Since the first day we walked through the big double doors of Centura they have played an important part in our lives. Here at Centura, we are rather fortunate - our small school provides many opportunities to make friends. Looking back at the countless memories, occupies alot of the Seniors moments. Like the ballgames where we stood in the rain to cheer on our team, the final exams we crammed for together, the class meetings we spent screaming at each other, and the long phone conversations we spent discuss- ing everything from Saturday nights to Monday mornings. Some of the friend- ships we have made here, while growing up, have strengthened, while others have faded with time. Despite this, we will always have the memories of these special years - cherished momentos of days gone by. On Thursday students sported burgandy and white, and spirit days came to a close with dress up day. That night the volleyball team lost to Doniphan despite the determined efforts of the Lady Centurions. Later that evening, the fans experienced another heartbreaker as Centura fell to the Cardinals in double overtime. The following evening, the 1984 Homecoming dance was held. Carl Kinkade and Michele Trumler were crowned by former King and Queen, Kerry Sheeks and Ronda Bowden. First and second runners up were Ron Brockman and Brenda Busboom; and Rick Bell and Tammy Poehler. Dave Bell and Tracie Williams were robe bearers; crown bearers were J. J. Casperson and Anya Trumler. Following coronation, Centura students danced to music played by Knights of the Turntable. High School girls from across the state competed for the honor of reigning over the forty- third annual parade that included many floats and over one hundred bands. The candidates spent the day in a series of interviews and special activities, but many of Friday evening’s events had to be cancelled because of the heavy rain. By Saturday morning the rain diminished to a light drizzle and the parade began on schedule. Michele led the march- ing Centurions along the parade route, through downtown Grand Island. 16 SWEETHEART DANCE FHASTYLE SHOW King .................... Steve Lemburg Queen ................... In 1985 many new ideas were introduced. In March the Student Council held a Centura- Wood River dance, in an attempt to form better relations with other schools. In April “Students Against Driving Drunk” (SADD), was in- troduced, and Rick, Joel, Denise and Michele spoke to an assembly, explaining the program to the students. The council also started a scholarship fund by donating $5,000 in hopes of providing more financial help for college-bound seniors. They finished the year with the election of new officers and an installation dinner at the Interstate Holiday Inn. In spite of the cool day the turn out was good. The Chapter had a record membership, with 36 members for the school year. President Kelli Obermiller initiated a new club project with the adoption of a Foster Child from Haiti. Club members will be corresponding with 8 year old Kettlaire Elie from Galette Roche Blanche, Haiti and providing for some of his daily living needs through the club’s donation. State FBLA convention was one of the year’s highlights with George Fieldgrove winning an honorable mention in the Business Systems and Procedures Contest and Brenda Hadenfeldt winning 1st Place in the Clerk-Typist I contest and an Honorable Mention in Spelling. Brenda will represent Nebraska in the Clerk-Typist I contest at the National FBLA Convention in Houston, Texas in July. This group set as a goal the establishing of an FFA Alumni Officers. An excellent slate of officers were elected. As the year progressed, the FFA members won at every major contest they entered. In November, eleven members went to Kansas City to the National FFA Convention. Then in April, they competed in the State Convention in Lincoln. Jack Reimers and Marty Hargens received the highest award given by the State FFA Association. It was the State Farmer degree. In addition to the regular work of writing speeches, prepar- ing scripts, and rehearsing, we hosted the conference contest during a regular school day. Everything proceeded smoothly, and we won the second place trophy. District competition was held at Burwell. Due to redistricting, the team faced tougher competition than ever before. In close scoring, decided only in the last round of competition, Centura placed third, close behind Atkinson West Holt and North Loup Scotia who tied for first. GERMAN STUDENTS This year Centura students experienced a first. We have a partner school in the Viktoria-Luise Gymnasium of Hameln Ger- many. Twenty four students and two sponsors spent one month in our school, homes, and lives. At first we were unsure of what to expect, but when the month was up, we realized that the time passed much too quickly. Thirteen of our students and Herr Olsen will in turn visit their