OUR YEAR OF SUCCESS CENTURA HIGH SCHOOL EDITOR: DONNA MCDONALD Seniors The seniors have been looking forward to finishing their last year in school, some with happiness and anticipation and some with sadness and apprehension. This whole process started 3 years ago with the last change and maturity demanded for incoming sophomores. They had to choose a course of study for the future and once the choice was made, they excelled in their academic endeavors. As Seniors this year, they showed leadership and strength both academically and athletically. They will be leaving a good impression on Centura Public School. The 42 seniors have invest- ed 13 years in their educations and many plan to continue with college or trade schools. The changes that started 3 years ago will happen again this year with the choices being made for the post-graduate plans. We wish them all the success in the world. Each day, the students dressed up in different ways. Monday was Hair Day, Tuesday was Dress-up Day, and Wednes- day was Sweats and Picket Day. On Thursday, Inside-out day, and on Friday, everyone got into the school spirit by wearing burgandy and white. A contest was held to see who could decorate their assigned area the best. The Eighth graders got first for decorating the gym. The Freshmen got second for their decorations in the lunchroom. The Seventh graders got third for decorating the hallways. In the Senior High division, the Sophomores won first place for the 200 pod area. The Seniors came in second for doing the administration pod. The Juniors were third for the 300 pod area. The winners were announced at a special pep rally held on Friday, where everyone really got into the Homecoming Spirit. Then, on Saturday night, the Homecoming Dance was held. The Homecoming royalty were Stacey Schumacher as Queen, and Joey Grabowski as King. The runners up were 1st - Pat Neville and Steve Oseka, 2nd - Pam Neville and Mark VanPelt, and Brad Powers, Mike McMindes, Donna McDon- ald and Barb Kauk. Welty 15 Sweetheart dance The annual Sweetheart Dance was held in the Jr. Sr. High Gymnasium for the first time this year. Another break with tradition was that the crowning of honor court was held before the dance began. The girls in the court are chosen from F.H.A. members who have earned a percentage of Encounter points for their involvement in worthwhile F.H.A. Activities. If a girl has been a member of the court, she is not eligible again the next year, except for the honor of being chosen queen. Members of F.H.A. vote on the court. With the newly organized F.F.A. this year, F.H.A. is proud to have escorts chosen from another vocational club. F.F.A. members voted on the boys in their chapter to be an honor court member for each grade. The runner up for queen has the honor of being mistress of ceremonies for the evening. This year the honor was Cheryl Teston’s. The Queen was Cindy Hetfield and King was Todd Harders. Junior attendants were Robin Evans and Corey Myers. Sophomore attendants were Paula Powers and Marty Hargens. Freshmen attendants were Jaci Perkins and Lee Hostetler. They were crowned by last year’s Queen and King, Peg Zentz and Brent Bolander. They were crowned in front of a rainbow backdrop. The theme, “Just You and I”, was on a heart at the back of the dance floor. The music group, Perfect Harmony, provided music for the dance. Annie Oakley, played by Carmen Jantzi, challenged Frank’s shooting reputation and captured his heart in this humorous story of a stormy romance. Only three seniors were on the squad of 43 who ended the season. The lack of experience and a number of injuries took their toll on the young team. The squad started the year with a great deal of enthusiasm and spirit only to face the toughest schedule ever played by a Centura football team. The competition included Class C state ranked Sandy Creek, Gibbon, Ravenna, Stromsburg and two Class B schools, St. Paul and Wood River. The positive side of the season has to be the experience that the underclassmen gained. It will go a long way toward making the next couple of years successful for Centura football. Also on the positive side were the attitudes of the players. Particularly the three seniors: John Bellamy, Joe Grabowski, and Steve Oseka. These three seniors provided good examples with their leadership. Both on and off the field they set the type of example for the younger players that anyone connected to Centura could be proud of. The work, effort, and sacrifices that they made will remain a part of Centura for years to come. They will be greatly missed. The underclassmen also played an important part in the team this year and their attitudes will be greatly appreciated in the years to come. Brad won the first meet of the year at Gibbon and Joel McDowell placed 14th. Mike Duester didn’t get over his leg injury until the districts where he placed 6th and qualified for State. Brad Powers placed seventh and the team came in fourth which was one place away from qualifying for State. Craig Welty and Doran Stienike were the other Cross Country Team members. Three of the four are seniors. The Girls’ Team led by return- ing letter winners, Sue Mingus and Barb Brase, provided leadership for new members, Michele Trumler, Kristal Gable, and Carmen Jantzi. Each girl tried to do their best in each meet. Next year, the exper- iences of this year will be of great benefit. BACK ROW: Brad Powers, Craig Welty, Mike Duester. Champs JENSEN’S STORE Boelus, Ne 68820 Conference Champs For the second season in a row the Centura basketball team won both the regular season conference championship and conference