Ile married the daughter of a Kaskaslaia Chief and lmecame the first pere manent settler of Caholtia, then called Notre Dame de Kahokiaf' ln 1795 county government arrived. Gov- ernor Arthur St. Clair organized St. Clair County and made Caholtia the county seat until in l8l-l it was moved to Belleville. In I8-H the hlississippi River rose and flooded all the land from Alton to Kaslias- impressive hi itor, ltia causing many families to abandon Ca- hokia. A huge inland lake was formed hy the flood waters, not receding for several months, and stretching thirty miles in length, ten miles in width, and from twen- tv to forty feet in depth. It completely covered the fertile Bottoms and tore from their foundations and completely sulimerged everv structure huilt luv human hands. The inhalliitants of the village fled to the Bluffs and to St. Louis where sicltncss and disease followed and caused manv deaths. Malaria was their chief enemy. As the flood waters reeeded and the people returned to the devastated area, they found much new land had lieen added to the eastern shore of the Mississippi pushing the village of Caholtia farther away from the river. With the flood the thriving community declined in importance and remained a small, obscure town until recent years. Since then, growth of the area has heen steady enough to warrant the construction of huildings for husiness and pulilic service interests. One of these huildings, Caholiia junior and Senior lrligli School, is a com- munity landmarlt and an edifice deserving and receiving a great deal of communitv pride and respect. 1 f 1 uomsco ING .oo1'sALL ...MRD OCT 24 BPM itil Q, s . ,, 'wwgg si 2 I Lrg Anmex-es f ff? 17 x fx I QW x HX xxji as CH A f Qf' N ,E l S L MQ Q ,, i rwivfis Y , a , if X ' 7'- if K A 4 -nr- I Y! Return Vllc, the Cahochran stall, are cs- corting you on a tour through our school. ln so doing we have invited to our school llour little Indians, who were once Braves at Caholtia, to scout and record on these pages edu- cation and activities at Caholtia. CHIEF KNONV NOTHING, Faculty Chief, known and feared for his niighty swing ol' the paddle. snealted in to one ol those wild teachers' meetings, stumlnled our again with a satisliicd smirlt on hifi lace hut lailcd to disclose to his com- panions just what had taken place Cl IIIZI3 KNOW' IT ALL, Classes Chiel, was once the champion spit- wad thrower and terror of the halls, hut was greatly admired hy his fel- low students lor his wisdom and dis- tinguished bits ol' philosophy. CHIEF CIIA-CIIA Charlie, Ae- tivities Chief, one-time big wheel on. the dance floor and student council president, dropped in at several clulx meetings and dances. Ile recalled his own mercenary antics-setting up the student council as a money-malving, organization hy eharging admission to the jive-hive, establishing a used- car lot in the parlxing area, and sell- ing ticltets to a drag race on the circle drive. Cllllll: FICI ITINC SPIRIT, Sports Chiel, returned to Caholtiais athletic field to reminisce alzout the days when he had heen home-run king, when he scored twenty touch- downs in one llootluall game, and when he made llilitv points in one lrasltetliall game. Featured in each ol' their respec- tive sections, these lout' proud alumni will guide you through our school land. I IJEUICATIU To the memory of Miss Helen Huffman the 1959 Cahochron staff wishes to dedicate this yearbook as a token of recognition of her untiring endeavors to boost Cahokia High School's extra-curricular activities and scholastic standards. As a glowing example of the ideal teacher, Miss Huffman devoted herself to the teaching Profession never failing to hold uppermost in mind the welfare of her students. The school personnel and those students who had through attending her classes known her friendly smile, respected advice, and warm teaching per' sonality were deeply saddened by her untimely death in the spring of 1958. 