This past football season was not an overly successful season if judged by record alone. It was a season of transition, of learning, and maturing for many of the players. The team began with 32 members but because of injury, sickness, and job complications the team at one point had only 17 players reporting for practice. We ended the season with 23. Despite this the team improved over the season and played their best game of the year near the end of the season against Loup City. Much of the credit for this goes to our lone senior Dennis Voss, who stuck with us and provided a good example for the younger players. Credit should also be given to our junior players who were forced into leadership positions such as Brent Bolander and Bret Osburn on offense, and Matt Grabowski, Ron Gans, and Chris Sinner on defense. Also making contributions were Rich Lemburg, Jim Waskowiak, Lonny Yilk, Jeff Kissler, and Tom Hulme. Our sophomore and freshman players who would have normally been playing reserve ball should be credited with hanging tough many times with much older and bigger players. These young men are on their way to becoming good ball players. We look forward to next year with returning lettermen and two honorable mention all-conference players. Matt and Brent. Our one first team all-conference player was senior Dennis Voss. 49 VOLLEYBALL BACK ROW: Gloria Gammel, Carol Schuster. FRONT ROWr: Kathy Kuszak. Kellie Stienike. I. SCHOOL OF BEAUTY 210 W. Second Grand Island, Nebraska “GO-PHER-IT” The 1980 Centura Volleyball season was an exciting and memorable one full of highlights and disappointing low spots. The Varsity finished with a 6-7 record overall and placed 3rd in our Lou-Platte Conference tournament held at Ravenna. We had a 2-4 conference record which tied us for 5th place standing with Loup City. The team executed one of their highest team serving percentages of the season with 591-656 equaling 90.1%. In the “Serving in a Row Club,” (with- out a miss), Val Shoop took high honors with 45 and Deb Plejdrup was 2nd with 42. This year’s All-Conference selections from Centura were: Setter - Dorothy Cyboron (Jr.), and spiker - Darra Hadenfeldt (Jr.). Darra also was one of the Grand Island Indepen- dent’s selections for area honor- able mention volleyball player. The Reserve Squad demon- strated skill in execution and team play as they finished the season a strong 6-2. The Fresh- man Squad finished the season a disappointing 2-4. FRONT ROW: Brad Powers, Mike Wilson, Ron Wilson, Mike Duester. The Centura Girls Cross Country Team season was highlighted by two girls earning medals at the State Meet. Carol Price finished 7th and Diane Koperski finished 10th. Both girls did an outstanding job and kept improving throughout the year. The girl’s team won two trophies, winning second at Centura’s Invitational and the Conferenece Meet at Loup City. LeAnn Veeder, Judy Koperski and Sue Mingus all contributed and did very well at times. The outlook for next season looks good with only Diane Koperski graduating. Provided all the girls are out again, plus a few new faces, Centura will be very competitive next year. The Boys Team seemed to peak at mid-season. Their only trophy came at the Ravenna Invitational. All four of the scorers won medals: Ron Wilson, third; Brad Powers, fourth; Mike Wilson, fifth; and Mike Duester, tenth. Powers and Duester were never able to repeat these performances and the team wasn’t able to win another trophy. Mike and Ron Wilson contin- ued winning medals. The team failed to make it to State after going for the last six or seven years. 52 VOGEL SALVAGE Cairo, NE 68824 THE RAVENNA BANK P.O. Cone Chuck Haggerty BOYS BASKETBALL GRAND ISLAND BOTTLING COMPANY Grand Island, Nebraska 68801 The 1980-81 Centura basketball team played a very competitive basketball schedule. The team consisted of 5 seniors, 3 juniors, 4 sophomores, and 7 freshmen. Everyone worked hard and did their part to help the team. Early in the season the team lost close games to S.E.M., Shelton, and Burwell. Throughout the season, the Centura fans saw some exciting basketball. One example was the Grand Island Central Catholic game in which Centura played the Crusaders within 3 points for the first half, but failed to score consistently in the second half against a tough Central Catholic zone defense. The highlight of the season had to be the trip to North Loup Scotia. Centura victories in both the varsity (55-39) and reserve (48-24) contests resulted in pandamonium following the games. In the game Centura outshot the Panthers 36% to 22% from the field and 58% to 55% from the free throw line. Centura won the battle on the boards 42-33. In the last game of the season, and in districts, poor shooting spelled Centura’s doom, as the team finished the season with a record of 1-14. While the team’s final record doesn’t show it, the team did improve throughout the year and played well against many tough opponents. Centura’s leading scorer and rebounder was Brent Bolander with an average of 13.3 points and 9 rebounds per game. Other leaders were Mark Lemburg, who scored 11.7 points per game and Richard Lemburg, who pulled an average of 6 rebounds per game. The future looks bright for