' The history of the Class of 1951 began in September l939 when Miss Pickering greeted 32 pupils who came to school for their first day. Of those 52, thirteen C131 are about to complete twelve Kl2J years at Cadiz. Those thirteen are: George Arnie, Martha Ellen Blake, Grace Marie Fleming, Robert Harden, Charles Hazelrigg, John Hanna, Lee Liming, Marilyn Mattern, Martha Ann McFarlan, David Mizer, Nancy Rowland, Russell Tilkey, and Donald O'Bradovich. By the time we reached second grade we could find our way about the building. This year the class was joined by L. Ed Jones, Fred Emert, and Jack Giacobbi. In third grade we had our own store. We brought empty boxes from home and even made some fruit from clay.. This showed our artistic ability. Marilyn Coulson joined the happy gang this year. During third and fourth grade we had our Citizenship Club on Friday afternoons. My, how we looked forward to those meetings. Donald Barnhart and Charles Carter be- came members of our class when we were in fourth grade and in the fifth grade we were joined by Mike Liles, James McConnell, and David Bernard. Sixth grade was exciting since we had two teachers, Mrs. Speicher and Miss Philpott. This year we met Arthur Barkhurst. Of course, in seventh and eighth grade we made more new friends. Charles Ash and Don Dodds met us in seventh grade and in eighth grade Lois Reed. These years were gay ones for now we could change classes just like the big kids. We also were allowed to attend the Uth and Uth grade dance. This was the outstanding social event of the season. The climax of our high school days came when we were freshman. Many new pupils joined our class making the enrollment 64. Those enrolling this year were: Marlene Terry, Mary Ann Fryer, and Joan Edgar from Red Hill, Robert George, Arthur Cline, and Don Bizic from Georgetown. Kendall Lewis came from Flushing and Dale Lewis joined us from New Athens. Dick Jones, Betty Banks, Louine West, and Viola West came over from Dunbar School. And then from.Pike Peak came Cornell Porter, Mary Jean Hennen and Ray Hildreth. Mt. Vernon sent us Lois Hines, Veda Johnson, and Vernon Ickes. Those coming on the bus from Unionvale were: Don Kelley, Evelyn McDevitt, and Marlene Tweedy. Don Evans joined us from Wheeling, and George Brown from Barrettes. Life went along right on schedule. We now became interested in sports, band and extracurricular activities. In our Sophomore year the girls joined Y-Teens and the boys uoined the Hi-Y. They were also active in sports. , . Our time was taken up in our Junior year by the Class Play HSeventeenth Summern and getting ready for the Junior-Senior Prom. We chose HGay 9O'sH as our theme and, under the sponsorship of Miss McCutcheon and Mr. Patterson we had.a very colorful prom. This year Jo Anne Spurrier added her name to our roll. 15 To complete the cycle we addeq to our roll James Erb, Charles Wells, and Dale Hill who left in the ninth grade but returned to graduate at Cadiz. The years have gone fast and now we have attained that wonderful name nSen1ors On May lo, 1951, we graduated from Cadiz High School. The theme of the story was based on the different problems facing a teen-age girl, her method of solving them, and her ideal plans for the future. The heroine finally proved, after many upsets, that it was better to be honest and fair than to be flattered by gifts. with the able assistance of Mrs. C. J. Patterson, the Juniors were very suc- cessful in their play. For their senior play the class presented the romantic drama, nMarcheta,n by Arthur Jearue, a three-act play. The entire action takes place within the walls of the patio of Pancho El Mbntez, the ancient homestead of an aristocratic family. Mar- cheta, the daughter of Montez and heroine of the story, is in love with Raymon Dono- van, a poor boy, but her father wishes her to marry Carlos Cortez, a wealthy suitor. After many difficulties and tragedies Marcheta dies, failing to realize her dream-- her marriage to Donovan. The moral of this story--happiness and wealth are often strangers. Mrs. Ile Vera Carnes, together with an eager cast, is to be complimented for the wonderful production of this play. Girls and Boys States These three were selected and sponsored by the American Legion and its Auxiliary as repre- sentatives to Girls' State and Boys' State. The