Campus Scenery Titans ' 93 CSUF Students In Action Whether in class, in the University Center, or on the campus enjoying the scenery, CSUF students are unique. Below: (1-r) Dan Alexander sits on the wall and converses with fellow student Clint Hay. Right: While the library is certainly qui- eter, the University Center ' s chairs are more comfortable. Right: Many students find the University Center has all the comforts of home as a place to study between classes. Campus Life Left: The Titan Pub is another favorite gathering place for friends. Below: Reviewing that last couple of pages before a class, this student finds a quiet corner on campus. Above: For a quick appointment on cam- pus, students find parking in 30 minute lot off of Nutwood a great solution. jbove: Waiting for class to begin Above: Students run into friends and classmates on the lawn. Campus Life A bird ' s-eye-view from the new U.C. reveals students between classes just after the first rain. On her way to the Coffee shop this student rushes to get her cup quickly so she ' s not late to the first day of classes. Homecoming 1993 Fall Celebrations A Twister competition? A Dunk tank? The Blue Bonnets in concert? What ' s going on? They were all part of the activities planned for Home- coming Week ' 92 at CSUF. The Twister competition and the dunk tank were part of the lunchtime ac- tivities offered Monday through Thursday, October 5-8 to encourage students to participate in Homecom- ing Week. Homecoming activities continued into the evening on October 8th with The Blue Bonnets, an all-female quintet, featuring guitarist Kathy Valentine, ex-GoGo ' s bass player, when they played at the Titan Pub. The crowd in the Pub seemed recep- tive to The Blue Bonnets ' brand of alternative, rock, and blues. This year the Deans hosted the annual pre-game Tailgate party and sent invitations to the 800 graduates of the class 1967 for a 25th reunion. Food was provided by alumni Brian Fairley ' s Brian ' s Barbeque, but many people did the traditional pic- nic routine. A post-game party was offered at the Fullerton Hofbrau. Topping a difficult week for the Titan football team with the Oct. 1st resignation of longtime coach Gene Murphy and the threatened elimina- tion of the entire football program, was the game loss of 49-3 to San Jose State. .eft: The 1992 Homecoming Court: (1-r) Jueen Alison Curion, Associated Stu- lents; King Paige Griffin, Sigma Pi; 1st Junner-up Renee Manchester, Alpha )elta Pi. Always ready for brotherhood these SAE ' s enjoy the pregame tailgating party as they get ready to root the Titans to a victory. Never short of a party these fans enjoy what seems to be the last tailgating party for a while. These Snow Terrorists are look- ing forward to a good game, but to an even better snow season. Camper and coolers ready these tailgators take great pride in the Cal State Fullerton football squad. k 1 r, 10 Opening Band members are here to support the team as well, this horn player shows his true colors. Gordon The President ' s Investiture Below: Professor Soraya Coley from the department of Human Development and Community Services walks in the Processional. For only the fourth time in the history of California State University, Fullerton, a Pres- ident has been named and invested. This sol- emn celebration, held on Commencement Lawn, took precedent over classes, which were cancelled, allowing all students and fac- ulty the opportunity to see California State University Chancellor Barry Munitz invest Milton A. Gordon with the authority and re- sponsibility of the office of the President. Gordon, having already served two years, was certainly aware of those duties. Also a part of the investiture was the awarding of an honorary doctorate given posthumously to Don Karcher. The fourth re- cipient of this honor, Karcher, who passed away May 19, was known for his involvement in the university including many fundraising efforts. Marring the celebration was a silent pro- test of a very small group protesting the ex- penditure of $25,000 for the investiture. But once again money became the issue and not the stu- dents. Fall of 1992 brought the end to Ful- lerton football due to even more financial diffi- culties. Other programs may have benefited but students, players, alumni, and the commu- nity have all lost out. With the loss of the foot- ball team, more concentration was given to the other sporting teams. The rest of the athletic programs all worked harder and started to re- ceive the support they all deserved. Right- Coach Gene Murphy took advantage of the state ' s golden handshake and took early retirement at the conclusion of the 1992 season. Murphy carne to Fullerton in 1980 and built the program into a championship mode (1983 and 1984) before budget cuts and overzealous scheduling produced three consecutive losing seasons. Top: First quarter action at Titan Sta- dium on Sept. 5 as Cal State Fullerton hosts Cal State