As superintendent. Mr. Drummond is responsible for the overall operation of the school system and has arduously pursued the objective of providing for the students the best possible experience for each dollar spent. As inflation increases, additional demands will be placed on the business of managing the system, but Mr. Drummond's keen insight in dealing with school affairs will allow continued success for the Centura Public Schools. PRINCIPAL Centura's new principal this year is Mr. David Karr who comes to us from Raymond Central High School. A native of Rockville, Mr. Karr has studied at Kearney State, UN-L. UN-O. and Fort Hayes State. Belief in a well-rounded educational experience is a guiding force for Mr. Karr, as he feels a strong academic and vocational base should accompany school activities. Mr. Karr is pleased with this first year as the faculty, student body, and community make Centura a tremendous place to work. ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL A man on the go is Mr. Glenn Blake, our capable principle of the Centura elementary schools. Traveling daily to each school is no hindrance to Mr. Blake, as he controls the smooth operation of the three elementaries. Directing the capable staff requires a conscientious effort, one which Mr. Blake cheerfully provides. Head Coach Bill Brown felt that the seniors showed great leadership to underclassmen and held the team together. The team attended the Nebraska vs. Penn State Football game in Lincoln. It was an event they enjoyed and one that will never be forgotten. Centura's All-Conference player was Dan Brockman. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Ron Bolander and Joel Christensen. Although the season was not outstanding, the team is building for a super 1980 season. Their spirit will always be a dominant factor. COACHES. Bill Hauschild, Leroy Bell. Bill Brown. BOYS BASKETBALL Boys' basketball at Centura in 1979-1980 was a frustrating experience for players, coaches, and fans. Fighting a tough road schedule and equally tough opposition, the Centurions finished a winless 0-16. Senior captain Ron Bolander and Junior captain Mark Lemburg were scoring leaders while Ron and so- phomore Brent Bolander were rebound- ing pace-setters under the direction of Coach C. H. Hagstrom. The Centurion Junior Varsity coached by Bill Brown, finished 2-10. Paced by Juniors Godfrey Brokenrope and Doran Moss, and sophomores Rich Lemburg and Chris Sinner, the JV's gained valuable experience for the coming seasons. Centura's freshman logged a 3-3 win-loss record while dropping two contests by one point. Chris Schaffer and Brad Powers paced the freshman in scoring, brightening the future for Centurion Basketball. VARSITY BACK ROW: Mr. Hagstrom. Stacey McHargue. Dana McDowell. Dave Was- kowiak. With varying levels of experience from the players, the development of team leadership, confidence, trust, poise, enthusiasm and desire is an important growth of every team. Helping to provide this growth were six seniors: Pam Jantzi. Tam Jantzi. Brenda Kerzman. Linda Nelson. Louise Nelson, and Nancy Swanson. Underclassmen who also helped the team's growth and who also lettered were: Melissa Christensen. Kellie Stienike, Darra Hadenfeldt. Kathy Kuszak. Deb Plejdrup. and Leann Veeder. Finishing the season with a varsity record of 3-12 and a Reserve record of 2-7. both squads worked on improving their mental game as well as their physical game. The highlight of the Varsity season came when we upset Burwell in the semi-finals of the conference. Louise Nelson was named to the all conference team and Darra Hadenfeldt earned the honor of honorable mention. Louise led the team in scoring and in rebounding by getting fifteen points and rebounds r steals with 43, third in points with 8, and first in free throws with 25 in points. Kellie Stienike was second in scoring with 7 and second in rebounds with 8. Nancy Swanson was third in rebounds with 7 a game. BACK ROW: Mis Schuster. Joan Stutzman. Deb Plejdrup. Kathy Kuszak. THE CAIRO RECORD Serving Cairo-Boelus Dannebrog Cairo, Nebraska Phone 485-4181 25 WRESTLING Wrestling started on a high note with 18 hopefuls out for practice, and all but one weight class filled. People quitting and not dropping weight soon cut the squad to 15 with only 10 of the 2 weight classes filled. Injuries and illnesses took a toll also, and seemed to take the heart out of the season. The following wrestlers represented Centura during 1979-80: Bob Bourke, So. Deryl Roth, Sr. Chris Stahl, Fr. Matt Grabowski. So. Todd Nelson, Jr. Dan Brockmann, Sr. Jerry Wicht, Jr. Jeff Carpenter. Sr. Tom Hulme, So. Jim Waskowiak, So. Doug Sieburg. Jr. Dennis Voss. Jr. Bill Stahl. Sr. John Bellamy, Fr. Bob Bourke led the team in take downs with I7-, Chris Stahl had 15 and Dennis Voss had 14. Pins were led by Chris Stahl with II; Dan Brockmann had 10 and Dennis Voss had 7. No one on the team made it to State and only Jim Waskowiak and Dan Brockmann placed at Districts. The 1980-81 season looks better with several good eighth graders moving up to senior high level. The added year s experience to the varsity squad should help, also. 36 BACK ROW: Sondra Wing. The Cross Country team enjoyed a very successful season considering only one of the squad had been out before. Mike Wilson a reserve last year, was the only experienced runner. Myron Koperski Sr., Ron Wilson So.. Bill Jensen So., and Jack Berger Fr. were all first year runners. The most unique thing about the season was that the team went to State. Not a medal or a trophy was won. but the team ran well enough as a group to qualify. This was a team effort all year. Girls ran for the first time this year. They did not have a state or district meet this year, but they were preparing for next year’s. They gained valuable experience in cross country running and learned how to condition themselves for the two mile run. The girls team consisted of Carol Price So., Tam Jantzi Sr., Diane Koperski Jr., and LeAnn Veeder Fr. Kathy Merrit also ran but was unable to complete the season because of injury. 