Approximately three hundred students from throughout the state were present. This has been recorded as the largest attendance ever at one of these workshops. The key speaker was Dr. Eloise R. Lewis, Dean of the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. After registration and the first program session, the delegates split up into six buzz groups, each conducted by a student leader and a resource person. Our hospital cafeteria prepared a luncheon cookout on the lawn at noon. In the afternoon, the final program session was held in our overflowing auditorium. Miss Carolyn Williams, past president of S.N.A.N.C., was the speaker. We at Cabarrus were honored and delighted to serve as hostesses for the state workshop. It was an excellent opportunity to learn about the ever-progressing trends in nursing education and patient care. 39 Preparations are made for the Fall Festival Dance. The dance was the highlight of the evening. Dr. Detty’s auctioning helped to make the Fall Festival a success. 40 JUDICIARY COUNCIL LINDA MOORE 41 MARY LOU MORRIS JEFFREY TARLTON CHRISTIAN STUDENT UNION C.S.U. After thirty-three months of hard work, study and fun we now find ourselves in the gateway with the rest of our lives dawning before us. What an eager, shy, frightened group of girls we were that September, 1964, clustering around the registration tables, filling out forms and sneaking glances out of the corners of our eyes at what would be our classmates for the next three years. The first few days of our life at Cabarrus were strange and frightening but we soon found ourselves a part of the busy hospital routine and the hustle and bustle of nursing school life. Our year as a class began with the first class meeting and the election of Brenda White, Bonnie Benton and Ann McLean as our class officers and Mrs. Waltarine Kiser as our advisor. Some of the highlights of our freshman year were: The Buffalo Ranch Picnic, dressing up ’’Skinny” (remember Mr. B’s face), the sign-in book in the cafeteria, ’’Davidson gentlemen”, the insurance mens1 banquet at Lake Lynn Lodge, trips to Mrs. A!s office, our first bed baths—(’’We'll do it and have fun”),’’The Stag in Doe”, What! Another room- mate!, Who is leaving now?, Your cap is blue! ’’Why are you under that bed?”, ’’But Mrs. Roach, I didn’t do it.” Do you remember ’’Bimbo” and other skits for Student Govern- ment? Then came the day we received our letters from Mrs. Ashley containing blue stripes! Hurray! Juniors at last! Under the capable guidance of Mrs. Kiser and Mrs. Mills as class advisors, we enjoyed a fine and successful year preparing for our future leadership at Cabarrus. Working with diligence and en- thusiasm our class officers Pam Perry, Elaine Rabon, Jo Bulls and Bonnie Benton lead us through many busy days with completeness and dispatch. Planning was begun early in our Junior year for a ’’nonflammable” Junior Senior. The theme,’’The Sound of Music” was carried out with great success. Our days were filled with Medical- surgical, obstetric and pediatric nursing courses. Bibs, bibs and more bibs filled our nights, but we did find time for dating, en- gagements, showers, and weddings! Winter days were spent sledding on the Country Club greens in cafeteria trays! Oops—sorry Mr. T. Our Valentine’s Dance was unbelievable. Remember ’’Ralph” our inebriated Wingate friend who rejected every record played? e The summer was filled with beach trips, ’’The Righteous Brothers”, Martins, letters from Vietnam; ye ole swimming hole and sunporch and ’’Who forgot to get the baby pictures?” Our last summer at C.M.H.! Our Senior year found half of our class winging our way out to Lexington, Kentucky for our psychiatric affiliation. We loved it 85 in September and the other half hated it in December. Our days in Kentucky were filled with study made interesting by excellent clinical instructors, working on the wards with the patients; puzzles, square dancing, parties and putting into practice our psychiatric tech- nique. Dinner hour stretched into hours. Kentuckians are marvelous and homesickness passed quickly. Would you believe : walks up town, The Hallmark House, knitting baby clothes, U.K., pool tables, Dave Wethington’s Band, Boonesboro Beach, the Parkette, trips to Cincinnati, the roar of Corvair engines, the theft of a dog, John Gale; 6 4 , Bill, Butch, Ronnie, Jamie, Russell, Donnie, Ed, John, Aldo, Mike, and Richard, just to name a few! Honda riding, anyone? Many friendships, some perhaps to last a lifetime were made. How about it, Sondra, Brenda and Sheila? Fire Drills at 3 A.M. in the snow, anyone? I must give credit to Mrs. Clary who helped to organize our time. Miss Lynn, also was always available to give help and understand- ing to all. Isn’t that right, Sheila and Brenda? The old pounding block came in handy! Once back at C.M.H., we quickly adjusted back into the old routine. Med-Surg IV in- troduced many new ideas to our nursing knowl- edge. Visits to Timrick and the Country Home- aided in our understanding of the geriatric patient. Some familiar phrases were: Shut that book! No reading in my lectures! , Hair off that collar!, Only diamonds and wedding bands allowed with your uniform! Night and evening duty were incorporated into Medical-Surgical IV — Will we ever get to sleep? Freedom of speech with Mr. Nelson in Sociology class. We would like to thank the Class of f68 for our Junior-Senior. Prac- tice began in May for graduation and then dawned June 1, 1967, our Commencement day! This history has been written in the lighter vein but you must remember, All work and no play makes Jane a dull nurse! Work we did, but ITm sure we will never forget our academic activities. Now, we the Seniors of Cabarrus Memorial Hospital bid you, adieu. Take care of our Alma Mater for us. Mrs. Mills, our senior advisor, a special note to you: We feel that you are a leader with vision who has helped us to translate thought and knowledge into action. You have labored tire- lessly and enthusiastically to help us realize our objectives. Your wisdom, wit and easy manner has been accompanied by tunderstand- ing, good counsel and drive for perfection. There is not a student in our class who has not benefited from your deep interest. For these reasons and many more, you command the respect of each and every student and are indeed a credit to Cabarrus Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. Kennedy, Jewel 21 Jackson Terrace Concord, N. C. 89 All endings are a paradox, for, they both stop and begin. This finis marks the end of another CAP AND PIN and the end of another year, but it also points to the future. With the ending of this year, the next year begins. Before turning to the next year, I, as editor of this 1967 CAP AND PIN, would like to say ’’Thank you” to those on the yearbook staff. The CAP AND PIN could not have been published without the hard work of the staff. Finally, I would like to say a special ’’Thank you” to Miss Carrie Young who has guided this year's CAP AND PIN from a dream to reality and Miss Sandra Sell for her hard work while I was on psychiatric affiliation. ’’Have you finished your section?”—”No uniforms yet, No freshman pictures, No annual this spring!”— ’’Quiet! — Here comes Miss Young!” — these are the familiar snatches overheard in the staff meetings as the hard working staff tries to produce a history book which will become the best annual ever. If we did produce your dream annual, we can forget the lost hours of sleep and the headaches suffered while wondering where extra time and ideas were coming from. Each staff member hopes that the students are pleased with the 1967 CAP AND PIN and will be proud when we say, ’’Extend your hands for the 1967 CAP AND PIN.” The 1967 CAP AND PIN Staff Sondra Simpson, Editor Sharon Harris, Business Manager ''.-■I' l-lia MH «H 4M SH MESH 3SS . • ill ? ii - ■ '■ .
