Dress-up day came on Tuesday ana the girls wore their beautiful dresses and the boys came decked out in striking three piece suits. Career Day was Wednesday and each student came in the appropriate clothes or uniform of their future goals. Next, was Mix-Up day on Thursday and the combination of clothes was atrocious. The school’s spirit was really boosted as everyone was participating in the Spirit Week. Friday there was a special pep rally in the gym. The cheerleaders, through their enthusiasm, sparked a lot of spirit by their routines. The School Song, played by the band, was a highlight of the week and the response of singing students was trememdous. The night of the football game was finally here. It was the Centura Centur- ions against the Burwell Longhorns. There was also a volleyball game here the same night. The volleyball team lost two out of three sets, 15-10, 5-15, and 14-16 to the Longhorns. The football team came out with a victory over the Longhorns, 16-7. The Junior Class Slave Auction was held after the game. Saturday morning was the Harvest of Harmony Parade held in Grand Island. The band came home with a great feeling of pride even though they didn’t win the trophy. That night, the climax of the Spirit Week, Volleyball game, Football game, and slave auction was the Homecoming Dance and Crowning of Royalty. Crowned were King Tom Hulme and Queen Brigitte Schlund. The first attendants were Brent Bolander and Dorothy Cyboron. Second attendants were Rich Lemburg and Val Shoop. The coronation was over, then everybody danced to the music played by the “Knights of the Turntable”. Students from home economics classes modeled their currently sewn fashions. School and community activities for the year included boosting school spirit with a bleacher painting project, entertaining at the Senior Citizen Center and Christmas caroling. The chapter enjoyed sponsoring the Sweetheart Dance, Secret Pal week and participating in District and State SEARCH contests and conven- tions. The Centura Senior High Band furnished the music for the Commencement and the Seniors marched into the auditorium to the musical tune “Pomp Circumstance” played by the Band. After everyone was seated, the ceremony itself was started by a prayer and the Reverend David Sollit gave the Invocation. The welcome was given by our superintendent, Dean Drummond. The Principal, David Karr, introduced the outstanding students in the four courses of study that are offered at Centura High. Tom Hulme was the outstanding student in the field of Trades and Industry. Deanna Williams received the excellence award in the field of Business. The Excellence award for Home Economics was given to Linda Mieth. Dorothy Cyboron received the outstanding award in the course of study, College Preparatory. Each of the students gave a little speech of appreciation and thanks. Between these awards, Mrs. Harriets Reynolds, sang the theme song, “Time. The Chorus sang the song, “Hitch your dream to the Morning Star.” After this beautiful song, the principal, Mr. David Karr, presented the Class of 1982. The President of the Board of Education, Mr. Gary Christensen, then presented the diplomas to all the Seniors. There was joy and elation on the faces of the Seniors as they received their diplomas and realized that their 13 years of school had now drawn to a close. The Commencement was closed as it was opened with a prayer with Reverend David Sollitt asking a Benediction. The Recessional was played by the Centura Band as the Seniors and officials marched out of the auditorium. Many of the Seniors had receptions for their families and friends later that evening. 26 EXCELLENCE - COLLEGE PREPARATORY Dorothy Cyboron EXCELLENCE - TRADES AND INDUSTRIAL Tom Hulme EXCELLENCE - BUSINESS Deanna Williams UULUU EXCELLENCE - HOME ECONOMICS Linda Mieth 27 ANNUAL STAFF BACK ROW: Mr. Ryan, Carmen Jantzi, Stacey Schumacher, Donna McDonald, Carol Price. FLBA had 25 members for the 1981-82 school year. The year began with a bowling pizza party for new and old members. During one meeting mock job applications and interviews were conducted by the chapter officers. Highlights of the year included hosting student council members and winter coaches to a X-mas fun supper, conducting the annual spelling contest for the elementary students, and the Valentine candy raffle. Five sophomore members participated in the FBLA Leadership Conference at Omaha in April. They found this to be a pleasant and rewarding experience. The year was concluded with a membership supper and installation of officers at Buffy’s in Grand Island. They performed suc- cessfully at half - time shows, Harvest of Harmony, and participated in a Veteran’s Day parade in Ravenna. This year we had 44 of our band members in the conference band. This is quite an accomplishment in itself. At District Music Contest in Kearney competing in Class B is quite a challenge. The band’s hard work and concentrated effort payed off. They were awarded a Superior on their performance in the Contest. Over the year the band presented two major concerts as well as playing at football, volleyball, and basketball games. The support and encouragement of fellow students, faculty, parents, and patrons of the school is deeply appreciated by all band members. 45 SAXOPHONE SEXTET CHEERLEADERS TOP: Tammy Rief. Some of the following things are events we will enjoy remembering. We learned we could play with a good football team against Sandy Creek. A smile is brought to our face as we think of the bus ride home after the Fullerton game. We learned to deal with frustration and worked together after the Gibbon game. We ended up believing in each other and playing a great defensive game against Ravenna. Oh, the joys of winning our first homecoming game in years against Burwell. Our biggest win of the year (or maybe of anytime) was against third ranked Stromsburg. We did learn humility after a great newspaper write up against St. Paul. Of special memory is the cold and the goal line stand against Loup City, and the exciting game against Wood River. We, who were part of the team, also have individual images of our seniors that will be frozen in our minds. Brent did so well breaking clear for a long run and Bret making a tackle on the sideline. Ron, growling and intimidating, and Chris and Lonny anchoring the left side of our defense and both moving into the offensive line to strengthen us, was of great help. Jeff was our most improved blocker. Matt will be remembered for knocking down a pass, and Craig for recovering a fumble. Jim sure got hit on a fair catch. Rich seemed to have glue on his hands making a one - handed catch on the sideline and Tom sure pleased the fans making a catch and running it into the end zone on Homecoming. We will miss those Seniors next year, but we will have some fine Juniors and Sophomores back who we hope will fill the leadership roles for the rest of our team including 15 returning Freshmen. 