Centura with experience and some good, young players returning for the 81-82 season. Coach Olsen is optimistic and hopes for a bigger squad next year. VARSITY: Mr. Olsen. Finishing with a disappointing 2-11 record, several of these defeats were at the hands of highly regarded state contenders, while other games were fought down to the wire. Poor field goal shooting percentages plagued the squad throughout the season, but our freethrow shooting improved to just over the 50% mark. A new game high for total score was set at 52 points. Leading rebounders were Kellie Stienike - 12.1 per game. Deb Plejdrup - 7.7 per game, Melissa Christensen - 7.6 per game. In scoring, Darra Hadenfeldt led with 16.9 pts. per game, Kellie Stienike with 8.1 pts. per game, and Melissa Christensen with 6.9 pts. per game. Out front in steals was Darra Hadenfeldt with 65 steals. The following also lettered on Varsity: Julie Stutzman - Sr, Kathy Kuszak - Jr, Donna McDonald - Soph, Leann V’eeder - Soph, and Barb Kauk - Soph. Selected for the Lou-Platte All-Conference team was Darra Hadenfeldt, with Kellie Stien- ike earning a honorable mention. The Reserves finished the season with their second best record at 5-5. There were 11 boys out for the season but injuries and illnesses took their toll during the season. Todd Nelson missed most of the season with a knee injury and Jim Waskowiak missed several meets because of sickness and an injury. With the improvement that most of these wrestlers made plus the experience they gained, Centura should have a better season next year. The leaders in pins, takedowns and escapes are as follows: pins; Chris Stahl - 9, Jim Waskowiak and Dennis Voss - 6, take-downs; Chris Stahl - 29, Jim Waskowiak - 20, Dennis Voss - 19, Bob Bourke - 17, escapes; Chris Stahl - 27, Jeff Kissler - 16, Bob McDonald - 15. Centura patrons passed a school bond issue granting the construction of a new elementary facility adjoining the present high school complex. Mr. Drummond’s coordination of planning sessions with teachers and architects, show the foresight and efficient organization for which he is noted. Prospects for the future are exciting and challenging for Centura’s superintendent. ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL Mr. Glen Blake’s traveling days will soon be over, as he anxiously anticipates construction of the new elementary school. Planning of facilities to promote smooth and efficient operation of K-6 classes has been a pleasant and fulfilling experience for Mr. Blake. PRINCIPAL Administrative duties of a high school principal are numerous and varied. Mr. David Karr approaches his responsibilities with foresight and enthusiasm. In his second year at Centura, Mr. Karr has been busy with curriculum analysis and projection of possible improvements, along with coordination of academic and curricular activities to provide a diversified educational experience for Centura’s students. Mr. Karr’s positive attitude has carried over to students and faculty, making this a good year for all involved with Centura High School. 65 ROBERT MEYER Science STAN HENDRICKS English FACULTY BILL HAUSCHILD Industrial Arts DEBRA BEIGHTOL Science FRANZ TRUMLER German VICKY BREINER English KRISTI FISHER English ANITA SCHLUND English 66 DONNA ERIKSEN Social Studies JERRY MEYER Physical Education JIM OLSEN Math BILL BROWN LEROY BELL History History CAROL SCHUSTER Physical Education EMILY SODERMAN Business WAYNE LAURITSEN Math EDWARD RYAN Business 67 ALVIN MILKS Music TONIA RUFF Special Education CHARLES WELLENSiEK Band' VANCE CHRISTENSEN Guidance ANNETTE DAVIS CAROL TRUMLER Home Economics Art 68 Underclassmen JUNIORS Terry Aswegan Ruth Brundage Matt Grabowski Tom Hulme Deb Kyhn Linda Mieth Brent Bolander Craig Caspersen Ron Gana Lori Keefe Rich Lemburg Nea Miller Danny Boltz Julie Christensen Kristi Eilenstine Jeff Kissler Bonnie Lewandowsk Karen Miller Bob Bourke Jan Clark Scott Grim Lori Kluthe Tracy Lewis Lee Miller Andrea Brown Dorothy Cyboron Darra Hadenfeldt Judy Koperski Dana McDowell Jim Nielsen Aleana Breuklander Rick Dymek Jenny Haile Kathy Kuszak Kathy Merritt Toni Nielsen Kevin Nye Lori Obermiller Bret Osburn Deb Plejdrup Eric Pollock Liz Pedersen Jordean Potratz Carol Price Tammy Rief Yvonne Rowland Brigitte Schlund Patricia Selden The Junior Class was very active and successful with money raising projects. This year the Prom was once again held at Liederkranz. The winter months have been spent working on committees to finalize details for the Prom of 1981. In addition to their academic studies, sports events, and school organ- izations, they worked at raising money for the class. This year their projects were a chili feed, concession stand, and a television and radio raf- fle. Along with high school athletics, music, speech and drama, the freshmen started preparing for their graduation for years down the road. The main project for the freshmen was to build up their class treasury. They did this by hosting concession stands during both football and basketball seasons. Many ideas for future projects were discussed and plans to put them in action were made. It appears to be a bright future for Centura with the leadership being offered by the class of 84.