tournament. The season started out on a good note, the team beat Wood River on December 3 by a score of 47-26. The team picked up some big wins early, beating Grand Island Central Catholic in overtime, and winning the Palmer Holiday Tournament. Consistently the Centurions were “up” for conference foes. The team’s LouPlatte conference record was 6-0. Late in January Centura beat Gibbon by two points on a pair of free throws by Corey Myers with no time left on the clock. In another key conference match-up, Centura beat Ravenna 58-50 on good team play and the hard working defense of Brad Powers and Rick Bell. In the L-P tournament the Centurions won over Gibbon and Ravenna. In the finals Centura was led by Brad Powers and Casey Setsodi. The season ended in a disappointing way for our team. In the district Semifinals, Ravenna employed a stall game plan from the opening tip-off. Centura led 6-4 at half and 10-6 after three quarters. The teams traded baskets and with 2:45 left in the game Centura led 12-8. In the final 2 Vt minutes Ravenna started shooting and scoring. Regulation ended with the score 15-15. After two overtimes Ravenna came out on top 19-18. Centura finished the season with a record of 16 wins 4 losses. Mike McMindes and Brad Powers received All-Conference honors and Craig Welty Honorable Mention recognition. Coach Olsen attributed the team’s success to hard work and good defense. “Our seniors, Mike McMindes, Brad Powers, Casey Setsodi, Mark VanPelt and Craig Welty, along with Corey Myers and Rick Bell all made a significant contribution to the team.” The Junior Varsity had a record of 9-3. The Freshman team also had a successful campaign finishing with a record of 4-2. The dedication and hard work proved to be successful for the 1982-83 squad which finished the year at 18-3. With balanced scoring and all-around team play, the girls enjoyed many memorable high- lights: beating Burwell for the second time in the finals of the Conference Tournament, co-champions for the conference season record, Holiday Tournament champions, and district runner-up. The Centurions had three outstanding athletes named to the All-Conference Team: Senior Donna McDonald, Junior Kris Welty, and honor- able mention Senior Leann Veeder. The J.V. squad consisted mostly of freshmen who gained valuable experience. Their record was 2-9. The freshmen proved to be successful within their own class of competition finishing at 3-1. The Centurions won their first championship trophy, they scored more points and brought home more medals from districts than ever before, and tied the record for the State qualifiers in one season. Jerald Hurt, John Bellamy and Chris Stahl were the State qualifiers. Bobby McDonald, Mike Brown, Scott Franssen and Harry Grim won medals at districts but didn’t make it to State. Rod Tyma, Devin Obermiller, Randy Suntych and Willie Gottlob also wrestled varsity and did respectable jobs. The Championship trophy came at our own Centura Quad. All of the wrestlers scored points for the team as they defeated Shelton, Kenesaw and Kearney Catholic. The outlook for next year is very good as all but John Bellamy and Chris Stahl will be back. There are several eighth graders coming up to help fill in the gaps on the squad. 1983-84 should be a good year!! 58 DAN DEE DRIVE INN Junction Hwy. 58 11 Dannebrog, Nebraska 68831 ISLAND GLASS COMPANY 355 North Elm, P.O. At last he is no longer a “man on the move” between Cairo, Dannebrog, and Boelus. He is thoroughly enjoying and appreciating the new elementary facility. Teachers and students always find Mr. Blake’s office open to them and their concerns. SUPERINTENDENT Mr. Dean Drummond has now served seven very successful years as Centura’s superintendent. He is especially to be commended for the very fine facility that he steered into existence. Under his guidance he has continued to strive to get the best education possible for each dollar spent. In these times of economic woes he has been successful at this goal. He has managed a difficult, demanding job. He has with pride to stress the positive aspects of our school. PRINCIPAL The secondary principal for the past four years is Mr. David Karr. Mr. Karr has numerous responsibili- ties, but he always makes time to listen and help a student or teacher. One of his most outstanding qualities is that he “cares.” He is an involved, sensitive administrator. He keeps everyone informed and involved besides spending countless additional hours as a supporter of student activities - from athletic activities to photography and computers. 65 Faculty KEITH KUBIK Agriculture EMILY SODERMAN Business ANITA SCHLUND English CAROL TRUMLER Art EDWARD RYAN Business CHARLES WELLENSIEK Band KRISTI FISHER English VICKY BREINER English FRANZ TRUMLER German 66 SILVER DOLLAR BAR Dannebrog, Ne. Most of the first half of the year was used for the orientation of the members to the FFA organization. The FFA is just one part of the total vocational Agriculture Program. Supervised Occupational Experience Programs (Farm and work experience projects) and classroom teaching all play major roles. The FFA provides students with the leadership qualities needed in today’s agricultural world. The last half of the school year, the FFA spent trying to develop students’ leadership qualities through speech and live- stock contests, leadership camps, state convention and others. A special thanks must go to Joey Grabowski, Larry Gorecki, John Bellamy, Tom Fieldgrove, Steve Oseka, Todd Harders, and all the first year FFA officers for the hard work and dedication they showed in organizing the Centura FFA Chapter.