Northridge in the inaugu- ral football game in the new facility. Above: Quarterback Trendell Williams races into the end zone with the first Ti- tan touchdown in Titan Stadium. It tied the game with CSUN, 7-7, and Fullerton went on to win 28-7. Right: Running back Arthur Davis and a would-be tackier exchange blows to the face mask in 1992 football action. Football It was definitely a season filled with highs and lows for the CSUF iFootball program. For coach Gene Murphy though, the roller coaster Bride that has become synonymous with Titan Football came to an end rafter the 1992 season. During his thirteen year coaching span at Ful- I lerton, Murphy has seen a lot of growth and change occur amid scru- I tiny and many losses. With a final record of 2-9, the program bid farewell to CSUF. But I even in this low, Murphy accomplished a milestone achievement. In I the opening ga me of the season, the new stadium was christened with !la 28-7 win over CSUN. It was events such as that that brought over 8,200 fans through the 1992 season. However with a power start like that, the Titans couldn ' t pull off a winning season. In their final home game the Titans lead off with a strong start but had a tough finish, falling to Utah State. As they ap- proached the final game of the season, they tried to pull off maybe just one more win for their coach but their attempt failed against the UNLV Runnin ' Rebels in a score of 33-16. So although Coach Murphy did not end his tenure with a win, he did leave behind many milestones, thus the end of the Titan Football program and Gene Murphy ' s roller coaster ride in Fullerton. His abil- ity and many services will be greatly missed. Above: The Titans appear excited and ready to take the field against CSUN. Volleyball Above: No. 6 Rachel Wittliff goes for the dump over her opponents block as her teammates set up for defense. HMH i Right: Mary Ellen Murchison, Women ' s Volleyball Coach, is only in her second year with Fullerton ' s program and is hoping for a better season next year. •%J ££ , Far Right: Outside Hitter Lisa Parbst was voted All- freshmen and was also selected to second-team All-BWC. M i 96 The Cal State Fullerton Girl ' s Volleyball Program is still in the works. Two years ago, under threats of suspension, and a 10 year plan to fully establish gender quality, the Woman ' s Volleyball pro- ' gram resumed under the new coaching of Mary Ellen Murchison. Due to the threat of suspension the nucleus of the team went else- where and for the past two years, the team has been in a battle to stay alive in its conference. The team ' s record, 1-27, showed how much the team is in need of some perking up. They tied for ninth place in their conference and are hoping for brighter skies in the future. Freshmen standout, Out- side Hitter, Lisa Parbst was voted All-freshmen and also Second- team All-BWC. Coach Murchison took over the crumbling program and hopefully she will be able to pull the program out of its slump in the near future. Below: Heidi Robertson, 13, gets herself and her teammates pumped up after her kill brings her team closer to winning the match. 97 Top: Guard Aaron Sunderland sets up the offense to run the play. Above: Senior Bruce Bowen takes one of his final jump- shots in one of his last games of the season. Above Right: Coach Brad Holland and four ironmen seniors led the Titans to a successful 15-12 season. From left: Aaron Sun- derland, Kim Kemp, Coach Holland, Sean Williams, and Bruce Bowen. 98 Under the coaching of new headman Brad Holland, the Titans had a great ' 92- ' 93 season. In fact, in their 11th game of the season, the men had their best conference record (7-4) ■ since 1982. This kind of record though is not surprising when you look at the team ' s four starting seniors. These four men have put countless hours of hard work and intensity on and off the court. Coach Holland expected a ' great deal from all of his players, and from them was gracefully met. Each of the starters made their way to the top this season by aver- aging in double figures throughout the entire season. Bowen was the team ' s top scorer in 10 of IS ■ games. The team was led in field goal percent age at .560 (70 of 125) by senior Kim Kemp. In dividually, the players made career highs this season. Williams ' made his first three-poim shot at the buzzer to win over UNLV. With ' their strong dedication and a fierce desire t( win, it ' s easy to see why the Titans had such ; successful season. Men ' s Basketball WOMEN ' S Although the Cal-State Fullerton Women ' s Basketball team didn ' t show it in their final stats (8-19), the eleven Lady Titans had a sea- son filled with winning spirit. Visible all over campus and especially in the Physical Education building, these women personified Titan pride. Led in scoring by Allison Jackson, Shefonda Colbert, Heidi James and S. Bradshaw, the Lady Titans toughed out the difficult season and tried to remain