mem .yscmzem Organized in 1946, the Cairo High School Band has been most active throughout the twelve years of its existence. It has played for practically every civic celebration plus many out-of-town engagements. During the school year of 1954-1955 the band played some seventy-odd public performances averaging more than two a week. The band has participated in every band contest in the state dur- ing the past twelve years, winning a total of one hundred fifty-six First Division, ten Second Division, and two Third Division Ratings. W. T. VERRAN Dfrecfo, At the state contest in 7952, the last of its kind, the Cairo High School Band earned a perfect score of thirteen First Division Ratings, making an all time record. At the regional contests held in Moultrie in 1955 and1956, in Thomasville in 1957, and in Albany in 7958, the band made perfect scores of First Division Ratings for all of the many events entered. Altogether, this makes the sixth year, in seven years of competition, that the band has earned a per- fect score in contest. No other school band in this area holds such a record. It was the first band to use black light in its football halt-time shows, the first to use Swiss Flag Swingers, and the first and only band of its lcind in Georgia to go annually on extended concert tours. Since 7956 these tours have taken the band into Florida, Alabama, and South Carolina in addition to their extensive coverage ot' Georgia. The l958 tour alone covered 938 miles. This year, l959, the band will forego the annual tour in order to accept an invitation to play for the annual meeting ofthe Georgia Music Educators Association, which meets in conjunction with the Georgia Education Association in Atlanta, March 78 through 27.
