Y' fire and rain Alumni Helped To Pursue Spirit You take the Friday night game, the crowning of a queen, and the grand finale - the dance. Add them up and what do you get? Homecoming. That magical time of the year when for once the girls can share the 'limelight' on Friday night. When you can get dressed up and not feel funny at a school dance. And where, once again, you can renew old friendships with Conquistadores of past years. Yes, we all agree that Homecoming in itself is a memorable time of the year. The Assembly held on Friday afternoon was a great success because of the large number of alumni in attendance. A group of '72 graduates featured a skit that had the spectators in uncontrollable laughter. Cheerleaders and Songleaders from former years did 'their thing' proving once again that the Cabrillo spirit lingers on even after graduation. Q ' K Q 5 .. 3, new' Q Cubrillo .lata U06 Homecoming is a tradition. So, too, is the winning of thevhomecoming football game by the Conquistadores. They smeared Arroyo Grande 24-14. During the game halftime the queen candidates were presented on the field and the great moment came . . . the name of the 1972-73 Homecoming Queen was announced. Mixed with tears and smiles Dale Goodwin was presented with a bouquet of roses befitting her title QUEEN. 'Fire and Rain' the song which was the theme for the 1973 Homecoming says in part, I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend. But such was not the scene. Dancing, laughter, and lots of talking spread throughout the uniquely decorated cafeteria as alumnus renewed friendships and remembered 'old timesf Once again Homecoming was here and soon over, to be anticipated next year. It was a delightful revision to the traditional story with songs and dance. But just the same, the message was communicated to all who attended. The age old character of Ebeniezer Scrooge was brought to life through song and dance, as he was brilliantly portrayed by Mark Brown. The lesson learned by all who watched Mark play Scrooge made a lot of people realize a lot more about Christmas. af Lfffmai H THE PLAYERS Narratorw., ,,....,,.A...A ..,.... , .. .... ,, ..,.. . ., ..,, ,, . .Kathy Lodle The Carolers , ,. .. . Placing at every parade aided the girls and Cabrillo by receiving self satisfaction, accomplishment and bringing recognition to their school. K 4 i marching Spir Since spirit seems to be the order of the day, one could not look at Cabrillo spirit and get a total picture without including the Marching Band. Under the direction of Glenn Newcomb, the Cabrillo Marching Band maintained an undisputed reputation for itself, and Cabrillo High School. Upon entering the band room you are trophies which were awarded for their efforts. They range from six-foot masterpieces to wax covered skulls. The Marching Band would be incomplete without the snappy style of the majorettes, headed by solo majorette Sally Schaefer. Taking part in assemblies, halftime shows and parades, they have shown invigorating enthusiasm to all. This was clearly displayed by their attention-grabbing routines and fresh new ideas for reviving spirit this year. Starting off on the good foot, the Cabrillo Heralds marched on to their second successful year. They added extra F attraction to the band wherever they traveled. Interest in world affairs was at its peak, as students became involved in current issues. At Cabrillo, 1972-73 evoked many memories. A successful football season concluded by a victory over Lompoc, a Northern League Championship water-polo team, a Homecoming dance depicted by 'Fire and Rain' and a jazz concert are some of the many factors which occured during an important period in our lives, High School. Theatrical Productions of 'A Christmas Carol,' 'Romeo and J uliet,' 'Fiddler On the Roof,' and 'Raisin In the Sun,' was another facet which will remain in the minds of many. Whatever this year brought, whether it be memories of success, failure, victory or defeat, it is wise to recall the past, as well as, look towards the future. s .... Senior girls stop from P.E. and strike a pose. 154 As the year ends another graduating class faces the endg the end of four unique years that can never be repeated. Starting out in our Freshman year, we experienced the thrill of being in with the upper grades. ' How different it was on that first day when we discovered all the freedoms high school had to offerg a big difference from the junior high. Being known as the class of 73 in class competitions really showed the student body We weren't to be picked on for long. How far away it sounded in 1969, the ear, 1973. Passing and surviving the impossiliile Freshman year, we became Sophomores. Who can ever forget the first time of being behind the wheel of a car or dissecting a frog? As Juniors we were finally classified as upperclassmen. Class rings showing this distinction was one of the highlights of the year. Another special privilege the Junior class earned was their attendance at the J unior-Senior Prom. Class officers were busy in planning the Sadie Hawkins Dance, the Prom and the upcoming big year. Early in September marked the beginning of the end for the seniors. A Halloween party, Fifties dance and Senior portraits were some of the main events of the first semester. The ending of first semester brought the parting of friends as some students aduated mid-term. Second semester was filled with anxiety as the big day approached. Fun-Elled activities as the Senior ditch day and the Junior-Senior Prom were part of our last days at Cabrillo. Endings are always sad, but think back to all the memories that were made. How can one forget American Government, the after game dances, the fire drills that for some reason lasted twent minutes, the Lompoc-Cabrillo rivalry, fill-in-the-bubble state achievement tests or a bottom ibcker on a rainly day? The object is not only to loo into the future, but also to look back into the past.
