Aerlal Vrew of Cadott rn the good old days In 1881 W S Munroe establrshed the frrst paper The Cadott Record In 1890 J A Barrager appropnated the paper and entrtled rt The Cadott Blade M P Stewart IH 1914 changed the name to The Cadott Sentrnel as we know rt today A steam saw mrll was begun tn 1883 by Dan Clark and W S Munroe There soon sprang up four hotels the Commercral House the Cadott House the Central House and Cadott s Anon Orchestra attempts to save the west bustnesses were rn vaxn, The vrllage was tncorporated rn 1895 At present the popula tron rs 791 The presrdent rs Mr A C B1ornstad and Robert Couey rs the clerk and treasurer the Unron Boardrng House whtch became qurte well known. Horsetradrng reached Us peak at the tum of the century wrth the Hardy brothers Brlly Clark and r.he Barney brothers as leadmg frgures In Apnl of 1914 came a heart breakrng blow to the vlllage when a small fue whrch started rn Wolter's Hardware Store wrped out half of Marn street destroyed nrne busrnesses caused serrous losses to fourteen people plus mmor damage to stores All An Early Cadott Scene

-'gil'-P l I I no 4 ' -r to 3 l fl ll ryan CADCTT HIGH SCHGOL 75 YEAR OF GROWTH In the frve years precedmg 1880 the cruzens of thrs small communrty gave serrous thought to the need for educauon beyond that of the elementary level About 1880 people rn thrs area from all walks of lrfe drscussed the pro s and con's of a secondary educauon Some held that the Three Rs were good enough for anyone Most of these opposmonrsts though had l1ttle or no educauon themselves and thus d1dn't deem rt necessary to contrnue school after the completxon of the grades Others who proved to be the maJonty contended that therr chrldren boys and grrls alrke should be grven equal ample opportunlty for a thorough educatron complete 1n every aspect. They belreved qurte rrghtly that rt would ard rn the pursurt of a better career On December 10 1881 chalrman Alex Sherman met wrth supervrsors C B Spaeth and Ed Roycraft and wrrh the town treasurer Henry Goetz and clerk Otto Freese to drscuss the secondary school rssue After a report on the rmmedrate funds whrch could be used for a school burldrng and talkrng over such mrscellaneous rtems as hquor lrcenses and the burldrng of three new brrdges across Yellow Rrver they decrded to present a petrtron for the establrshment of a free hrgh school rn Cadott at the annual town meetrng Aprrl 4 1882 to be voted on by ballot The next spnng the electors of the town of Srgel met and voted on the petmon The result of the ballot was 91 4 rn favor of a new school Because rt took trme and money to construct a burldrng plan a currrculum and obtarn equrpment rt was not untrl January 16 1884 that the doors of the hrgh school opened for the frrst trme, wrth Frank Mrller as rts fust pnncrpal. Prror to IIS openrng, December 20 21 to be exact, 35 young people took the entrance examrnatron, whrch rncluded the vauous branches of spellrng, arrthmeuc, readrng, wrrnng, gram mar, and geography. It was a wonderful Chrrstmas present for the 29 who passed the tests. The equlpment of the new school rncluded patent seats, new blackboards, a map, a globe, and a Webster's Drctronary--quxte satrsfactory equrpment at the trme. 1 Ax ,,- .
