BOYS’ BASKETBALL After having their difficulties in the first half of the season, the Centura boys basketball team came on strong in February, to win the Lou-Platte conference tournament, and put together a seven-game winning streak to close out the regular season. The conference tournament offered new life to the Centurions, and the team took advantage of the opportuni- ty. For the third time in the tournament, Centura had downed foes, such as: Adam Central, Wood River, and Rav- enna, that had earlier beaten them. Following the tourna- ment, Coach Olsen commented, “It was a very rewarding championship, because we had to work hard to improve. I think our improvement showed.” After having a record of 4 wins and 7 losses at one point, the team ended up with a record of 11 wins and 8 iosses. It was a successful season. Three players received post season honors. Terry Nitsch, Darin Jantzi, and Rob Hargens were all voted to the Lou-Platte All- Conference team. Terry also was named to the Grand Island Indepen- dent All-Area Class C first team, and the Omaha World Herald Honorable Mention All-State team. Darin was se- lected as All-Area Class C second team, and Rob to the All- Area Class C Honorable Mention squad. SR. HIGH TRACK TEAM The Centura track team consisted of 46 members, and had a terrific season. The girls won 3 meets, placed 3rd in Con- ference, 3rd in District, and 7th in State. The boys were 7th in Conference and 3rd in District. There were 9 State qualifiers. Plac- ing in the state meet were Denise Trum- ler, Lori Anderson, Verdean Melch, Con- nie Lauritsen lrst in the 400 meter relay 51.65 (undefeated throughout the sea- son). Jana Hochstetler 4th in the high jump 5’0“; Denise Trumler 2nd in the long jump 17’5 l 4”(school record); Drew Drummond 4th in the 3200 meter run 10:03.58. Other state qualifiers were: Teresa Oseka in the disc, Curt Baldwin in the 800 and 400 meter run, and Rusty Lamberson in the pole vault. Lord, help me get through the day! Stretch a little farther.