31 GOLF BACK ROW: Dan Boltz. Keith Edwards. Deryl Roth. Dan Brockmann. Jeff Kissler. Mike Whitefoot. Mr. Brown. On Tuesday 50’s days’' were back into the swing, hair greased back, tee shirts, bobby socks, and saddle shoes. Wednesday brought out three piece suits and dresses, and brought out a good response. Shorts, tee shirts, and hats were things seen on Thursday. Classes were dismissed early for the fun and excitement of the Jr. Olympics. Friday was the traditional burgandy and white day as the excitement for the Centura and Burwell football game grew. All through the week of Homecoming Student Council sponsored the Kiss a Pig contest and Friday at the Pep Rally the teacher with the most money in their can had to Kiss a Pig”. The runner-up was Miss Schuster, and the winner was Mr. Brown. Saturday night was the Homecoming Coronation with Jerry's Disco providing the music and Follow your Dreams as the theme. Promoting school and community spirit at athletic events is the aim of Centura Pep Club. Members are dedicated participants at all athletic events at the school and did much to keep spirit high. To raise money, they have each given up eight hours of their time to work as slaves. This year’s slave auction raised a record amount of money. This, plus four very profitable concession stands, seem to have solved our financial worries for this year. With good planning and some hard work, the prom was a great success. Just maybe as we sit back and enjoy ”our” prom next year we will appreciate some of the hard work that has gone into its planning. CAIRO LUMBER CO. This thought is always present on the minds of the sophomores and it creates anxiety, anxiousness, fear, tension, and firm hope that they have enough money to really put on a good prom. Earning money always seems to be the goal for the sophomore class. Their efforts for this year included several concession stands at various ball games. Another money making activity has been a chili feed, which was quite successful. Thanks to the patronage of many parents, adults, and students, the sophomore fund raising projects have been successful. OFFICERS: Vice President; Bill Jensen. Treasurer; Kathy Kuszak. Their class was not large, but they have already shown that they were strong. They earned money by selling the most tickets for the basketball game between the UNL Senior Football Players and the Area All-Stars. This C ljuheK u ?ak gave them the privilege of running the concession stand and receiving some of its profit. This was just a beginning for the future success of the goals of this freshman class. 78 Donna McDonald Sally Mingus Pam Neville Paul Perkins Bradley Powers Chris Schaffer Beth Schroeder Scott Schroeder Stacey Schumacher Rodney Schweitzer Casey Setsodi Chris Stahl Dawn Stutzman MILLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY ■ P.O.BOX 1288 ■ GRAND ISLAND, NEBRASKA 68801 HIGHWAYS 30 281 ■ PHONE 308 382-6610 RHODA'S 66 SERVICE Phone 485-4431 Cairo, Nebraska CAIRO PHARMACY Phone 485-4341 Cairo, Nebraska David L. I live in a town called Nordhorn in West Germany. Nordhorn has a population of 50.000 and lies in the northwestern part of the country, only two miles from the Dutch border. My father Karl Gerhard Sieckmann works for a Health Insurance Company; my mother Elisabeth Sieckmann is a housewife. I have a brother. Edmund, who is 16 years old. Right now I also have a sister”. Gigi Siemens, who is an exchange student from Indiana and is living with my family for the year I am gone. When I go back in August. I will have two more years of school left. Our school system is different, there are 9-. IO-, and 13-grade schools. Since I want to go to University. I have to do 13 grades. The last three grades (11 13) are about like college here. Unfortunate- ly. I cannot get any credits for my senior year at Centura because the system is too different. I have to do the Qth grade again in Germany. Looking back at my stay in the United States, now I can really say I learned a lot. not only about this country and the people, but also about myself and the culture of my own country. I want to thank Centura High School for having me as an exchange student. I especially liked Band and Home Economics. And last, but not least, I want to say a big Thank You” to the Morris Kauk family in Farwell who gave me a home in a country so far away from home. I want to thank them for letting me share their home and be part of their family. If anybody would like to write me. my German address is: Petra Sieckmann. Nurn- berger Str. 89. 4460 Nordhorn. W. We are so used to people being around us, alive and healthy and happy that we take the great gift of life itself so much for granted. It is only when that personal touch is gone, snuffed out in the gift of youth, that we really take stock of the gifts around us. Terry Fielder was one of those gifts, a real bundle of joy and happiness and life. Living for him was a special time, a time for truly living, for real sharing and getting the most out of life. This feeling for life that he had was infectious and given to many. His smiling touch of life, the fun. the seriousness, the funny times of living helped others see life as worth living also. Terry participated in activities whether in school or outside school with the vigor of one who wished to get the most out of life. His Boy Scout activities along with football and many of his other talents helped inspire others to greater participation. In Memoriam means in memory. May we the living remember him and how he touched our lives and may we remember also to be inspired to live our lives to the fullest.
