GUAM Guam is the southernmost, largest, and most populated island of the Marianas. It is 26 miles long at its extreme length and 4 to 8 miles wide. Guam is a territory of the I nited States, and exercises loeal self-government under the United States Department of Interior. A large part of the island is ringed by reefs. Near the middle of the island the soil is dry and fertile. The principal products are corn, rice, and sugar. Guam is also an i)nportant Naval Base for ships bound for the Far East, and for defense in the South Pacific. The population of Gua)n is 66,000, of whom 31 ,000 are native Guamanians. The remaining population consists mainly of Ameri- can militarx personnel. 0
