CENTURION 1984 CENTURA PUBLIC SCHOOL, CAIRO, NE CO-EDITORS: RONDA BOWDEN, BARB BRASE Senior reflections Remember how it used to be? Remember when we ... ?” Laughter! Yeahl I do ... we sure did some crazy things when we were frosh ... how about our sophomore year ... well, don’t forget our junior year ... but then there is this year, our big senior year! Now what?” The senior year is one of realization, knowing there is no next year, no new buddies, no new teachers to harass. The high school days are a limited quantity. As each day passes, the seniors realize this will be their last Homecoming ... last basketball game ... last yearbook ... last track meet. LAST DAY OF SCHOOLI Some may wait for that day with utter joy, and others will wait in ominous sadness. Today we prepare for our dreams of tomorrow One of the senior's biggest worries is the uncertainty of his or her plans after high school. For the college-bound student. the headaches accumulate as dead- lines for college applications and scholarship information approach. Meanwhile, those upperclassmen that decide not to attend a post-secondary school are busily preparing themselves for entering the work-world. Regardless of future prospects, each senior has graduation details to attend to in addition to everyday demands in academics and extra-curricular activities. 6 Jerald Hurt Scott Kissler Tim Lewandowski Bob McDonald Isa (Vogel) Mostek Aaron McDowell Corey Myers Class Colors: Burgundy And Silver Sue Mingus Marilyn Oseka Tracie Pfeifle 7 You want me? Seniors will even miss bandl Go ahead, make my dayl 9 What graduation means In response to the query, What does graduation mean to you?”, these answers were received from seniors: Graduation represents our accom- plishments in high school. It also represents the beginning of the rest of our lives and forces us to make important future plans and to become independent.” — Dave Breiner. The end of some old friends, the beginning of some new friends. ” — Kris Welty It means that my high school career will be over and my career as a part of keeping this world going will start.” — Bob McDonald It means that I finally get out of high school and go on with my life to do whatever I want to. To leave home and friends for a while and explore the outside world.” — John Stokes Graduation is a meaningless cer- emony used to display the people who made it through.” — Aaron McDowell I feel that graduation is a sense or a feeling that we’ve made it. I am happy to graduate also. I really don’t know how well I’ll do in college. — Rod Tyma Graduation means starting a whole new life. Being able to take responsibilities (as in college). Not having someone there to guide you. Your making your own decisions.” — Bill Johnson Perhaps we will never know what the answers are until we are really out there, and find out for ourselves what graduation really means. Yesterday Activities Total Eclipse Student and Teacher enthusiasm filled the air as Monday. September 26th, kicked off Spirit Week’s activities in preparation for Centura's Homecoming, 1983. Monday’s attire included shorts, sweats, T-shirts and hats. Tuesday was designated Punk Day, or for those more conservative, 50’s day. Dress up day followed with seniors going to extremes with long formals and three-piece suits. Thursday was confusing for everyone as Backwards” or Future” Day found people coming (or were they going?) to school wearing clothes backwards, guys dressing as girls and vice versa. Also roaming the halls were mommies, old men and military officers. On Friday everyone expressed their school spirit by wearing burgundy and white. Friday also included a pep rally and announcement of the winners of FHA’s King of the Legs” contest. Mr. Hermance took first place in the teacher’s division and Jerry Wooden was first runner-up. Dave Bell became King of the Legs . That night the volleyball team lost a heart breaking game to the Burwell Longhorns, but spirits were lifted as the whistle blew the fourth quarter to an end, and the football team won with a victorious 38-0 score. Saturday moFning Centura's march- ing band played in the Harvest of Harmony Parade in grand Island. Lisa Trumler, Centura’s Queen candidate, rode on the Queen’s Court Float as the second runner-up. Later that evening, the annual Homecoming Dance began with the coronation of King, Kerry Sheeks and Queen, Ronda Bowden. Joey Grabowski and Stacey Schumacher, the former King and Queen, returned to crown them. First Runners-up were Lisa Trumler and Scott Franssen. Second runners-up were Barb Brase and Bob McDonald. Other candidates included Pat Baldwin, Kris Welty. Bill Johnson and Corey Myers. Rick Bell and Michelle Trumler were Robe Bearersi Holly Nelson and Nathan Wilhelm were crown bearers. Bobbi Meyer and Dave Bell were sophomore attendants and junior attendants were Brenda Busboom and Ken Gallagher. The coronation was over, and the Royal Court danced to the theme song, Total Eclipse of the Heart , which was played by Sights and Sounds Sensation”. High school girls from across the state competed for the honor of reigning over the fourty- second annual parade that includ- ed more than one hundred bands. The candidates spent the entire day in a series of interviews and activities which culminated in the selection of the queen at a pageant that evening. The girls were judged by a panel on a number of criteria including school and community involvement, beauty, poise, and intelligence. Lisa was selected as second runner-up to the Harvest of Harmony Queen. On Saturday, October I, Lisa joined the queen and first runner-up on the royal float to reign over the festivities and lead the parade through downtown Grand Island. 16 Lisa Trumler, Queen Candidate Sweetheart Dance Freshmen Attendants — Carrie Poehler. A loss to Central Catholic for the first game of the season was certainly a down, but it got the team fired up as they set out to win their next three consecutive games. From there on, it seemed that the only team to stand in their way were Wood River and Burwell. A District Championship took the gals to Regionals, where for the third time, they faced Burwell. This final loss ended the season on a low note, but things didn't look so bad if it was kept in mind that the Lady Centurions were only a step away from State. Coach Olsen commented, After our first round loss in the conference tournament on a Monday we had II days before our next ballgame. The players put forth a super effort in practice and really worked hard. From that point on. we won our last 5 out of 7 games, only losing to St. Cecilia, and Bayard, at state. In Districts, the team beat Fullerton in the first round to set up a rematch with a very deliberate Ravenna team. The Centurions won by a score of 37-36. The Centurions played Rock County for the Regional Playoff. The game went 3 overtimes until the Centurions won 66-63. The season culminated with a chance to play in the Nebraska State Basketball Tournament — Centura's first trip to state. The team played well against the number one seeded team, Bayard, but ended up losing 41-48. Coach Olsen, said. The players' hard work, defense, and teamwork helped us improve and have a strong team at the end of the season. Winning districts and regionals was a fitting reward for the team. Rick Bell and Corey Myers received first team All-Conference recognition and Dave Bell received honorable mention. The Junior Varsity team finished the season with a 6 and 4 record. The team won four trophies this season, the most ever in a season. They were first places at the Gibbon and Kearney Catholic Quads and second place finishes at the Minden and Shelton Invites. The seniors on this year's team will be greatly missed. They are: Jerald Hurt - 155 , Rod Tyma - 145 Bob NcDonald -138 . Mike Brown -167 , Scott Franssen - 185 and Randy Suntych - 126 . Returning lettermen are: Jeff Dubbs, Jeff Cuddie, Willie Gottlob, Marc Vieth, Danny Williams and Harry Grim. Other wrestlers were Doran Stienike. Tim Lewandowski, David Breiner, and Devin Brundage. All of the returning wrestlers are freshmen and sophomores. There is a fair group of eighth graders coming up. The seniors are to be commended for their fine leadership and attitudes toward winning and wrestling. A special thanks goes out to Steve Hulme for his assistance during the wrestling season. His help and work with the wrestlers was greatly appreciated by the wrestlers and Coach Meyer. 55 Cross Country The boys were young and the girls were few.