4s,- , N K i. ,,... ff 'F-,D w - ' 'ffj:a,1.: I ' ' ' 1:-235. Juniors filled the piggy bank We, the seniors of 1959, have, indeed, a great deal to be proud of. In the past four years, we have passed through perhaps the most wonderful part of our lives. We are proud to have had the privilege of spending these years at Cahokia. When at last we hang up our moceasins for the final time, we will remember sadly, but also happily, the good times we had during these four years. lt was not all fun, but through experience we learned there is a serious side to life, as well as the lighter side. As freshmen we first had the privilege of attend- ing tribal functions. But still, it was the seniors we looked up to and respected. Our turn would come. Our sophomore year is truly one we will never forget. We tossed our offering-a piece of wood- into the tribal fire and became full-fledged Comanf ches. We now had the responsibilities of tribesmen. Rhapsody in Blue, our junior prom, was carried out in blue and silver. This was our greatest group accomplishment thus far. But we knew our greatest accomplishments were yet to come. lkiany nights were spent during football and basketball seasons working in our trading post to finance our prom. At last we are seniors. We face the future with courage and high hopes. We are sorry to leave our beloved reservation, but we are even prouder to have reached the last rung of the ladder. For us, it is not the end, but the beginning, and as we say good-bye, we step aside to let the juniors become rul- ers of the reservation and of the Comanche heritage. ' . l fi , :xnxx .14 lg . il l 0 ll Seniors have they to future The junior class of 1959 has accomplished a rec! ord that can be respected by those who follow. Through their co-operation and hard work they have been able to expand the interest of their class activi- ties. Under the direction of their sponsors, Miss Shirley Erwin, Nr. Leslie Brumfield, hir. Bill Orr, Mr. Bennie llarris, and Mr. llarrison Thomas they have participated in various activities with the idea of building their treasury. The junior class took complete charge of the con- cession stands at both the football and the basket- ball games. They sold stationery with a sketch ol' our higl1 school printed on it. The Profits from these projects went toward their main goal-the staging of the junior-senior prom. , llomecoming was truly a memorable occasion for them. Although they spent many hours decorating their lloat for tl1e parade, their work was not in vain. Their Victory Ship rewarded them with a first place in the llomecoming Parade. 'ljhe crowning of the new l958 llomecoming Queen also brought honor to the junior class be- cause hliss Beverly Vvyrick, a junior, was crowned queen. Later, at Christmastime, the junior class was proud to have Miss Iudy Neuf crowned F. Il. A. Sweetheart Queen at the annual Christmas Dance. Camera caught history class in happy mood. Larry Betz, Presidentg Larry Oden, Vice-President: Herbie Rainbolt, Secretaryg Pat Levin, Treasurer. Aside from thc recreation and activities the juniors had a more serious jobgthat of fulfilling their desire to acquire an education. And finally in April, the receiving ol' their class rings was a cause for great excitement. As the year ended tl1e juniors had only one more year to eompleteg they will be stepping into the whole new and exciting world of a senior. 0 4 qwv I 3 kk XX wh! They chose Mike Sweigert as their president. 'ludy Brown became their vice-president and Pat Demetrulias was chosen to represent them as their secretary-treasurer. The new sophomores eagerly began work on their Homecoming float which they labeled David and Goliath. Committees were appointed, and under the supervision of Miss Iona Masten the float was com- pleted and entered in the parade. Since the sophomore class initiation has been abol- ished, all the new papooses had a pleasant time at the Comanche bonfire and snake dance which this year replaced the sophomore initiation. The sponsors for the sophomore class were Mr. Joe Konya and Miss lona Masten. l l Judy Brown, Mike Sweigert, Pat Demetrulias. T QA' Tenth grade is challenged To the problems of the yearbook staff in pub- lishing this annual we must add this page. Our specific problem is lack of material to fill the space. The staff has exhausted their storehouse of ideasg thc editor has long since torn out her hairg and the sponsors were so frustrated with lack of copy that page 35 threatened to be blank. How- ever, our engraver volunteered to blow-up the sophomore Indian nearly to life-size, and our printer stated that he might use large letters in the type. This helps to alleviate our problem, but we are wondering if in future years our printer and engraver will be so cooperative. What we really are trying to say is if future sophomore classes would like an opening page to introduce their class, the yearbook staff would appreciate their having more colorful activities about which we can produce more joumalistic talent than is displayed in these paragraphs.