48 BAASCH SON INC. The highlights of the season were winning the Lou Platte Conference Meet and qualifying for State with the runner-up trophy at District. Throughout the season the team was led by different individuals. Mike Duester and Ron Wilson were the early leaders; Brad Powers and Mike McMindes took over at the end of the season. Craig Welty and Bob Bourke filled in when injuries and illnesses plagued the others. The outlook for next year looks bright with four of these boys returning. Ron Wilson and Bob Bourke will have graduated. There should be some new boys to help fill in for them. The Girls Cross Country Team had a good season. It was highlighted by Liz Pedersen and Carol Price placing seventh and tenth at State. Liz Pedersen placed in every meet during the season as did Carol Price except when she was bothered by illness. Barb Brase, Sue Mingus, and Tammy Rief helped represent the team very well during the season. This was Barb and Tammy’s first year out for Cross Country and they worked hard and showed great improvement. The worst part about this season is that Liz, Carol, and Tammy will graduate this year. They leave some big shoes to be filled for next year. Hopefully some new faces will take the challenge next year and carry on the Centura Girls’ Cross Country Tradition. CAIRO LUMBER CO. Following preseason practices the Centurions traveled to Wood River for the first game. They came away winners 53-47. Three games later the team participated in the Palmer Holiday Tournament where they beat Clarks and lost to Palmer to finish runner-up. The Centurions were conference champions with a conference record of 5 and 1. The team also won the conference tournament beating Ravenna in the finals 50-44. In district play the team reached the finals by beating Ansley and North Loup-Scotia. In the finals the Centurions lost a close game to Palmer 45-43. Coach Olsen was pleased with the 15 and 5 season and pointed out that dedication, hard work, and good senior leadership contributed to the team’s success. Receiving all-conference honors were Brent Bolander, Mike McMindes, and Brad Powers. In addition, Craig Welty, Richard Lemburg, Ron Wilson, and Casey Setsodi saw most of the playing time. A strong bench helped Centura time and again throughout the season. Brent Bolander lead the team in scoring and rebounding, with 17 points per game and 9.6 rebounds per game. Mike McMindes was second in scoring with 14.3 points per game. One of the team’s strengths was their defense. They held their opponents to an average of 47.1 points per game. 54 ISLAND GLASS COMPANY 355 NORTH ELM. P O BOX 397 GRAND ISLAND. Tom WTieck A1 Bachman Owners and Operators 57 WRESTLING The Centurions improved throughout the season. Most of the wrestlers won at least one medal and some received medals at nearly every meet. The most improved wrestlers from last year have to be Jeff Kissler and Jerald Hurt. Both of these wrestlers found out what winning was all about and wrestled that way. Bob Bourke was the overall leader of the team — his experience and maturity at practice and meets made him that way. Others who showed good improvement during the season were Bobby McDonald, Mike Brown, John Bellamy and Ron Gans. Chris Stahl, Rod Tyma and Scott Franssen wrestled well and gained in experience, which should help them for next year. Jim Waskowiak was injured early in the season and did not see much action. This was bad because it was his senior year and we had high expectations for him. The outlook for next year is fairly good, and Centura should be a team to be reconed with. It makes one feel good to see such a large project almost completed. SUPERINTENDENT: “Take me to your leader.” That is an old quote that could well apply to what the elementary students will be saying next year as they are assimilated into the Centura Campus. May Mr. Dean Drummond show his leadership qualities in guiding both the elementary and secondary students. It is a challenge that is forboding but well within the range of the abilities of Mr. Drummond. PRINCIPAL: The third time is a charm. And so it is with Mr. David Karr. In as many years, Mr. Karr has guided the school along a course of good curriculum, good attitudes, good spirit and good cooperation. May his next year be even better. 65 JERRY MEYER KATHY METTENBRINK WAYNE LAURITSEN Physical Education Physical Education Math JIM OLSEN EMILY SODERMAN EDWARD RYAN Math Business Business FACULTY 'i 5E k t I DONNA ERIKSEN Social Studies BILL BROWN History LEROY BELL History CAROL TRUMLER ANNETTE DAVIS VANCE CHRISTENSEN Art Home Economics Guidance ALVIN MILKS CHARLES WELLENSIEK CYNTHIA BROWN Music Band Librarian GLORIA GAMMEL TONIA RUFF STAN HENDRICKS Special Education Special Education English KRISTI FISHER English JOHN KOPERSKI Industrial Arts BILL HAUSCHILD Industrial Arts FRANZ TRUMLER German 68 ROBERT MEYER Science DEBRA BEIGHTOL Science JUNIORS OFFICERS: President; Joey Grabowski, Vice President; Steve Oseka, Treasurer; Larry Gorecki, Secretary; Cheryl Teston. The Junior Class Slave Auction was a big success. Although there were only 40 slaves sold, we were able to raise $1425. Two concession stands rounded out our money-making projects. The class is now working hard at organizing the JR-SR Prom, which is once again being held at the Liederk- ranz. Not only did they participate in athletics, and other extra-curricular activites, they showed the true spirit they felt for their school. They supported their team all the way.