school, leaving May 28 and returning June 26. It is our hope that through this exchange we can develop a better understanding of our fellow man, and they of us. The 1984 Volleyball season was a year for rebuilding. The Centura Varsity Squad returned only one starter. Several sophomores saw a lot of Varsity action which will benefit next year’s team. The Varsity and JV teams also experienced running a new offense this year. The Varsity team ended the season with a 3-10 record. The JV record was 4-5, and the Freshman’s record was 1-5. Six of the Varsity’s losses were to two state-runner ups and one state-rated team. The Varsity letter winners were Seniors: Jody Veeder, Brenda Bus- boom, Kelli Obermiller, and Libby Heckman; Juniors: Jenny Reynolds, and Stephanie Schumacher; So- phomores: Hali Lockhart, Missy Bel- lamy, and Denise Trumler. The Centurions had 3 athletes chosen to the All Conference team. Jenny Reynolds, and Missy Bellamy were selected to second team; and Jody Veeder received Honorable Mention. The squad consisted of 15 boys and 8 girls, which was the largest Cross Country team in the history of Centura High. For the boys Terry Nitsch led the squad by winning medals at Gibbon, Kearney, Ravenna, Broken Bow, Conference, and District. Terry also won both of the Triangular meets we ran this fall. Other medal winners include; Joel McDowell, Gibbon and Kearney, and Roger Obermiller - Kearney, Varsity runners also includ- ed Doran Stienike, Curt Baldwin, Doug Brown, Ron Brockman, and Steve Setsodi. The girls team was led by Twyla Hartman who medaled at Gibbon and Kearney Catholic. Other medal winners were Michele Trumler, Dawn Werre, and Connie Lauritsen, who all medaled at Kearney Catholic. Varsity runners included Tammy Poehler, Sharon McGown, Lori Breiner, and Christian Nielsen. The highlight of the season for both the girls and the boys came at the end of the season. We attributed the greater number of losses to the overall talent and balance of teams played. Four of our opponents qualified for the state tournament. In the season opener we lost a close battle to powerhouse Wood River 56-59, but rebounded back to win the next three consecutive games. Late in the season we suffered six consecutive losses all of which were state and area rated teams. The teams were Kearney Catholic, Ord, Loup City, and last to Ravenna in the first round of districts for the third straight loss to them. The Junior Varsity team finished the season with a 8 and 4 record. The freshmen had a 3 and 2 record. The Centurions were up against a murderous schedule and inexperience. Despite all this, the team finished in a tie for second place in the conference, and won a sub-district champion- ship. Coach Olson commented, “We had a number of players who teamed up to make our inside game respectable. I was pleased we were able to win our last 5 out of 7 games because the kids worked hard all season, even though things got rough at times.” Rick and Dave Bell received All-Conference, All-Area, and All- State honorable mention. Dave was the leading scorer in the conference with an average of 18.1 points per game. The Junior Varsity team had a good season, and finished with a record of 8 and 5. The freshmen were 0 and 5. With the economy in a slump and increases in the cost of education, balancing a school budget has been a big challenge. In addition, there has been a steadily increasing demand for improvement of the quality of education for today’s students. In keeping with these trends, Centura’s superintendent has been busy keeping in touch with current legislation, serving on a task force for education, and maintaining open communication with patrons of the district. These efforts have been instrumental in maintaining the traditional quality of Centura Schools. The elementary principal is Mr. Glenn Blake. Mr. Blake has seen many changes in the elementary school system. He is a very capable principal and is quick to give a student a smile or a “Hi”. This year he took on another responsibility when he became the wrestling head coach. Under Mr. Blake’s guidance and the help of the elementary staff, the elementary school has constantly improved. In addition to his usual duties as Centura’s Jr. Sr. high school principal, Dave Karr has been involved in some new activities this year. He has spent many hours instructing staff members in computer literacy, as well as being “on-call” for computer trouble-shooting. In an effort to improve teaching techniques he has helped initiate a system of “Instructional Theory Into Practice” by taking six hours of college coursework, helping organize an in-service workshop, and helping arrange for a weekly class from Kearney College for the staff. In preparation for next year’s North Central Accreditation, Mr. Karr serves on the steering committee and has initiated curriculum development procedures for the Jr. Sr. High.
