Editor: Margaret Thomas Business Manager: Bette Anderson Lowery otiecowict In publishing the 1950-1953 Cap and Pin we, the staff, try to put into the hands of every student a pictorial view of three years of activity at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital. In doing so, the Cap and Pin staff strives to produce the finest annual possible, so that it will serve as a last- ing memory of those pictured in it and the school from which it originates. We consider this to be the purpose of the Cap and Pin; and if we have accomplished it with approval, we are more than grati- fied. THE STAFF 7tie pC vie tee 'JtcyAtttty fe 'PCedye I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. 1 will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mis- chievous and will not take or know- ingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my pro- fession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keep- ing and all family-affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician in his work, and devote my- self to the welfare of those committed to my care. % Wm ' -i ■ fc i mss - .. ...« ;.y.v.'.-vW,w. •.vX-.sv - . 4 I . wmwmWm WM , ' ?■ I “Dedication To an unselfish man who stands ever ready to aid those who call upon him, to a man who understands the students, to a man who has done much to further the Pediatric Department of Cabarrus Memorial Hospital, to a man with a friendly smile and ready hand-clasp, to Matthew Hill Grimmett, M.D. we proudly dedicate this 1953 MCap and Pin . 5 DetUc t M, To a man who is a leader in the field of Pathology whose time has been spent unselfishly in raising the standards of this hospital until it has become one of the best in the state. We see the goals we have accomplished and sigh with heartache and regrets, knowing that we have climbed this far together, but higher goals are to be attained for many of us alone. Before we gaze into the future, we recall the past days and remember::: September 5, 1950 when Mrs. Roach greeted us as 23 green preclinical stu- dents and introduced the rules and regulations we were to adhere to if we wanted to successfully reach the top::: The rules we obeyed and the rules we secretly broke::: Miss Ruth Parker, who as class sponsor, showed us the basic steps::: Class officers -- President, Margaret Thomas -- Vice-President, Carol Wil- liams -- Secretary, Maxine Herman -- Treasurer, Ruth Brooks; who served us faithfully our first year::: The happy events such as Student Parties, Valen- tine Dance and Glee Club events, which helped us adjust to our new life and cope with hard studies::: March 2, 1951, when we felt that our climb had really begun, when we proudly accepted a Cabarrus Memorial Hospital cap to wear forever::: Then Summer Vacations! ! ! I, Margaret Thomas Lowe, leave my hair rolling ability to Betsy Myers, in hopes she has as good a business as I have had. Written, witnessed, signed, sealed, and delivered this 15th day of April, anno domini, one thousand nine hun- dred and fifty three. Witnesses: Emily Russell, Testator President, Jearldean Pethel President of Student Body, Nova Beatty 32 Well, we all reached the top of the mountain twenty long years ago. It is the year of 1973, and a nice little crowd has gathered to find out what has happened to everyone during the years since we parted ways. In looking over the crowd I see little change in anyone. Ah, maybe there are a few gray hairs and a few extra pounds, but nothing drastic has happened. I see Bette Jo over on the other side, and they tell me she is giving planned parenthood lectures all over the state, while Johnny is at home coaching the Wingate Bulldogs who are in line to win the World Series this year. Oh, yes, by a strange coincidence their surnames are all Lowery. Sissy Pethel is over there talking to Maxine Herman who is modeling for the leading magazines of the country. She got the job soon after graduation. Someone had seen her picture in the Tribune. Sissy, I am told, finally found a man who swept her off of her feet. She is living in Alaska and practicing Pediatric Nursing among the Eskimos. She finally realized the dream of her life when she built her igloo penthouse and bought a Cadillac Dogsled. Dot Wood is doing Public Health Nursing in the Blue Ridge Mountains. She told me she bought a white horse to pull her and the little Wagoners while she makes her daily rounds. Nova Beatty is head of the Army Nurse Corps in Siberia. It is rumored that she takes a vacation once a year in Hawaii with the Vice-President of the United States, Walt Parker. It is all business of course, for they spend the time discussing the vital situation created from the current shortage of fire escapes in the Nursing Schools of the United States. Ruby (Bates) and R. L. are doing right well for themselves. She tells me that their dairy farm out sold Coble Dairy in Lexington last year. She has six of the finest children. Emily Russell is still clutching a Spanish Book in one hand and Luis in the other trying to get a passport South of the Border. While waiting for the red tape to be straightened out, Luis and the other Uribes (seven in number) have started a band which is leading the Hit Parade specializing in Tangos. Betty Query Sides is still drawing graphs. She is now working for the Vital Statistics Bureau of North Carolina. She and Bob have built a lovely home in Concord and Bob spends most of his time rocking the babies to sleep. Peggy Cole McCachern is giving religious Guidance lectures in Nursing Schools throughout the State while Blair stays home tending to his farm and tries to keep the tractor running. Margaret Thomas Lowe is teaching at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital now and Spencer is still printing invitations for Cabarrus Memorial Hospital free of charge. Nancy Carriker Blackwelder just returned from Germany where she and Rudolph have been living for the past years. Nancy accepted a post as interpreter between the German doctors and the patients at State Hospital in Raleigh. Me, you ask what I'm doing? Why I thought everyone knew that I was giving lectures on the advantages of Rules and Regulations at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital. I also give lectures on how to get the will power to stay on a diet. The last year I stayed in Raleigh trying to pass a bill which would give students a year at State Hospital instead of the customary three months (this would allow them more time to get a husband). If by a strange twist of politics the bill doesn't pass I shall have State College moved to Concord. It certainly has been a job getting all of this written for the Concord Tribune and the Daily Independant and I am rather worn out by all the gossiping and comparing of children that has gone on today so I must get some rest.
