DEDICATION This American woman, a noble nurse, was born in the city of Hickory, North Carolina on December 5, 1885. At a young age Miss Moore left her home and friends to take nurse's training at Nebraska State Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. She soon began administering to the needs of the public in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. For nine months there, she strived to help those in need through public health nursing. Caring for individuals as a private duty nurse was a big re- sponsibility which Miss Moore under took during the years 1909-1917. Her love for nu r s i n g, however, extended further than this, for the public was her primary concern. No matter how long and how hard a day's work had been, she always found time to go beyond the call of duty. Two years were spent as Cannon Mills Industrial Nurse from 1917 to 1919. Then, she returned to public health nursing in Redding, California as a Shasta County Red Cross Nurse. In 1922-1927 Miss Moore's experi- ence continued to be of extreme use- fulness during the time she was em- ployed with the Tumboldt County Public Health Department in Areata, California. On her return to our community, testing children for tuberculosis during the months of summer vacation was one of Miss Moore's greatest sacrifices during her nurs- ing career. The Tuberculosis Clinic, held in Sunderland Hall, which be- longed to the Mission Board of the Northern Presbyterian Church, was established in order to take care of children who could not be sent to the State Sanitorium at Aberdeen for study. This was a joint project of the Cabarrus County Tuberculosis Association and the Cabarrus County Chapter of the American Red Cross. Much of Miss Moore's time during approximately five years was spent helping to provide proper care andfoodfor these children. She spent weeks teaching them health habits in order that their bodies would per- haps resist the infection. From her first little office and the work that was accomplished at Sunderland Hall, to the car she drove from house to house, Miss Moore did her part in helping to raise the pro- fession of nursing to the high place it holds today. This year 1960finds Miss Moore still active in her profession, serving as Student Health Director at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital, Concord, North Carolina. For more than 14 years, she has been the stu- dent's Florence Nightingale. 5
