He helped lead his team to the 1992 College World Series, where the team won an impressive 5 games, before being defeated, in the sixth game by the Pepperdine Waves. Nevin earned the Most Outstanding Player Honor at the tournament and the Most Valuable Player Honor in the Conference. Nevin became the first round draft pick to the Houston Astros and the 1992 College Baseball Player of the Year earned a spot on the 1992 U.S. Summer Olympics Baseball team bound for Barcelona, Spain. 21 On May 4, Kevin Costner returned to his alma mater to be honored by the CSUF Alumni Association as the 1992 Distinguished Alumnus. Accompanied by his wife Cindy ( ' 81 Biological Science), Kevin spent the day at a student open forum, a private reception and the dedication of the new baseball field at the Titan Sports Complex. At the open forum in the new Titan Pavilion, Costner spent 90 minutes speaking to over 1800 students and fielding their questions. Later, at a private reception hosted by the Alumni Association and President Gordon, Kevin was presented with the Distinguished Alumnus Award by Alumni Association president Mike Weiss. The day ' s events concluded with Kevin dedicating the new baseball field by throwing out the first ball. Costner was then presented with a Titan baseball jersey by Coach Augie Garrido and made the 10th man on the team. All in all, it was a day Cal State FuUerton will never forget. 22 ■ YEAR IN Russian President Boris Yeltsin stood by and helped make sure the country survived the Coup that tool place. Mikhail Gorbachev fled the country during the coup, returned, and finally ended his tenure as leader. l 24 REVIEW t President continued with his Presidential duties and at- tempted to make Peace in world and help fight the recession in the U.S. The Group 7 Summit held at the Tower of London brought together seven of the world ' s powerful leaders for discus- sions on economics. 25 • YEAR IN Paula Abdul has been all over the charts in the recent years. The former Laker cheerleader hit the charts with her album, Spellbound . Here she per- forms during the MTV awards. 28 year old, Michael Jordan, of the Chicago Bulls lead his team to the NBA championships in 1991. Here he plays against the Houston Rockets. Tlifrock: lllSlillll 1 tliaris, B( 26 REVIEW ' 91 The rock band, Guns n Roses, started the new year with a bang. The release of their albums Use your Illusion I and 11 rose the group to the top of the charts. Both sold millions in minutes of arrival. Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger was a big hit in the highly successful film Terminator 2: Judgment Day The 90 million dollar film grossed more than 150 million at the box office. REVIEW ' 91 27 YEAR IN Thousands of Iraqis were killed by the U.S. and its allies after Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. His army retreated from Kuwait, leaving the country in sham- bles, but the leader remained in power. The Iraqi invasion caused the destruction of millions of dollars in property. B HI BI I ■1 B K r ' • , ' m 4 - V H H HO; ' !|. 1 28 REVIEW ' 91 REVIEW The retirement of Justice Thurgood Marshall of the Supreme Court caused President Bush to nominate another person to the high court. Anita Hill, a professor and former co-worker of Thomas ' , alleged to have been sexually assaulted by the Supreme Court nominee. Hearings were held and her testimony failed to dismiss Mr. Thomas. 43 year old, Clarence Thomas was confirmed by the U.S. Senate to replace Marshall on the Supreme Court. Thomas remained well .supported throughout the ordeal and won his seat in a 52-48 vote. REVIKW ■«! 29 PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE To the Class of 1992: It is my pleasure to extend congratulations to you for having successfully compleled your degree objectives this year at California Slate University, Fullerton. You should be proud of your hard work, dedication and accomplishments that have brought you to this point in your life journey. I am certain that just as you have left your mark on Cal Stale Fullerton you will do so in all your future endeavors. You have had the opportunity to attend a university with a quality faculty thai is commilled to leaching a diverse student body.
