HIGH........61 EDITORS: DEANN DRUMMOND KRISTIN KEMPTAR HOMECOMING Homecoming week was full of activities. Students and faculty participated in spirit week by dressing as their favorite story book character and in Hawaiian clothing. The tradition pod decorating continued this year. The Seniors took first place with their “Alf” pod. The Junior’s took second place. To conclude the weeks activities, the 1988 Home- coming coronation and dance was held in the gym. Former King Terry Nitsch and Queen Dana Spiehs were in attendance to crown the new royalty. Bill Baasch and Heather Simdorn became the new King and Queen. The crown bearers were Ashli Leth and Brandon Kluthe. The honor guards Jennifer Bell, Jas- on Simdorn, Julie Stutzman and Wes Wellensiek. Robe-bearers were Monica Hargens and Todd Nitsch. Angela McDonald provided background music while coronation hostesses Seanna Kissler and Carla Merritt presided over the coronation ceremonies. Following the coronation was the Homecoming dance. Crown-bearers: Ashli Leth Brandon Kluthe THE CROWNING 2 You can tell everyone likes slow dancing by the smiles on their faces!! The royalty is lined up and ready to go. Heather and Bill enjoy the first dance. THE ROYALTY 3 LUMBERJACKS AND “Lumberjacks and Weddingbelles” was a full scale musical-the first to be presented at Centura for over 15 years. The plot was based on the fact that lonely lumberjacks in America’s early northwest ter- ritories were in dire need of female compa- nions. Asa Mercer, the aspiring lawyer, goes back to Boston to bring back the weddingbelles. The happy situation is sabotaged by the evil Mayor Crook and the horrible Scrubbs family. Music, singing, dancing, comedy, and mystery combined to hold the attention of the audience. Nearly 800 people attended the mu- sical held in the elementary gym. The Scrubbs Family in harmony?! 4 WEDDINGBELLES The boys do a bit of cleaning up before the belles arrive. The belles and lumberjacks sing a song to get aquainted. Led by majorette Wanda Stienike and preceded by the queen candidate Heather Simdorn, the band mar- ched to a victory. Not only did the band take the Class C trophy, they also were named the best band in Classes C and D. For this, they were awarded the traveling trophy. The band director, Charles Wellensiek, had this to say: “After 14 years of practice, we finally got it right.” Harvest of Harmo- ny was a success for the Centurions! Fashions made in Home Ec. classes, prom dresses and gar- ments loaned from the Closet, Maurices, Brass Buckle and Younkers were presented. FFA boys assisted and also modeled. Door prizes from florists and local shops featured intermission interest. The traditional can- dlelight installation of new FHA officers and chapter mothers followed the show. There was a large crowd and the evening was an enjoyable activity for Centura FHA. JR. - SR. PROM 1988 GUEST SPEAKER: Rev. Our team played excellent football all season, but always seemed to get a bad break at the most inopportune time. This was the type of season which was a character builder for the team. One finds out a lot about young people when in situations such as this, and as a coach, one gains a lot of respect for young men who never give up and al- ways work. Very few if any of these young people will become professional football players, but each and everyone will take what they have learned and be able to apply it to some of the tough games in life. DISTRICT RUNNER-UP The 1987 season was a time of change for the Centura volleyball team. Adjustments had to be made on the court due to heavy losses to graduation. Consequently, inexperi- ence coupled with a change in coaching staff resulted in a slow start for the Lady Centu- rions. The team did not fare well at the con- ference tournament as they met up with their old foe, Burwell, in the first round. Shortly after conference, however, the team really came together. They came back in the tournaments and avenged two regular season losses to reach the district finals be- fore falling to Burwell once again. The junior varsity squad under coach Nich- ols finished the season with a record of 4-5, while the freshman squad was 5-4. Both the boys and girls teams were very competitive and among the best Class C teams in the state. The teams brought home 6 trophies and averaged five medals per meet. Both teams were district runners-up, and qualified for the state meet. At the state meet the boys finished second by just two points and the girls were eighth. State medal winners were Drew-3rd and Shawn-12th. The seniors will be missed next year for their leadership and hard work. They include: Shawn, Brian, Doug, and Scott. But with 9 boys and 7 girls returning we look forward to another successful year. State Runners-Up All in step! Tod anticipating the takedown. It was an outstanding year for Centura wrestling. Dave Baasch, Bill Baasch, and Tod Brandt qualified for the state tournament. Bill became Centura’s third state champion and Dave took the sixth place medal. Other highlights included three finalists in the Conference meet, eight medal winners, including five finalists in the Centura meet, and a total of fifty-one medals earned for the year. Add to that a new varsity and reserve pin record of ninety-five pins in a season and the year totals up as being a fine one in deed. Certainly one of the brightest points of the season was Bill Baasch’s perfect 27-0 season. Bill pinned nine- teen of his opponents along the way and never gave up a single back point during the year. Other wrestlers such as seniors Rusty Lamberson, Will Kemptar, Tod Brandt, and Doug Meyer did a fine job of leadership, while younger wrestlers such as Dave Baasch, Brian Meyer, and Bob Morse began to show promise for future successful seasons. All in all, the 87-88 season was one of successes in the present and a taste of what might be to come. Bill, the undefeated wrestler. The Centurions made their 1st State Tourna- ment appearance in the schools history, ending their season in a very hard fought game to the even- tual State Champion Team from Gibbon. The ladies finished with a impressive record of 19-4 with three of the four losses to State Cham- pion teams Gibbon and Ord. The fourth loss went to Loup City in the semifinals of the conference tournament. The JV’s gained valuable experience ending the year 5-7 and the Freshmen finished 3-1. In the Ravenna Holiday Tournament, the Centurions upset the host Bluejays, enroute to a second place finish in the tournament. In January, Centura notched nice victories over Lou- Platte conference foes Burwell and Gibbon — both wins coming on last second shots. Gibbon and Burwell went on to finish first and second in the conference tourna- ment. Another highlight of the season was a mid-January win over state qualifier, Broken Bow. In the L.P. Conference Tournament, Centura beat St. Paul the first night, before losing to Wood River in the second round. Coach Olsen said the team gained valuable experi- ence, which will help the team in the 1988-89 campaign. Centura final record was 7-12. Rockin’ Randy is ready. We canoed from the river bridge to Dannebrog where we had a barbecue. Delta Epsilon Phi, the National German Honor Soci- ety, held their initiation on Wednesday, May 18. We had the largest group of inductees since our chapter was founded. Drummond, and the Elementary Princi- pal, Glenn M. Blake, decided to move on to other things. Drummond leaves Centura after twelve years at the helm. Blake finishes thirteen years as Elementary Principal, having overseen the move from the three towns into the new elemen- tary facility. Both men mark that event, the com- pletion of the new facility as a bright spot of their time at Centura. Jr. Sr. High Principal David G. Karr will be returning for another year. He says he feels 1987- 88 was a good year for Centura and cited the es- tablishment of the Junior and Senior High Prin- cipal’s Student Advisory Committees as a high- light for him. ADMINISTRATORS: Dave Karr; High School Principal, Dean Drummond; Super- intendent, Glenn Blake; Elementary Principal. 46 FACULTY Our faithful scorekeepers. MY TROPHIES!!!
