We will never forget you observing us as freshmen giving our first baths, measuring TPR's and even listening with a double stethoscope while we mea- sured blood pressures. You are one that we will never forget and will always admire. We know you realize that things aren't the way they used to be. You took your rightful stand for your students and always worked toward a change for the better. Never did a CSU or a Student Personnel meeting go by that you weren't there. We will remember your patience, guidance, and motherly advice when we began to care for a new type of patient-the child; also, the raveoli, spa- ghetti, and hamburger feasts at your home at the end of our Pediatric experience. There is also your fine examples, sincere interest in each of us and your generous, friendly smile that has encouraged us through three years of our nursing education. We, the Senior class of 1975, with our sincerest respect, dedicate this 1975 edition of the Cap and Pin to . . . Mrs. Sue Barringer. She is one who gives that extra friendly smile that lets us know that we are more than students all the time. She kept us walking the straight line as head of the Judiciary Council. We will never forget the nursery experience we shared with her-stimulating and suctioning the new-born, calling the time of birth, bathing, feeding, and weighing babies each day, and her example of mother- ing she taught us. Our class appreciates the time and effort she spent with us as class advisor for two years. Without her, this annual would not be a success, as she has been an annual staff advisor. For all of her understanding, kindness, and effort, the Senior class of 1975 extends its warmest appreciation to Mrs. Janelle Correll. GRADUATION 1974 The 1974 graduation would not have been complete without the presence of mascots, Kathy Hood and Partick Argo. Honored guest speaker for the evening was Dr. Ben Flowe. It was a refreshing change to see Dr. Flowe a little nervous due to the students, rather than the stu- dents a little nervous due to Dr. Flowe. Having reached the top, they look back at their long climb filled with memories of hardship, joy, tears, and laughter. Sharing their last moments as a class, each looks towards what nursing holds for her in the future. Marshals, Wanda Smith, Sheila Coble, Sandi Hill, Carolyn Cruthers, Kay Mann, Jennifer Hildebran, Karen Shoaf, Theresa Essick, Kay Love, and Phyllis Webb were chosen from the Junior Class in accordance with their scholastic achievements. N. our fe:; HISTORY A dream for a school of nursing began in 1941. The nursing situation became very critical due to so many nurses going into the military service. Therefore, the Board of Trustees and Administrator voted to open a school of nursing. In the solaria of the nurses' residence student rooms and classrooms were set up, brochures and catalogues were prepared and the first instructor of nurses, Miss Dorothy Adams, a graduate of Duke University was employed. A great deal of the teaching was done by the members of the medical staff. The School of Nursing opened officially in February 1942 with state approval and an enrollment of 17 students. In the spring of 1945 ten stu- dents graduated. One of these students made the highest average on the state board examinations in the State for that year. Today the program's emphasis is different than it was in 1942. Previously the students were responsible for the nursing service and what was taught to them in the classroom. Today the program emphasizes theory and then service. The reason for the change is that without proper knowledge nursing care could not be completed. The school of x-ray was opened in 1943. There have been 110 students to graduate. The school of x-ray is nationally accredited by the American Society of x-ray Technicians. A new two-story building was constructed in 1945 which enabled the capacity of students to be approximately 100. This new building consisted of classrooms, science laboratory, dietetics laboratory, library, recreation room and dormitory space for both students and the faculty. In 1954 a third story and a new wing was added. This provided an auditorium, lounges, kitchenette, laundry, a larger library and additional dormitory space. The School of nursing has graduated 728 students to this date. The school has been approved and maintained this ap- proval from the state Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education since it was first opened. The school re- ceived its temporary accreditation in 1962. This made the school one of four diploma schools to be accredited in North Carolina. A school of laboratory technology was begun in 1954. This school has graduated 24 students. This course consists of a twelve month program. Upon graduation the students receive a certificate from Cabarrus Memorial Hospital School of Exfoliative Cytology and they are eligible for National certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Perhaps it is difficult for one to believe two nursing students, one emerging from a program extending through 33 months of study and the other from a program extending through 24 months of study, could be expected to per- form nursing and nursing skills in a comparable manner immediately following their graduation. For the Faculty at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, having dealt persistently for two and one-half years with the question of how can this be? , it is not now difficult to perceive or expect. Many interested persons have asked What is the difference in these two programs? It could be a simple task to list those things which can be identified as differences between the two year and the 33 months programs, but such a list without some basic description of activities and involvement of people might perchance leave the reader with somewhat less information than is needed for understanding these differences. While there are several dif- ferences in the two programs, the major differences consist of: 1) Length of time, 2) Organization of Curricular offerings, 3) Learning resources, 4) A Learning Recource Center, and 5) Guidance Program. The Faculty did not attempt development of a program, the product of which would be different from the pro- duct of the 33 months program. Having graduated several classes who were quite successful in completing State Board Examinations, the Faculty would want nothing less for the graduates to come, so set out to design a new program which would produce a good nurse, comparable in achievement and the practice of nursing to those pre- viously graduated from the school. It is too soon yet to produce information that will tell us whether or not the design of our 24 months program will support successful attainment of our goal, but we look forward to the time when records will be available for such an evaluation. We love doing something new and different. At least stasis is not our forte. Unless we move forward, however, backward movement is inevitable. 62 , jit is the last edition of the Cap and Pin1 qcessful three''years for the Seniors.
