MM Cabot Entertains Exchange Students From Across The Sea Elvira Ortega Martinez of Barcelona, Spain, tsittingj and Ul- rike Christine Luzius of West Germany Qstandingj spent the 1978-79 school year as guests of the Cabot High School. Cabot High School was honored to have been host to two very special students, Ulrike Christine Luzius of West Germany and Elvire Ortega Martinez of Spain. The two young ladies were part of the Youth for Understanding exchange program and spent the 1978-79 school year as students at Cabot High School. Elvira and Christine were chosen for this program on the basis of their scores on an English language test and the results of an interview. The girls were also required to possess a moderately high grade average in their own schools. The girls arrived in Cabot in August and stayed with host families until July when they returned home. Elvira, who lives in Barcelona, Spain is the daughter of Sr. Silvestre Ortega and Sra. Lusia Martinez. Her father is foreman in charge of maintenance at a Barcelona chemical plant, her mother is a housewife. She liked American sports, especially football. She enjoyed cheerleaders and pep assemblies, and had a sweet tooth especially for candy, cakes, and pies. Tennis and movies were other special interests of Elvira. The thing Elvira found most unusual about the U.S. was the early age at which Americans are allowed to drive. In Spain the minimum age for driving was 18. Elvira was the house guest of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Park during her year's stay in Cabot. Christine, of West Germany, is the daughter of Paul and Herma Luzius. Her father worked for the telephone detachment of the Spanish Postal System. Swimming and badminton were special interests of Christineg however, like Elvira, she liked American football, cheerleaders and pep assemblies. The pyramid formation of CHS cheerleaders especially impressed her. Christine liked American pop songs and listed The Village People, E.L.O. and Genesis as her favorite groups. The experiences Christine remembered most were riding on a rice combine machine, seeing cotton for the first time, and watching a coon being skinned. Steak and hamburgers were her favorite American foods. The Grady Woodward family were hosts to Christine during her year in Cabot. Both girls made many friends while they studied at CHS. Best of luck was wished Elvira and Christine in their futures.
