CENTURION 1987 CENTURA PUBLIC SCHOOL CAIRO, NE CONTENTS EVENTS .. 2 ATHLETICS .. 15 ORGANIZATIONS ... 29 STAFF .. 45 SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN .. .. 51 JR. HIGH ... 61 EDITOR: COLLEEN NIELSEN HOMECOMING The Homecoming Celebration started Tuesday, November 30th, as the halls were filled with stripes and shades. Wednesday was designated as “I Want to Be a Cowboy” day. The festivities proceeded to Thursday with the attire of burgundy and white. Spirit days con- cluded on Friday with Dress-up Day. Along with these activities, the pods were decorated with each class as- signed a different pod. Prizes were awarded to the clas- ses that had the most participation during spirit days and in pod decoration. In both cases, the Seniors took first. That night the volleyball team whipped Loup City despite the Raiders’ attempts. Also, the football team pulled off another win in spite of Mother Nature’s tac- tics. Saturday evening, October 4th, the 1986 Home- coming dance was held. Dana Spiehs and Terry Nitsch were crowned by former royalty, Jennifer Reynolds and Dave Bell. First Runners-up were Vanessa Melch and Kyle Caspersen. Second Runners-up were Melissa Bel- lamy and Steve Setsodi. Other candidates included Hali Lockhart, Denise Trumler, Rob Hargens, and Darin Jantzi. Heather Myers and James Hoke were crown bearers. Robe bearers were Heather Simdorn and Bill Baasch. Rehear- sals for The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg” were held after school. The other three plays were rehearsed in Drama Class. They were “Good-Bye to the Clown”, “A Game”, and “Baby”. Performances included both comedy and drama. “The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg” is a satire of a town that considered itself “incorruptible” and found that it was mistaken. “Good-Bye to the Clown” deals with a little girl who has created an imaginary clown to take the place of her father who has died. “A Game” begins as a simple experiment in game playing between three innocent and unsus- pecting participants. Soon the effects of greed and possessiveness cause the game to become re- ality. “Baby” is a somewhat outrageous comedy in which the world is viewed through the eyes of a baby. The theater was full both nights, and audi- ences indicated their appreciation. The Centurions ended the season with 2 wins and 6 losses. The positive side of the season has to be the ex- perience that the underclassmen gained. It will go a long way toward making the next couple of years suc- cessful for Centura Football. Also on the positive side were the attitudes of the players. The seniors provid- ed good examples with their leadership. The work, effort, and sacrifices that they made will remain a part of Centura for years to come. The underclass- men also played an important part in the team this year and their attitudes were also greatly appreciat- ed. Four Centurions were named to the Louplatte All-Conference Football team: defensive end Rob Hargens, offensive guard Bill Baasch, joined by kick- er Kyle Casperson and punter Darin Jantzi. Box 972 Grand Island, Nebraska 68802 WRESTLING An aggressive style and good hard work paid off for the Centura wrestling team this year as the Centurions captured trophies at four meets and qualified Jeff Dubbs, Bill Baasch and Dave Baasch for the State tournament. These three wrestlers, as well as the rest of the team, seemed to consistently improve from week to week and to develop their skills very well as the year progressed. From the hours of jumping rope to the “joy” of circuit training and the ever-present motivational tapes, the wrestlers took on a look and attitude all their own. This attitude, combined with the hard work paid off where it counted - on the mat. The team of twen- ty-one wrestlers had thirteen young men with winning records. “Some of the kids came away really hungry for next year,” Coach Coe said. “The kids know now what it takes to be successful in the sport. These are good people, and they have given the wrest- lers who will follow them something good to try to surpass.” Jeff Dubbs, Dave Baasch, Bill Baasch Jeff. Dave, and Jeff receive their medals. The leadership of three seniors: Hali Lockhart, Missy Bellamy and Wendi Hadenfeldt helped make the 1986-87 basketball team enjoy a very successful 17-4 season. Together the team enjoyed many highlights during the season such as Conference Co-Champs, Conference Run- ners-up, Direct Runners-up and beating Loup City for the third time. Several disappointments were losing to Gibbon in the conference championship and losing to Battle Creek which ended Centura’s hopes for a state berth in the district fi- nals. The conference tournament offered new life to the Centurions, and the team took advantage of the opportuni- ty. For the third time in the tournament, Centura had downed foes, such as: Adam Central, Wood River, and Rav- enna, that had earlier beaten them. Following the tourna- ment, Coach Olsen commented, “It was a very rewarding championship, because we had to work hard to improve. I think our improvement showed.” After having a record of 4 wins and 7 losses at one point, the team ended up with a record of 11 wins and 8 iosses. It was a successful season. Three players received post season honors. Terry Nitsch, Darin Jantzi, and Rob Hargens were all voted to the Lou-Platte All- Conference team. Terry also was named to the Grand Island Indepen- dent All-Area Class C first team, and the Omaha World Herald Honorable Mention All-State team. Darin was se- lected as All-Area Class C second team, and Rob to the All- Area Class C Honorable Mention squad. At the St. Paul Marching Contest, the band placed first in the field marching event. Then on Octo- ber 4th, the band performed in the Annual Harvest of Harmony Parade in Grand Island. After the marching season, the band played at numerous basketball games to raise spirit. Also during this time of the year, the band performed two concerts for the public audience to attend. An added bonus for the public was the Con- ference Band concert consisting of 25 Centurions. In April, the band and several small groups traveled to Kearney for the District Music Contest. The overall operation of the school is super- vised by Superintendent Dean Drummond. His main concern is to continue to maintain an out- standing educational program in the face of de- clining financial resources. Day-to-day operation of the schools is in the hands of the two principals, Glenn Blake for the Elementary and David Karr for the Jr. Sr. High. In addition to providing teachers with what they need to perform their jobs and managing stu- dents, both principals have been busy this year with updating curriculum guides and implemen- ting changes developed through the North Cen- tral Study last spring.
