Behind the color- ful screen of the quarter-gobbling machines such as “Pac-Man laid a complex maze of technical, electronic giz- mos. As a student playing Pac-Man, one had to ponder some questions of deep analogy. Is Pac-Man a symbol of American social authority when, once energized, chases we, the students of life — the posterity and future of the system, around with awesome power? Is the Pac-Man game analogous to life in that on the surface of its game, like the game of life — the game our teachers at Cache keep calling the “real world” — simplicity abounds, but underneath it all is a mess of things which when properly arranged makes it possible to simplify our future like the Pac-Man game, where we'll be judged as successful only if we accumulate a high total of socially-acceptable points? Perhaps what our parents, teachers, administrators, relatives, friends, and neighbors, leaders, and preachers have been telling us for years is true: life is, like Pac-Man, a game where we have the responsibility and controls in our own hands to make it or break it. As we reflect through these pages of the 1982-83 yearbook, it becomes evident how many educational lessons on life and responsibilities we learned at Cache both inside the classroom and outside its four walls. Indeed, 1982-83 was Pac'd with excitement, lessons, highpoints, and low mortients — all of which prepared us for our lives beyond the walls of Bulldog pride and character. 18 • Providing • • Highlights in 1982-83 Life and school at Cache are both finite. For some of us, 1982-83 introduced that magical senior year at our public school academic lives. To a few, it was an end to a dedica- tion they had endured to the best of their abilities at this time. To most, however, 1982-83 will be remembered fond- ly for all the joys and yes, even the trials we encountered throughout the year, not just for the pride in graduating af- front beaming relatives. Regardless of how we pupils perceived the school year shown in these pages, as dif- ferent as those thoughts were, we all had one thing in com- mon: when the pages of history will be authored for this mo- ment in time, our entire students population can note with an asterisk that “we were there.” As meaningless as some things may have seemed as they occurred, we must look back and realize that this past year was historically-Pac'd”. 19 W YEAS 'FAC'ACE iMFVM • • • • Once we all avoided boy germs or “girls germs ; shunned outward affection; called romantic movies corny” or mushy”. But for many in 1982-83, that special feeling — LOVE — shared with someone else who cared and you felt you could trust without bounds, was perhaps the one aspect of this school year that we’ll vividly remember and relate experiences from for the remainder of our lives. Ah, the dates were all so special, and all seemed to be a learning experience; the night we bought a meal we found we couldn’t afford; the many stops at the quick food shops; getting so full of pizza that we felt we’d bust, then laughing ourselves sick; getting dressed up to go eat at a fancy eating establishment; tranquil farm; our first fight; making up or breaking up; the special night we’ll remember as “our prom.” And as we walk into the sunlight of a world of new adventures, we can hold the hand of one with love who’ll say, I care — I’ll always be there.” A “love-Pac’d year to recollect down the ages when our hearts may slow or sputter, but will never lose the warmth they first felt in 1982-83. It’s inevitable to go through any school without feeling the brunt of an invisible weight caused by studying for three tests in one day; breaking up with a long-time special friend and then getting a low grade the same day; or working until 3:00 a.m. and then having a test at 9:05 that same morning. It seemed that no one really understood how much they ex- pected of us. Life seemed funny in these moments, when we could divorce ourselves from the hectic situations at hand, look back at them, and laugh at the world: we worked so hard to hold our chins up whn these respon- sibilities seemed to be an unconquerable burden that we failed to notice that we had ac- complished more than we, or anyone else, thought we could handle. It was comforting to know we shared tough times like others ... our friends, teachers, and parents ... in a busy, “pressure-Pac'd year. MEM«liES (III TIMES If they weren't our love, they were our friend. And as friend, we conjunctively shared the year in so many ways that some couldn’t see as fun, but we did: taking out in the parking lot until the tardy bell rang; getting in trouble together while playing pranks; trying to spice up the class parties; reading “The Challenger with a buddy and laughing at our own silliness; voicing our opinions in class meetings with the sole incentive of drawing a chuckle; chasing each other in the school buildings without get- ting nabbed by an irate teacher; sitting beside each other and talking, or sleeping, in an assembly; trading food in the cafeteria; and sharing moments of joy or shedding tears together. When we leave Cache, are we ready to embark on a career of new responsibilities? Marriage? College? Leaving home for the first time? As we graduate in 1983, can we really conceptualize a life where such dear friends may never be seen altogether again after we walk out of the gym following commencement exercises? With all these upcoming changes, it’s nice to have this annual... a momento of a “memory-Pac'd year. 21 For most at Cache in 1982-83, it was a “sports-Pac'd term. Some sweated; hobbled through injuries on crutches; panted like dogs after wind sprints; endured ice, snow, rains, and torturous winds; or cheered teammates on so wildly we lost our voices yelling for something we knew would not change the course of mankind, but which was important to we, the participants. For others, sports this year involved making bus trips as the Pep Club to enemy battlesites to cheer our top-ranked football team to another victory; making posters, signs, and spending endless hours before fans trying to evoke cheers without our due recognition; pouring our all into our theme song with a cold band instrument that sudden- ly seemed to be more of a foe than an ally; picking up friends, children, or depressed stu- dent athletes in numerous late-night treks to the school after practices and games; and, of course, other Bulldog boosters supported the sports with tears when we could not conquer all. Bulldog sports were not the most vital paprt of our schooling, but they helped us to grow and we're glad we can carry away from them learning experiences we gained while in our valiant pursuit of excellence. 