focused. With a total of 518 points and an average of 19.2 points per game, Jackson was by far, the shining star among the Titans. In fact, the closest scorer to her was Bradshaw at 315 points total, and a per game average of 11.7. This year the Titans were going for their |;third national title but were stopped in Austin, Texas, where they fin- Iished third in the regional tournament. This was a big year though for Coach Augie Garrido as he became only the tenth Division 1 coach ito register 1,000 victories when the Titans beat San Jose State, 12-1, Ion May 7. In his 18th season at Fullerton and 25th overall, Garrido jagain had his team in the national Top Ten rankings. The Titans placed second in their conference, bested by Long Beach State at home on April 16-18 to lose the BWC title. The team finished 7-8 to fall from No. 2 to No. 11 in the national polls. At the regionals, Fullerton beat Maine and McNeese but fell to the Trojans twice. Various team members including Powell, Ricabal, Millan, Carr, Parisi and Banks won various Ail-American awards for their efforts. Powell made 2nd team Baseball America and Team USA. Way to go Titans! Hopefully next years team will enjoy as much success as years past teams. Below: The crowd watches on from Titan Stadium as Fullerton defends its ranking in their conference. Below: Coach Judi Garman became the nation ' s first coach to win 900 games on the col- lege level (includes 211 victories at Golden West J.C.). The Titan Softball Team finished in a tie for first this year which goes to show what a crazy season the team had this year. The team fell out of the national rankings for the first time in program history but won 21 of their last 24 games to gain NCAA field. It was an unfor- gettable year for coach Judi Garman as she won her 900th game of her career. A strong finish gave the team a share of the BWC championship and qualified them for NCAA championship competition. They got a tough regional draw, losing in two games to defending national cham- pion and eventual 1993 runner-up UCLA. Many Titans also received awards for their excellent playing abili- ties. Among them, shortstop Denise DeWalt was BWC Field Player of the Year and also qualified for 3rd team NSCA and 1st team CoSIDA Academic Ail-American. Next year the lady Titans will be on the hunt for 1st place and will be looking forward to face those nasty Bruins. Well, for this program, the hard work and dis- cipline finally paid off. The Titan Wrestling team sent eight members to Nationals and came back with three National Champions. But the largest accom- plishment came in the smaller package! 118 lb Senior Michael Grubbs came back from Nationals in Aimes, Iowa an Ail-American Wrestler. Grubbs was definitely a leader on and off the mat: he was one of this season ' s team captains and named CSUF ' s Big West male selection for Scholar-Athlete, with a 3.77 gpa as a Finance major. This wrestler not only achieved Asgari ' s goal, but took it past it ' s limit. Above: Strength and skill are definitely the underlying principles of a good wrestler, as displayed by Lazlo Molhar. .107. WOMEN ' S GYMNASTICS For coach Lynn Rogers, Cal-State Fullerton Gymnastic ' s program is one of the most successful in near history. For the past 17 years, Rog- ers built and sustained a strong program. This year, however, proved to be a landmark with his 200th team win (Jan. 8 vs. Stanford) as head coach. But, Rogers was not the only strength of this year ' s team. In fact, if it wasn ' t for assistant coaches Julie Goewey Garcia, Tim Garrison, and Taunia Rogers ' remarkable skill and enthusiasm, this year ' s team wouldn ' t have made it as far as they did. Proving that age and experience aren ' t everything, Juniors Celeste Delia and Karina Mills held the seniority on the team which also in- cluded five freshmen and one sophomore. These women used their strength, determination, and grace to reach the top: the Big West Conference championship held this year in the Titan Gym. Celeste Delia also had a personal triumph: winning the Gymnast of the Year the second season in a row. Below left: Coach Lynn Rogers urges his team on to the Big West Conference champion- ship. Both teams ad 6-1 records in conference and the Titans were 12-6 overall. The entire 1993 lineup will return for next years season led by for- ' ards Eddie Soto and Rick Rodriguez as well as goalie Mike Ammann. oto made All-America, second team as well as First-team All-MPSF Pacific Division. Also making First-team was Ken Hesse. Second-team honors went to Ammann, McDonnell, Brown, and Rodriguez. Due to last year ' s playoff loss at Washington in OT, the Titan ' s were denied an NCAA bid. The long-awaited Titan Sports Com- plex was placed into full operation, three veteran coaches passed significant milestone and the university became a leader in imple- menting gender equity in intercollegiate athletics. The $14 million multi-venue athletics facility