Ullman S. Whitefoot L. Wicht T. Wicht C. Wrzesinski E. Zachry 25 Lili is our foreign exchange student and is loved by everyone. We're all going to hate to see her leave. She's been a dear friend to many and she's brought a lot of sunshine into Centura this past year. It's been great to know her and even though she’ll go back to Colombia in June, we're sure she'll remain in many of our hearts. The following is written by Lili. My name is Liliana Corredor but everyone calls me Lili and I really like it. I am 17 years old and I have two brothers, 18 and 15 years old, and a sister who is 12. My father is a doctor and my mother is a volunteer nurse of a hospital. The Centura student council sponsored me. I came September 2, 1971 and I lived with three of the nicest families in the U.S.A. 1 spent three months each in the home of the Leonard Pritschau's, the Virgil Scofield's, and the Marvin Leth's, and with each one of them I had unforgettable moments. Among the things 1 really enjoyed were learning to bake bread, riding a sled for the first time in my life, ice skating, teaching Spanish, going to Denver, visiting museums, going shopping, and going camping. My emotions reacted in so many ways—one minute I wanted to cry and maybe the next minute I wanted to shout for happiness. All these kind of expe- riences gave me maturity and restlessness to get a bet- ter understanding about the human race. Also, it was very important to look and analyze the people's char- acter and appreciate their reaction. This has been a terrific year and the time has gone so fast. This has been for me the most wonderful moments knowing dif- ferent people, sharing my life with them, learning so many slangs in an unknown language. The school was THE BEST! I learned a lot in my second senior year and I really made lots of friends. Everybody is so nice ... I didn't even remember I wasn't home! This was my trip—a trip that gave me fantastic opportunities and excellent knowledges. All this will be a remembrance full of delight and illusion. I never imagined that I was going to live so many exciting moments. Do you think 1 will forget this? I wouldn't even think about it. Wouldn't it be nice if 1 could come back and visit all the places that made me so happy? The only words I can say are just thank you. Thank you friends, thank you Centura . . . I'll keep you in my heart! LILLI 26 STATE BANK OF DANNEBROG Member FDIC Dannebrog, Nebr. WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY CLUB FRIENDS. BACK ROW: G. Olson, D. Fries. R. Wagner, D. Schmidt. A. Hansen. N. SECRETARY TREASURER: Mona Siefert. NEWS REPORTER: Jody McHargue. Centura’s Chapter of the National Honor Society, has become much more active in the past couple years. Membership in the National Honor Society has be- come recognized nationally as one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a high school student. Mem- bership, while being an honor, also carries with it a re- sponsibility. In Centura's Chapter, members are requir- ed to keep a 2.0 average or better to remain a member. However, this is not the only responsibility N.H.S. members have. Besides scholastics, membership is also based on character, leadership and service. This organization has become much more active in Centura the past couple years. It has sponsored such things as Book Fairs and a tea for the faculty. N.H.S. members tutored students last year and plans are being made to do this again this year. 28 THE OVERLAND NATIONAL BANK Grand Island, Nebraska ROBERTS-FAIRACRES FOODS Grand Island, Nebraska F.H.A BACK ROW: M. Last fall the club attended the District Conference at Ord. The members are always busy cooking. F.H.A. was responsible for serving refreshments at the musical Centura presented, Swinging High. The delicious rolls were not only appreciated by the public but also by the cast. Valentine's Day was a busy time for F.H.A. members. The girls made cookies and candy to send to recent graduates who are in the service. Many new and different recipes were tried out at the Valentine's party when the girls made fondue. One of the spring activities is a cosmetic party. CAIRO LUMBER COMPANY Cairo, Nebraska Phone 485-4671 CAIRO FARM SERVICE Nutrena Feeds Cairo, Nebraska 29 PEP CLUB SPONSORS: Mrs. Olson, Mrs. Davis. Pep Club’s main duty is to provide school spirit and enthusiasm for the athletic events of the year, and pro- mote good relations between student body and students of other schools. We got this year's spirit rolling by having a cover- ed dish supper in the beginning of the year to elect offi- cers and make signs for the football games. This was also a good chance to get acquainted with the new members and teach them yells. Homecoming was an especially busy time for pep club members as we really worked on building the spirit. We held a bonfire pep rally which enthused everyone for the homecoming game against Burwell. We made money by selling mums for the coronation and dance. We sold magazines again this year to boost our treasury. Most of the money is used to sponsor the Award's Banquet in the spring. CHEERLEADERS VARSITY: Sandy Johnson, Kristi Haynes, Ramona Seifert. STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS: NEWS REPORTER: Glenda Johnson. SECRE- TARY: Sandy Johnson. PRESIDENT: Dean Cyboron. VICE PRESIDENT: Jim Hyde. Student Council--what does it mean? This year, it's meant an involvement between students, administra- tion, and community. Its main goal has been to provide a median between the student body and administration. While Student Council has been very active with school functions, it spends a great deal of its time main- taining organization among all the school clubs. This perhaps is one of