Girls' State was held at Capital University, They spent a most enjoyable and educational week last summer for the purpose of not only gaining more knowledge of State, Local, and National Government, but also seeing and exper- iencing Government in action. John told me was quite nice and that he was personally sending violets to the Next year he plans to plant tulips in the White House lawn! to have lunch with him at Georgie's Place, which naturally I accepted very readily. While munching on two cold cucumbers, the owner came in, and do you know who he was? None other than George Arris. Imagine how surprised we were! George told us that his chief cook and bottle washer, plus his efficient man- ager was Mary Jean Hennen. Jeanie related'some news as to the whereabouts of Evelyn and Cornell. Can you guess what they are doing? Touring the world with Mrs. Carnes' Big Ballet Show. Remember how craay they used to be--about ballet, of course! After our lunch John and I departed so I could return to the Institution. While ambling along, I happened to see a sign which read, nLadles Apparel-styled by Charles Carter . You know Nank I always knew Chuch had aoility but . When I reached the Institution the lobby was quite crowded and there I bumped into Charles Ash and Don O'Bradovich. Chuch and Don are now news reporters. They always did know the inside details. They told me that Russell Tilkey was now head professor at the Chicago School for the Double Jointed. It seems his prize pupil, Lois Reed, is quite and'expert. Donny said that such. I heard from Ray that Bob Harden is he is looking for an old buddy, a MODKSYE heard that Ed Janes is quite sensational with his original jazz prize player is Dale Hill, who P68lly beats in Africa exploring and hunting. It seems or something like that. 20 I Ray said he had heard that Betty Banks, Viola and Louine West are really giving the Andrew Sisters competition. They expect to travel across the seas, soon. I heard Marlene Tweedy is an inspector in an airplane factory, she had worked all the way up from lst class riveter. When I got off the train, the taxi I called was being driven by Joan Edgar. Joan was so surprised her foot slipped and the gas pedal stuck. We were really traveling! After a patrolman followed us for about 6 miles she got the car under control. The patrolman didn't give us a ticket, though, because you know Art Cline wouldn't give classmates tickets. Can you imagine Art a patrolman? Art told us prosperous. Guess who runs the county pool parlor next door--Fred Emert. Dick Jones was voted Mr. Touchdown of l900. He is finally making touchdowns that count. Don Barnhart has given up chasing women, and is now Justice of the Peace in Reno. I guess he is kept quite busy by Marlene Terry who has already had 10 proposals and 5 husbands. After I'bought my T. W. A. ticket from Philadelphia, to the thriving city of Cadiz, I found my pilot to be Don Dodds. He was always flying high anyway. When I reached Cadiz, I ran into Lee Liming who is operating the daily express from Cadiz, New Athens, and Flushing. I heard he is doing fine. James Erb was the chief test pilot at the new Cadiz Atom Bicycle factory. He is now seen with two canes and a wheelchair. Lee told me that Veda Johnson is the new president of the Harrison County Farm- ette Society. She is really reaping the harvest. ' Mary Ann Fryer is now happily married and is ousy teaching her three little red heads how to feed the chickens. Lee also said that Kendall Lewis had followed the Wild goose into ALHSKS. After stumbling into a gold mlne he decided to stay and settle down. Say, Nank, what have you heard about Gracie Flemlng's marriage? The last I heard she had been running such competition with another photographer that HE decided they should have a partnership. I heard Marilyn Coulson had gotten married and was taking care of little George Jr. 21, I certainly wish Dale Lewis all the luck in the world with his counterspy job. His last case was exciting. Remember his catching the thief that ran away with Shake speare's Macbeth? And how surprised we were when it turned out to be Mr. Campbell? Well, Nank, take care of your art studio and also the counterspies. ll! Good luck, e' K KQQI W ' Q 'f b 1:55 1 F I 6 mmnmw Last Will 1' uuuumu mn: Us Uullmumuq llclllaallalslll Jltmuluml.
