about the possibility of bearing his child. It ' s Debatable: President George Bush, Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton, and Independent candi- date Ross Perot attacked the issues and each other during the Presi- dential Debates. NOVEMBER: Malcolm X: The other black martyr, Malcolm X, still haunts our conscience. In his latest movie, Di- rector Spike Lee turns his talents towards banishing the myth of Malcolm X as the proponent of the violent overthrow of the establish- ment. Back in the USSR: Democracy, however primitive, has come to the USSR. Now its leader is contending with the adversaries of nature, economics, and politics, and the outcome has immense implications for the rest of the world. DECEMBER: And they didn ' t live happily ever after: In a formal announce- ment made to the House of Lords, Prime Minister John Major re- vealed what the tabloids here and in England had been talking about for months: Princess Diana and Prince Charles call it quits in a formal separation. Feed the World: Operation Re- store Hope begins as US Marines land in Mogadishu to feed the starving Somalis and police the warlords who have been stealing the limited resources of this fam- ine-stricken land. You ' re Excused . . .: In a chill- ing decision made Christmas Eve, lameduck President George Bush pardoned former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger and five others previously convicted on charges in the Iran-Contra scandal. JANUARY: Been There, Done That: Star Trek enters a new orbit; this month marks the premier of the spin-off: Deep Space 9 - another en- try for trekkies. Retirement here I come: Presi- dent Bush says good-bye to a country he ' s lead for four years while newly-elected President Clinton moves into the White House with wife Hilary, daughter Chelsea, and cat Socks. Our Fair Lady: Legendary ac- tress, UNICEF spokeswomen, and Nazi Occupation survivor, Audrey Hepburn died of colon cancer at the age of 63. Blood Bath: In former Yugosla- via, ethnic cleansing is the chill- ing name given to the hostile Ser- bian movement to rid their nation of Muslims and Croatians. Three-peat: The Buffalo Bills reached Super Bowl XXIII for the third time in as many years, and disappointed Bills fans at Pasade- na ' s Rosebowl, watched them walk away, once again, without a vic- tory. FEBRUARY: Clinton ' s Opening Blunder: Pres- ident Clinton ' s first nominee for Attorney General, Zoe Baird, with- draws from consideration and ad- mits to breaking the law by hiring illegal aliens to provide child-care. We Had a Gay Old Time: As the Armed Forces protest, the public waits to see how far President Clinton will go in lifting the ban on homosexuals in the military. We Want In: HIV positive Hai- tian refugees seek asylum in Amer- ica. Entrance into the US is denied to them by the Coast Guard and President Clinton. Summoning Sacrifice: In his first State of the Union address, Presi- dent Clinton begins to define shared sacrifice and calls on Americans to ' donate ' (meaning higher taxes).
