You have learned that education is a lifelong process and not just an introduction to a career. As you join the ranks of the almost 90,000 alumni of Cal State Fullerton, I hope that the knowledge and skills you have gained here will enrich your life and bring further rewards to you and to society. You are encouraged to remain in close contact with us and to assume a leadership role on campus and in the community as an active alumnus. I look forward to hearing about your future successes and to welcoming you as an active alumni participant in the life of Cal State Fullerton. Sincerely, ' 9p . iJt7Z Milton A. Gordon President 19 Year In After serving a sentence of 28 years in a South African prison, Nelson Mandela is released with world-wide attention. Mandela traveled all over the world on a peace mission and here he waves his fist in the air to represent freedom. This Irish-born singer stirred up a lot of controversy by not allowing the Ameri- can National Anthem to be played at her concert. Sinead O ' Connor ' s 1 single Nothing Compares 2 U , written by Prince, received critical acclaim. She also became one of the first stars to re- fuse a music award. rftere Mi oW, i in em 30 Review 91 ipilotol tus loll- There she is, Miss America. Marjorie Judith Vincent, Miss Illinois, is a 25 year old, third year law student a Duke Uni- versity with aspirations of becoming an international lawyer. In October, President George Bush no- minated David Souter to the Supreme Court. Souter, 51 years old, was de- scribed as a classic conservative with great revenue for the Constitution and the law . Here he answers questions following his nomination. 21 Year In One of the few good men wito stood out during the Savings and Loan scandal was William Seidman. He worked hard to correct all of the problems that were caused. Unfortunately he had the re- sponsibility of paying all the people who lost money, resulting in millions of dollars lost. ' Janet Jackson ' s Rhythm Nation 1814 topped the charts in 1990 and 1991. She began as an actress on the tv series, Good Times and now has gained in- ternational fame. Last summer, Ms. Jackson embarked on a 5 continent con- cert tour and still reigns supreme in America. riiei 23 Review ' 91 (V sfflH mer, Ws. r ie police in Florida considered their album As Nasty as they Wanna Be obscene, and a record store owner was arrested for selling it. That didn ' t stop the 2-Live Crew from continued perfor- mances. lim Henson was a puppeteer with an enormous following. He created a men- agerie of creatures including Big Bird, the Cookie Monster, Bert and Ernie and that infamous couple, Kermit and Miss Piggy. Mr. Henson died of pneumonia on May 16th 1990 at the age of 53. 33 Year In ! 9 Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev realized the need for reforms in the country. With the people in the midst of a critical economic condition, he de- cided to make a change. The only prob- lem is that the Communist Party and the government can ' t agree on how to do it. Actress-Singer- ' Material Girl , Ma- donna has again stirred up controversy. MTV banned her Justify My Love video because of it ' s strong sexual con- tent. The critically acclaimed concert rockumentary film Truth or Dare was released to limited engagements and her Immaculate Collection stayed at the top of the charts for weeks. ifoirt 2A Review 91 ifl fonff ' ' Of Ca« Nolan Ryan has set as many as 40 major league records. He ' s had the most no hitters, most one hitters, and most stri- keouts. He continues to play the game even as he approaches 45 years of age. 34 year old, 49er ' s Quarterback, foe Montana signed a 4 year, 13 million dol- lar contract. The ' greatest quarterback in the history of football ' will be the highest paid QB in football history. 25 Year In MC Hammer ' s U Can ' t Touch This was at 1 for many weeks. His long awaited concert tour brought out many loyal fans and he wowed them. Germany finally became united on October 3, 1991. The Berlin wall came down with a mass of media attention and the people lived freer lives. 26 Review BI Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait and started a whole fury around the world. The United States was put to war and he faced a strong defeat. Thousands of Americans went to Saudi Arabia to fight for the US. For months. Desert Storm was on the minds of millions. 27 Year In The people in the Soviet Union suffered a serious depression. Food was very scarce. People died and their inflation rose. Hours after the invasion, Arabs from all over the world took to the streets in anti-Iraq demonstrations. Change occurred in Eastern Europe as well. Communism no longer ruled that part of the world. Candles and flowers pay tribute to the protestors killed 20 years ago. s. fix: 2 sL .i x ' - .kK 29 I Review ' 91 Cal State Fullerton Alum, Kevin Costner proved that anyone can make their dreams come true. His ' ' Dances With Wolves , which won a very impressive seven Academy Awards, became a criti- cal, as well as a blockbuster hit. Of the seven Oscars the film received, Mr. Costner earned the title of Best Direc- tor. He truly is an inspiration. 39 Congratulations 1991 CSUF graduates. After a long and arduous process, you have earned your degree and join over 76,000 other CSUF alumni who represent our univer- sity throughout the world. Since our first graduating class in 1960, Cal State Fullerton ' s reputation has grown tre- mendously. This is due in large part to the success of its alumni. Your success in the coming years will further enhance that reputation as you move into your chosen fields of interest. Your degrees have also earned you the opportunity to become members of the CSUF Alumni Association. In addition to allowing you to maintain close ties with the University and your fellow graduates, membership gives you the chance to assist future students and make a posi- tive contribution to our university. Continued affiliation with CSUF can be a rewarding experience. During these times of economic hardship, only those campuses with the suppo rt of its alumni will continue to grow and pros- per. We are confident that we can count on your support in the coming years. Again, congratulations and best wishes in your future en- deavors. As you look back on your years at Cal State Fullerton, I hope your memories and dreams will bring you closer to our university.