22 This special year can be earmarked with so many notable sidelights: the economy took a Depression-like plunge; a new football league, the U.S.F.L., coaxed the Heisman-trophy win- ner Herschel Walker into forfeiting his college degree and senior year in college to become a professional athlete; “Ghandi” topped E.T.” for the honor Movie of the Year ; a survey suggested such proposals as an eleven-month school year be implemented; and George Nigh became the first Oklahoma governor to suc- ceed himself in office. But, in Cache, we students had to learn a lesson on life in the most cruel of means through the death of one we all knew. We wondered at how one so young could be snat- ched from us. But that educator was not silenced forever by the awesome slap of death. Actually, he taught us even in his death and whenever we reflect on his passing. He taught us as he lived to survive with strength against overwhelming odds. He taught us by his death to live on and honor his lesson to us by living to the fullest of the potentials that God has given us. He was a coach ... he was a teacher... he was a friend ... he IS. and always should be, an inspiration to excel until we, too, lie to rest. Inspirationally-Pac'd. exciting fun 23 Finally, graduation appeared and with it came the close of the schoolyear. No longer could we compare school and job. Now the time had come for us to leave, for us to go out and work in society with all we had learn- ed here at Cache. It is WE who must now carry on the American traditions. Like the Pac-Man game, our course had been run and we could only look at the score of our school-life events and reminisce at the growth we made in our encounters at each turn. But, unlike the arcade games, our life will come to an end on earth without “ex- tended play.” So as we close the yearbook and the memories hidden within its pages, we live on with thankfulness for all pertinent knowledge we accumulated at Cache during the 1982-83 year. With that knowledge, we S will make our short lives productively-Pac'd. V 24 iN MEMMIAM «FA 1 CiACIl, TEACHES A FBiEMI 1 HE LITIS . . . Especially where fun and excitement are concerned. They started off the year with an autumn water balloon fight and a watermelon eating contest. These festivities were topped with the election of club officers. A winter visit to a famous art exhibit was a learning experience for the club. On display were works by such famous names as Van Gogh, Pocassa, El Greco, Mon- drian, Minet, and Renoir. To raise money for Outstanding Artist Awards, the club did face paintings for Valentine’s Day. Seventy-six dollars was raised from this project. They closed out the year with a Saturday picnic to the mountains and another water balloon fiasco. The members would like to thank Mr. Schultz for organizing the club and for all his hard work. Some 40 athletes went out for football in the 1982-83 season. These athletes worked together to form one of the area’s toughest teams. The first two games of the season the Bulldogs held Walters and Hinton scoreless at 36-0 and 39-0 respective- ly. As the season wore on the games got a little tougher. Opponents were able to score on the Bulldogs but not _ able to overcome them. Needless to say the Dogs finished with a perfect season at 10-0. When play-off time rolled around, the Dogs were sit- ting pretty. The team was rated high and was very well publized. When you talk about high school football, the Cache Bulldogs name usually came up. Despite an early play-off loss to the Ringling Bluedevils, the Dogs were treated to a fine season. Cache is always pro- ud of their football teams and this year is no different. Ronnie Castlebury 119 John Carroll Cache was also recognized for its many outstanding players in football. Players mak- ing All-Area are as follows: Mike Figueroa, Offensive Tackle; Roy Collins, Guard; Ronnie Castlebury, Defensive End; Steve Morrow, Nose Guard; Lenson Hearn, Linebacker; Steve Pinchback, Center: Tim Zimmer, Run- ning Back. Seniors making All-District are listed as: Mark Fikes, Quarterback; Gregg Johnson, Guard; Steve Morrow, Nose Guard; Lenson Hearn, Linebacker; John Carroll, Tackle; Mike Figueroa, Offensive Tackle; Alfred Wright; Defensive End; Roy Collins, Guard; Ronnie Castlebury, Defensive End. Mike Figueroa, was also honored All-Regional and A I I - S t a t e Honorable Mention. We are really proud of each and every player on the team. Everyone plays an important part of the team. With new self-confidence and a fairly new game plan, the Bulldogs have given people reson to fill up the stands with an 11-11 record this year. After a slow start with two losses to Walters and Elgin, the Lady Bulldogs rolled off four straight wins in a row. Two of these wins led them into the finals of the Marlow Tournament against Apache. Perhaps the biggest rivalry the ladies faced was a team from down the road — the Indiahoma Warriors. When the Bulldogs and the Warriors first met up in the season, the Bulldogs faced a 45-42 loss. The teams were matched up again in the semi-finals of the County Tournament. The Bulldogs were defeated again with a score of 52-49. These losses didn’t make the girls give up. Their stamina and will to win were tested in their homecoming game against Marlow. It took six overtimesteam, they will be even more ready next year and are looking forward to a great season.
