Eigmwllifl i2lll8l'l8'lllPl?i3Q Ili E 3Q 'K 4-A an A The 1978 Cross-country season began on a note ofuncertainty. Even though Coach Rick Johnson was returning to Cabot, none ofthe present runners had trained under him before. The early part of the season was a period of learning and adjustment to a new and different program. The Panthers began to show signs of promise early. Several good time trials pointed to the first big meet: a tri-state affair put on by Harding College in Searcy. Cabot finished ahead of all other Arkansas schools and some out-of-staters, falling behind only power- houses Harding Academy of Memphis and Grissom of Huntsville, Alabama. Cabot's B-team won the small division. This proved to be only the beginning as the Panthers were on to trounce all competition in the next three meets at Cabot, Russellville and Little Rock. During these early meets, outstanding performances were turned in by Seniors: Wayne Cooper, Ronnie Swayne, Bob Massey, and Roy Brattong Juniors: Keith Brown, George Hamby, and Homer Whiteg Sophomores: Mike Lovettg Freshman: Richie Cooper. The state meet I ,J :Qian -5,3 and Arkansas' finest competition loomed large on Oct. 28. The Panther runners lived up to all expectations by literally running away with the meet. nw, In--- Wayne Cooper finished 5th, culminated a great season by leading his team- Lmammm I YWQHN. , mates to an unbeatable low score of 54 points. The outcome of the race and 325 l' 3 ex that AAA State Championship trophy left little doubt that the Panther cross country team was the class of the state in 1978. l GO PANTHERS. . .
