Classes of 1887 and 1888 1 fThe first two classes to graduate from C,H.S.j Seated Maggre Sherman Fred Munroe Standmg Mrnnte Wrllramson Reed Munroe Nettle Batson The board approved and acclarmed Professor Church1ll's regulatrons They moved to adopt the recommended rules and course of study for hrgh school and to send a copy of them to the state supenntend ent of schools Durrng the wrnter of 1904 1905 the annex burlt rn 1886 burned down and was reburlt the same year In 1917 a new school was erected on the old srte In 1911 the pnncrpal hrs one assrstant and the erghth grade teacher taught the hrgh school, When the school was accredrted l.l'l 1912 the pnncrpal had two asslstants In 1929 two electrve subyects were added and a thtrd assrstant was engaged A musrc department was rntroduced rn 1931 and rn 1936 a musrc rnstructor was hrred A commercral teacher was engaged rn 1934 In 1938 a Smrth Hughes agrrcultural course was added to the cumculum and a home economrcs course was planned Dunng the latter half of 1938 a gymnaslum lrbrary musrc room laboratory and several locker and cloak rooms were added on the north srde of the bu1ld1ng In that year too a school bus wluch averaged nrnety mlles a day owned by the LaVrgne Company WHS fll'Sf used C0 provxde transportauon for the students Another bus was put rnto use rn 1941 at the same trme that a workshop for the agncultural students was completed Dr1ver's educatron was added rn 1949 and a full physlcal educatron program rn 1950 Thls changed C,H S from a basrc to an mtegrated hrgh school accredrted by the state of Wrsconsm Graduates of Cadott are scholastrcally elrgrble to enter colleges and other rnstrtutes of hrgher leammg In 1953 243 students were enrolled rn the grades and two new teachers a physlcal educauon Instructor and an asststant coach and sclence teacher were added numberlng the faculty at ten high school teachers four elementary grade teachers and a vocatronal agncultural mstructor At that trme the hrgh school was a state supported pubhc school . . . . . . . In thrs three year hrgh school the average darly attendance was 14 for the frrst year Of these 11 were takrng up the common branches 12 were enrolled rn algebra or geometry 12 rn natural scrences and 14 rn the study of modern languages The prrncrpal who was the only teacher had to hear 12 recrtatrons a day He was also responsrble for the moral trarnrng and manners of hrs puprls and for the formatron of therr rrght habrts Prrncrpal Mrller recerved a salary of 5600 a year durrng the years he spent as head of the new school. On November 14 1889 Professor Churchrll then prrncrpal of the school appeared before a Jornt meetrng of the town board of Srgel and the board of educatron to present for consrderatron a lrst of plans and regulatrons for the school Those present at the trme were Messrs Dretnch and Watson of the town board and Messrs Munroe Goetz and Sherman of the school board Professor Churchrll had prepared a pamphlet rn whrch he stated school rules and regulatrons Clie belreved rn the old adage Spare the rod and sporl the chrld 3 The three years secondary course was strll rn effect The school year was set at 180 days wrth each student requrred to attend a mrnrmum oftwelve study took up marnly the study of grammar geography and arrthmetrc but also mcluded exercrses rn spellrng declamatron select readrng penmanshrp orthoepy and composrtron The second year concern ed marnly algebra U S hrstory and physrology whrle the thrrd year was grven to the study of geometry and physrcs Two terms of theory and the art of teachrng were also offered rn the thrrd year At thrs trme also a 100 volume lrbrary and lyceum features were added to the school Suggestrons for teachers were as follows Teachers should keep close watch over therr puprls not only rn school but durrng recess as well and should also rnstruct therr puprls morally as well as rrrtellectually and physrcally The teacher was to be what he would have hrs puprls become Professor Churchrll also mentroned the prevrous graduates of Cadott Hrgh School rn hrs pamphlet Of the 29 who had enrolled for the school s frrst term only two Fred Munroe and Maggre Sherman graduated rn 1887 In 1888 Edwrn Hamar Alrce Munroe and Mrnnre Wrllramson were the sole graduates. with a board of education consisting of Dr, H. P. Landry, clerk, Alvin Woodford, treasurer, and Herman Knitter, president. Norman Panzenhagen was principal then, and today still patiently and adeptly directs life behind school doors. ..---4 Q? Principal Norm Panzenhagen Came to Cadott in 1948 In 1952 the compulsory subyects included English 9 10 and 11 c1v1cs 9 world history 10, U S history 11 and four years of physical education Elective subJects were English 12 general mathematics algebra geometry geography general science drivers education social problems visual aids band chorus home economics and agnculture 9 10 11 and 12 The students were also active in music forensics dramat ics student organizations and sports In 1950 Mr Willard Miller was appointed the first dean of boys and Mrs Gertrude Johnson was the first dean of girls. Their successors have been Mrs Eunice Brusen William De Jung Miss Dorothy Hebert Harold Lindeman Eugene King Mrs Emma Jane Luebstorf Mrs Barbara Gosh and Alvin Hawkinson In 1954 an elementary school btulding was constructed to provide more and better facilmes for both the high school and grade school factions A beginners' Latin class was added in 1955 and the following year two years of Latin were offered Latin has now become an established department in C H S In 1955 a noon hot lunch program was instituted Students from the elementary grades and high school together with the faculty and administration have been served a tasty nounslung meal each school day noon since that time ,L 4, 4 ,, ' ik, .