its most important functions. Providing this unity is a full time job. The year started off with unity when Student Council sponsored a Kickoff”. Stu- dents gathered at the high school and there was class competition in games--which included lots of smashed up eggsl Watermelon was provided for the hungry mob so it ended up being a messy but fun night! A big event that Student Council is in charge of is homecoming. We got the spirit rolling by planning a pa- rade, coronation and dance. Along with sponsoring such things as homecoming and the Valentine's dance, Student Council also had charge of the things behind the scene” such as conces- sion stands. There are plans in the future to do charitable work among the communities. GERMAN CLUB German Club got the ball rolling early this year with a bake sale in the early fall. Later in the semester we baked bread and sold it for 500 a loaf. Quite a job but we had fun and it boosted our treasury quite a lot! During the home basketball games we raffled off tickets for cakes and sold dill pickles. Although we’ve been working hard we've also had a lot of fun together. In November we all traveled to Omaha to attend the Tyrolerfest. In February we re- turned to Omaha to hear the Vienna Boys Choir. This winter we all gathered down by the river and had loads of fun skating and eating chili. Probably the highlight of the year will be our trip to Chicago. Thirteen members will go to visit Ger- man Town in Chicago and will stay with members of the German Club in Freeport, Illinois. Although we've done many entertaining things together, we think the most fun has been just being with each other. We owe a lot to Mr. Trumler for putting up with us and for being so enthusiastic in accomplishing all the things we wanted to do. The senior members would like to say good luck to the members of German Club next year and we only hope you will have as much fun as we've had! 34 LEE'S ELECTRONICS Cairo, Nebr. F.B.L.A. BACK ROW: G. Future Business Leaders of America is a newly formed club in Centura this year and one which has attracted many students. It’s the second largest Chapter in the state of Nebraska with 67 members. The purpose of F.B.L.A. is to give the the students an outside activity that will supplement the major course of study-business education. This club is full of spirit and ambition. Their first project was to gain a Chapter Charter. They helped accomplish this by selling Spook Insurance around Halloween time and by sponsoring an old time movie film festival. This was open to the public and it was loads of fun! They’ve also been active in the community by helping to collect for UNICEF. The Centura Chapter of F.B.L.A. was installed as an official National Chapter in December when they held a banquet in which members as well as parents attended. The Centura Chapter helped with the organization of a Kearney Chapter and attended their banquet in January. The members sold Big Red checkbooks and phone book covers in order to earn money for delegates to attend the state convention. Another activity included setting up an F.B.L.A. booth for the Nebraska State Business Education Con- vention in Kearney. The sophomores served hot chili to ward off the cold. On Friday afternoon everyone came to Cairo for the parade led by Centura's marching band. There were lots of good floats following the Fairyland theme from all the grades. First prize went to the Seniors with their pur- ple cow. Then all the cheerleaders and both pep clubs had another pep rally. The victory speech was given by Mr. Dave Schaffer. That night the Centurions met the Burwell Long- horns on the gird and won in a 12-0 victory. The week reached its climax on Saturday night when last year's royal couple, Jeannette Lemburg and Bar- ry Schultz, crowned Marilyn Klinkacek and Glen Lemburg to reign over the 1972 court. Members of their court were Lynnette Grim and Rick Hald, first runners-up and Kathy Veeder and Dave Fries, second runners-up. Royal crown bearers were Tammy Boltz and Ver- nan Swanson. Robe bearers were Jane Meyers and George McHargue. Honor guards were Jan Bellairs and Jim Hyde and Sharon Lemburg and Arnie Hinkson. Debbie Gorecki did a very fine job as mistress of ceremonies. The following week they traveled to Raven- na for a triangular meet. Centura finished second, one stroke behind the winning team St. Paul. The next few weeks were spent trying to get use to grass greens in preparation for the Conference Tourna- ment at Loup City. In the first match on grass Centura placed third behind Loup City and Wood River in a trian- gular meet at Loup City. The following week Centura was second in a triangular at Loup City again on grass, beating Shelton and finishing behind the host school Loup City. In the Conference Tournament Centura finished third in the team standings. Dave Fries finished seventh in medal play. The rest of the season was spent on the more familiar sand greens and the team kept gaining momen- tum right through the State meet. In two dual meets Centura annihilated both St. Paul and Ravenna in preparation for the Lawrence Invi- tational. Thirteen teams were on hand at Lawrence and Centura with its strong team effort placed second in the meet behind the host school Lawrence. This was the first trophy for the golf team and hopes started to rise for the State Meet. May 6th will be a day the Centura golf team re- members for a long time. It was a rainy cold day at the State Sand Greens Tournament started but the weather didn't bother the Centura golfers as they turned in their usual good rounds to finish as the STATE CHAMPIONS STATE CHAMPION TEAM: Bill Petersen, George Me Hargue, Dave Fries, Rich Fries. for sand greens in class A.
