Ile married the daughter of a Kaskaslaia Chief and lmecame the first pere manent settler of Caholtia, then called Notre Dame de Kahokiaf' ln 1795 county government arrived. Gov- ernor Arthur St. Clair organized St. Clair County and made Caholtia the county seat until in l8l-l it was moved to Belleville. In I8-H the hlississippi River rose and flooded all the land from Alton to Kaslias- impressive hi itor, ltia causing many families to abandon Ca- hokia. A huge inland lake was formed hy the flood waters, not receding for several months, and stretching thirty miles in length, ten miles in width, and from twen- tv to forty feet in depth. It completely covered the fertile Bottoms and tore from their foundations and completely sulimerged everv structure huilt luv human hands. The inhalliitants of the village fled to the Bluffs and to St. Louis where sicltncss and disease followed and caused manv deaths. Malaria was their chief enemy. As the flood waters reeeded and the people returned to the devastated area, they found much new land had lieen added to the eastern shore of the Mississippi pushing the village of Caholtia farther away from the river. With the flood the thriving community declined in importance and remained a small, obscure town until recent years. Since then, growth of the area has heen steady enough to warrant the construction of huildings for husiness and pulilic service interests.