played host to on-campus football and soccer in the multi-purpose stadium and show- cased a nationally prominent baseball program in an intimate, spectator oriented baseball stadium. An all-weather running track, renovated tennis courts and improvements to the existing Softball Complex also were part of the project, which was constructed through a unique partnership among the Marriott Hotel, the city of Fullerton and the university. Traditional successes in baseball, softball and women ' s gymnastics continued. Augie Garrido became only the tenth Division I base- ball coach to register 1,000 victories when the Titans beat San Jose State, 12-1, on May 7. In his 18th season at Fullerton and 25th overall, Garrido again had his team in the national Top Ten rankings. The Titans ' bid for a third national title was stopped in Austin, Texas, when they finished third in the regional tournament. Softball coach Judi Garman became the nation ' s first coach to win 900 games on the college level (includes 211 victories at Golden West Junior College) when the Titans beat UNLV on May 7. A strong finish gave the Titans a share of the Big West Conference cham- pionship and qualified them for NCAA championship competition. They got a tough regional draw, losing in two games at defending national champion and eventual 1993 runnerup UCLA. Women ' s gymnastics Coach Lynn Rogers, like Garman the only head coach his sport has known at Cal State Fullerton surpassed the 200-victory barrier (on Jan. 8 vs. Stanford) on his way to Big West Conference Coach of the Year honors. His young team peaked to win the Big West championship meet in Titan Gym and junior Celeste Delia won Gymnast of the Year honors for the second season in a row. Soccer coach Al Mistri enjoyed the best season of his 12-year tenure as the Titans and UCLA shared the inaugural championship of the new Mountain Pacific Soccer Federation with 6-1 records. Mistri returns his entire lineup for 1993 led by Ail-American forward Eddie Soto and standout goalie Mike Ammann. A 10-year plan to fully establish gender equity was set in motion as the women ' s volleyball program resumed after threats of its suspension. Failing to survive for 1993-94 was football, which could no longer afford to play at the Division I-A level despite the new but still relatively small stadium. Plans are in place to resume football in 1994 at a lower division on a cost containment basis. The 1992 Titans christened the new stadium with a 28-7 win over Cal State Northridge on Sept. 5 but won only one more game the rest of the season. Coach Gene Murphy retired after 13 seasons to take advantage of the state ' s early retirement program. He later resur- faced as the replacement for legendary Hal Sherbeck at nearby Fullerton College. Individuals sparkled in several sports, both on and off the competitive fields. Prominent were wrestler Michael Grubbs and Delia, who combined athletic stardom with academic achievement. Grubbs repeated as Cal State Fullerton ' s Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The 118-pounder placed fifth at the NCAA champion- ships to win All-America honors. He was selected to the American Wrestling Coaches Association academic All-America team after winning similar honors in the Pac-10. He also was a third team pick to the GTE CoSIDA at-large Academic All-American team. Delia was the Female Scholar Athlete of the Year while winning the all-around title at the Big West championships in Titan Gym. A fall on the floor exercise at regionals denied her a shot at the national championships. Another outstanding individual was softball shortstop Denise DeWalt. The senior from Bakersfield repeated as Big West Confer- ence Field Player of the Year while leading the league in hitting at .427. She also was selected to two All-America teams — first team GTE CoSIDA Academic All-America and third team by the coaches association. Ou tfielder Dante Powell, second baseman Jeremy Carr and pitcher Dan Ricabal won various All-American honors in baseball and Powell played during the summer for Team USA. Ful- lerton had a pair of male running champions in cross country titlist Mike Tansley and 5,000-meter king Steve Frisone. Possibly the most memorable moment of the athletic year came in Titan Gym on March 6. In the final home men ' s basketball game of the year, the Titans beat nationally ranked UNLV, 84-83, on a last-second shot by senior point guard Aaron Sunderland. Fans stormed the floor and carried senior forward Kim Kemp off the court on their shoulders. It was only the fourth win over the Rebels for Fullerton in 33 tries and the first for rookie coach Brad Holland, who bested the veteran Rollie Massimino. .112 u ISA. W jerland. Fans iet ' ' One of the limitations of being a student at Cal State Fullerton is the fact that it is a com- muter school, thus not allowing for the atmo- sphere of a traditional college campus. But for all of its shortcomings CSUF