The Zidac Staff 3 Foreword Whatever the task or pleasure how large or small it may be it is the spirit it is done with that will mark its success of failure We the Senior Class will leave you many things but the most important of these will be of no material value it will be our spirit We hope that we have set examples that will be followed in the years to come We have always spoke and stood for what we believed in We stood as a class , not divided, but united. To the future seniors, for years to come , we wish you the pleasant and numerous days which we have spent at Cadiz High. We leave you with mixed emotions: but may a part of us , our spirit, remain with you always . THE EDITOR -Q-ga. The result will be confusing and inadequate. I've received lots of advice, on athletics , as a participant and as a coach: on education, as a student and as a teacher: on health from my doctor: on finance from interested well-wishers: on autos , 'IV's, diets, manners, boats, casting rods, shampoos , political candidates and other topics beyond my count and often beyond my comprehension. With a moment's serious reflection, however, I can eliminate most of such contributions for my benefit, well intentioned and wise though they may be. In final analysis , for the greatest good, I would recall two brief admonitions by Iesus. The first in Matthew VII: 33, Seek ye first the kingdom of God , and his righteousness: and all these things shall be added unto you. The second in Iohn V 24 He that heareth my word and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life and shall not come into condemnation: but is passed from death unto life. My prayers are that each pupil in our Cadiz Public Schools may so live that he may make an effective contribution to his home, community, state and nation: that he may learn to love the Lord God, with all his heart, soul, mind and strength: and his neighbor as himself. 4' Prl ncl pal Mr. Vincent Cooper As each school year passes , each one more quickly than the last, it is our hope that your goal has been realized in wiser and broaded aims in life Earnest application to school studies will pre pare you to earn a living or to go on to further educa tion. We all experience some triumphs and defeats but even these experiences enhance our memories of school days ---the triumphs, happy events to recall---the defeats , valuable lessons which teach us to try again. FC O0 O I aff, T C B 4-wi' A AP LT LA I N s IIM WALLACE I MELVIN MASON Cadiz started its season with only two regulars from the 1957 team that won 7 lost 2 and tied one Back from that team were Jim Wallace and Floyd White There were several other boys that lettered but played only sparingly throughout the season These boys were Melvin Mason Bob Brokaw Keith Henderson and Bob Francis who Joined the squad after the 4th game due to an auto accident Before the season started chances for winning more than four or five games looked very gloomy The boys worked hard and with the good attitude that prevailed among the boys the picture began to clear up a bit Our first game was at home with a fine Dennison team that lead us 6 to O going into the final period D Gross scored a touchdown and B111 Lee scored the extra point to win 8 to 6 The second game was a b1t easier as Cadiz prevailed 18 to 0 with one touchdown being called back In this game Melvin Mason scored in the first minute on a punt return of 60 yards to put Cadiz in the lead to stay The 3rd game of the season was with undefeated Tiltonsville at Cadiz We had a couple of scoring opportunities but did not capitalize on them and lost the game 6 to 0 to a fine team We journeyed to Barnsville the following week and defeated them 14 to 6 In the early moments of the game M Mason threw a pass to F White and later C Mason scored the other One touch- down was called back due to clipping Our next opponent was Wellsville, one of the teams that beat Cadiz in 1957 After Cadiz grabbed a quick 18 to 0 lead 3rd period, Wellsville struck for 2 touchdowns in the 4th period, but we held on to win 18 to 14. Our next opponent was tough Dillonvale. The defense of our boys was outstanding. Four times in the first quarter Dillon was inside the 10 yard line and our team held the line or recovered a fum ble. C. Mason roared 44 yards on a single wing to score the only touchdown of the game. Cadiz won 6 to O. Then an undermanned Mt. Pleasant team came to Cadiz and with the Reserves playing most of the game, Cadiz won 34 to 6. Archrival Adena had a tremendous team and the youthfulness of our boys began to show to an all-senior Adena team. We were thoroughly beaten ....... 22 to 0. The coaches wondered if this was the downfall, for the next week we played St. Clairsville, a much larger school. The boys came back extremely well with a good spirit. Cadiz prevailed 24 to 6. This was a good team victory, for all the boys played a splendid game and the coaches were extremely proud of them. Cadiz Cardinals -A A , Q 37 ,v,, L f B ' . Iim Wallace and Floyd White, Co-captains led the way to a 61-34 victory. Mt. Pleasant was the home opener for the Cards -it was Cadiz by a score of 73-33. Traditional rival Adena was defeated in our second home game 75-47. The Cards next journeyed to Mt. Pleasant and ran into a ball-control game, winning by 57-36. In its final pre-vacation game, Cadiz ran into a determined Dillonvale team at the Dillon Gym and fell short - losing 66-61 in an overtime battle. Wintersville , a newcomer to the schedule, was the next opponent to go down to defeat as the Cards struck a hot streak, 102-54. Jefferson-Union presented a rangy five, but the Cadiz artillery was too heavy. Ieff-Union was on the short and 104-45. The return match with Wintersville resulted in almost the identical score of the first meeting. It was Cadiz by 98-54. Barnesville came to Cadiz on a sub-zero night but action still waxed hot. After a gallant comeback by Barnesville's fine rangy team, the Cards prevailed 84-63. This marked the completion of nine games , and the season's halfway mark. Our record stood at 8 wins and 1 loss. Bellaire, boasting a very fine team, was encountered next at the Martins Ferry High Gym. It was a close game throughout and the Cards proved they wouldn't quit by defeating Bellaire for a prized victory 59-53. Arch-rival St. Clairsville was met and conquered 78-65 as Wallace and Iimison led the way. Ah-revenge! In their highest scoring effort of the season, Cadiz defeated Adena 134-72 , with the regulars playing less than three quarters. League rival Barnesville fought hard but the Cards played a steady game to win 82-71. The long -awaited chance to avenge their only loss to Dillonvale finally came , and the Cards were at their best. Score: 103-78. Hopedale and Dennison didn't have the firepower and were both on the short end - 117-52 and 107-77. Shadyside then visited Cadiz bringing an ever-dangerous team which was always in the ball game. Cadiz hustle paid off, however, with the Cards winning 101-83. Bridgeport Ctop-seeded team in the Martins Ferry sectional tournament this coming weekl next visited Cadiz. The Cards hustled out to a commanding 37-20 half-time lead. After the intermission, Bridgeport resorted to excessive fouling and stalling tactics , but Cadiz went on to win decisively 78-57. This win clos ed the regular season schedule and Cadiz showed its best one-season record ever-17 Wins and l defeat.
