i THE STORM On our second day in port raging seas and high winds made the jetty a dangerous walkway. At noon the swells were breaking over the seawall and gusts of forty knots snapped our mooring lines. One CABOT jeep while pushing a stalled Renault fthe property of a petite mademoiselle who sold per- fume? became stalled itself and both cars were washed over the side. The jeep driver found sanctuary on a destroyer' the young lady remained overnight on the CABOT. By late afternoon the ship was riding to both anchors and using two engines to maintain position. A sailor stranded on the seaward end of the pier was plucked off by an LCI, The destroyers had gotten underway to ride out the storm at sea. All night long we set a seawatch and used a French tug to keep the ship from swinging into the pier. By morning the storm had abated leaving us with a bent screw and a smashed accommodation ladder. We remained in Oran until the 26th. Some men took the tour to Sidi-bel-Abbes home ofthe French Foreign Legion. The rest were content to wander in downtown Oran ming- ling with the crowds and seeking amusement in its old world atmosphere