does al- low to allow each student an opportunity of in- volvement to achieve a more traditional college experience. From social sororities and fraterni- ties to each of our academic societies, the oppor- tunity is there for all students to make their college life a little closer to what they had ex- pected. Baranger was the Key- note Speaker at the Alumni Reception during Comm Week. The theme for the 15th annual Com- munications Week (held April 27-30) Op- portunity Knocks! proved to be true on more than one level. For students inter- ested in communications but undecided on a major, Comm Week was an opportu- nity to experience various areas in the communications field such as public rela- tions, advertising, journalism, radio TV film, and speech communications. For un- derclassmen who ' ve decided on a major, Comm Week offered opportunities to hear specialized topics such as Creative Ad- vertising and Copywriting and Control of Public Air Waves — Necessary or First Amendment Infringement. For students near graduation, opportunities abounded with panel discussions about graduate school and a chance to meet professionals in the field. And for professors and pro- fessionals in the workplace, Comm Week offered a chance to meet with peers and to discuss various issues confronting this area of our society. Focusing on the challenges facing stu- dents as they prepare for and enter the professional workplace, Comm Week is planned executed and implemented by a team of students from both the Depart- ment of Speech Communication. Serving as a prototype for similar programs at other universities across the nation, Comm Week has be commended by the U.S. Congress, the White House, and many local governing bodies. Two special events, the Brockriede Dis- tinguished Lecture Series and the Alumni Reception, acknowledged work in the communications field. Dr. Bruce E. Gron- beck, an associate professor of Communi- cation Studies at the University of Iowa, was recognized for his impressive re- search and service record in the commu- nications field. Dr. Gronbeck lectured on Electronic Rhetoric: The Remaking of American Presidential Campaigns. Walt Baranger, a 1986 CSUF alumni in commu- nications, gave the Keynote Speech at the Alumni Reception. Student Leadership One of the benefits of an education from CSCIF is the opportunity to experience, ex- periment and participate, and one of the ways some students are doing that is through student leadership. The Univer- sity Activities Center offers students a chance to improve their leadership skills while serving the various organizations on campus. One of the great experience offered is the trip to Idyllwild. Leaders from the orga- nizations on campus are taken to a local mountain camp and offer activities and workshops for team building and skill re- fining. To honor those students dedicated to student leadership, a reception is held at the end of each semester. Family and friends are invited as well as the Vice Pres- ident of Student Affairs. To be honored students worked on 3 different certificates requiring up to 20 hours of workshops each. At the Spring Reception, May 20, 1993, over 100 students were honored for completing these certificates. Her interpersonal style, sensitivity and enthusiasm for inspiring learning are some of the attributes that made Linda a special and popular professor of nursing. Dr. McKeever was dedicated to her students both inside and outside the class- room spending countless hours helping students. The knowledge that her door was al- ways open was an invaluable source of strength and support for her students. It was because of these qualities that she was awarded posthumously the 1993 Distinguished Faculty Student Service Award by the CSUF Alumni Association. Linda McKeever passed away in February this year. He joined CSUF in 1969 as a professor of psychology and was named dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences in 1981. After serving as dean for 11 years, Dr. Schweitzer was appointed vice president of academic affairs in May of 1992. Dr. Schweitzer was the author of numerous articles and papers in the field of psy- chology, education, speech and behavioral sciences. Among his many interests was in- creasing the international aspects of the educational experience for Cal State Ful- lerton students. He helped establish the university ' s London Semester program, cre- ated a Pacific Rim studies program and nurtured the Japanese language program. Don had a reputation for being one of the most decent, honest and humane men on campus. He led by personal example rather than by dictate. Magic was his passion. Perhaps that is why Don was able to master the trick of being both boss and friend to the faculty and staff. Don A. Schweitzer passed away on June 11, 1993, however he left his mark on Cal State Fullerton in numerous ways. He will not be forgotten but he will be greatly missed. 135 Tina Marie Adelizi.
